Sometimes coincidences just crack me up. My father (now long gone) grew up feeding his and other families because of his hunting prowess during the Depression years. He was the kind of shooter that would wait till game birds "lined up" before letting loose with his 12 Gauge so as to get multiple birds with each shot as to "Not to waste ammunition" LOL. What did he choose as his favorite rifle? Same rifle as GB490 :) same .270, same 4831 (tho he preferred non magnum primers). What made him such a great hunter was not so much his eyes (which were 20/18) but his "game eye" as he could discern game in cover that most others simply couldn't detect at all. Remember, we were hunting the western mountains and plains where shots were made routinely at 3-4 hundred yards or better, in cover. I'm writing all this because every time I come to this channel, GB sparks a flood of pleasant memories:)

Ah the venerable Winchester .270. My grandfather had one. On his passing my cousin inherited it. I've never shot a .270 but I hope that some day I'll take the opportunity when it is presented. I've inherited grandad's Marlin 336 in .30-30. Manufactured back in the late 1890's to early 1900's so the serial number indicates. Still shoots great, still looks great. I know that I've probably put 60 rounds through it. Grandad probably put the same number thereabouts since he was an avid hunter. He would hunt somewhere in Wyoming, (with the .270) I don't recall, but I have one of his trips on a film that he shot (8mm) back in the day. He flew in on a DC3.

Enjoyed your presentation. Bought a SAKO Finnbear 270 on a whim, and was pleased with my first load. 140g Spire Point Hornady over 53g of 4831 surplus powder. The same load used in .280 and 30-06 with 160g and 155g respectively. I got a cold barrel shot and 4 more went into one hole an inch away. Good results. I'm using Winchester Stainless primers bought back in the mid 70's. I later was the lucky winner of a NRA Rifle of the Year, a 270 Weatherby with a Leupold Scope... a huge value... and a beautiful custom looking stock. Haven't fired it, may not.

@@russellapplegate5661 I forgot to mention, I use moly coated bullets, so the faster burn rate isn't a problem for me. That and my SAUER 202 hammered forged barrel is silky smooth, just like it's action.
@GunBlue490 Жыл бұрын
@@Oldhogleg Cold hammer forged barrels such as your Sauer and any of the modern Winchester and Brownings made by FN have super smooth bores that stay extremely clean and are very, very accurate. They are known for accomplishing better smoothness than most expensive, custom hand lapped target barrels. That smoothness also reduces bullet resistance, and thus, pressure for equivalent loads used in cut barrels. I've observed, with each of my three Model 70s that they are "slow" barrels. That is, that lessened resistance gives me slower velocities than my previous rifles of the same caliber. By the same token, they often will provide the same velocities with higher than standard charges at safe pressures, which of course must be approached with due care, as with any loads. This .270, with the same loads used with the same jug of powder as three previous family Sako rifles of the same barrel lengths, runs significantly slower, but with very mild, pressure indications. I have discovered standard velocity charges for my other two Model 70s, and will be doing more testing with this rifle to determine where and if standard velocities are safely achieved. On the basis of the other two, I fully suspect it will do the same. This is only my own personal observation with a small group of individual rifles, and I cannot make any scientific conclusions or statements regarding the veracity of my non laboratory observations. Always proceed with caution.
@cbsbass4142 Жыл бұрын
@@russellapplegate5661 To me it depends on Barrel length...that is, to get the most out of a slow powder, especially with a heavier bullet, I would love a 270 in a rifle like that sporter, but not in a featherweight with only a 22 inch barrel.

I’ve been reloading and bench shooting, extensively, for 55 years. I’ve always shot from a bench with the same body positioning that you do. Off side angled toward the target with the butt stock in the pocket of the shoulder. Lately I have been experimenting with the front square to the target with the butt stock more on the pectoral in line with the side of the neck. Doing so is supposed to promote more straight back, in line recoil, helping to allow for seeing trace and target impact on steel. Have you tried this? Any opinions? Maybe an idea for future video? Fond of this video and your content in general. I have three 270’s including a pre 64 standard grade that was my grandfather’s and a model 70 super grade that I bought new two years ago. They all shoot 1/2 inch. Best powder is H4831SC. RL 22, RL 19, IMR 4350, H4350, IMR 4831, and Vith 160 all shoot sub moa. Nice work using the drone as a target cam. Really enjoyed that.
@GunBlue490 Жыл бұрын
I actually prefer and use an upright posture wherever possible. The problem is that benches are so very frequently made by dedicated members of the club who know more about making picnic tables than shooting benches. A truly good bench requires a rarely seen adjustable seat, as opposed to a fixed, one-for-all height. The cut out is very often squared, rather than contoured to the human form, requiring one to straddle the span with one's arms awkwardly, with the rest too far away. I've used some exceptionally well designed benches that really worked for any person, but it's quite unusual, so most everything else simply requires adaptation.

Also, did you hear that Finland and Sweden ordered hundreds of thousands of AR-rifles from Sako? Bet those things are some quality battle rifles.
@GunBlue490 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. The standard front post of an AR rifle, in combination with other design features of the handguard and flash suppressor, does provide worthwhile ventilation and dispersion that is so necessary for combat rifle accuracy.

It is not a hot load at all but it gives me the same trajectory as the 280 AI. My old 300 magnum Weatherby Vanguard shooting a 180 gr partition at 3140 does shoot flatter out to 500 yards with a 24 inch drop value when sighted dead on at 200. The 7mm drop value at 500 is 31 inches. This is good to know when you're hunting in the same Altitude and temperatures. I have a friend who lives in Oklahoma and he misses those mule deer in Colorado because he never checked his zero at 8500 elevation and shoots over em every damn time. He's a stubborn old Indian guy that I have known since childhood.

GB, Another fine video. In one of your previous videos shooting the Winchester Model 70 in 270 Winchester, I thought the rifle you were shooting was one of the push feed versions. Am I wrong or is the one in this video a new or different rifle? I started hand loading for my Ruger 77R 270 Winchester in the early 1970's. I settled on 56 grains of H4831 behind a Hornady 150 grain spritzer which was the middle range load out of my old Speer #9 manual. It was supposed to be 2768 fps out of a 22" barrel. The top load listed was 58 grains for 2857 fps. I've never had access to a chronograph so I have no idea what kind of velocities I was getting but that load always produced groups under one inch at 100 yards off sand bags on the front of my jeep. I'd sight in about 3 inches high at 100 yards which gives a maximum effective point blank range of something over 300 yards if I remember correctly. The 150 grain loads don't shoot quite as flat as the 130's but they kill deer grave yard dead at anywhere from 50 to 300 yards with virtually no meat damage on shoulder shots. No loss at all on forward heart/lung shots. In 45 years or so of using this load I only had one that took more than one shot when I didn't get a good steady hold for the first shot. I'm not able to hunt much anymore because of some age and health problems, but I keep hoping things will get better with new knees and some work on my back. With that in mind I recently bought both IMR4350 and H4350 which I have never used before along with a new pound of H4831. I've read that the current lot of H4831 is a little faster than the older stuff I had on hand which was still packaged in a cardboard container with metal top and bottom. The new is all plastic bottles. I guess I'll need to start over to develop a safe and accurate maximum load. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

See my reply above, explaining "neck turning" as done for custom built Benchrest rifles. I just don't see how it could do much in a standard chamber. I can see where it could even cause loaded cartridges with inadquite neck tension to hold the bullet. Good choise buying that Model 70. Its one of the best! Forget the "neck turning" but DO go to "neck resizing" ONLY, which keeps all reloaded ammo fitting the large part of the chamber. Of course, you have to keep that brass seperated for only that one rifle.

I use IMR 4350 for the 270 if the barrel is 22 inches long, and 4831 for the 24 inch barrel. The longer barrel preferred the slower burn rate. 55 grains of 4350 is a dead ringer in the 22 inch barrel 270 using 130 grain ballistic tips in my Remington sportsman 78. I always let them barrels cool for 15 minutes between shots because it gives them time to retract from the heat. It will take about an hour for me to test a 3 round group at 100 yards. Believe me, you will get blown away at the dramatic shrinking of your group. My Remington sendero has a 26 in barrel and I don't have to reload for accuracy. It will poke all three into a single jagged hole at 100 yards with the old factory 130 grain winchester power points. The hardest part is making myself wait for about 15-20 minutes between shots, but when I am hunting, it's very reassuring to know that you don't skimp in the smallest.

I like you and your videos. Today you discussed "neck turning". As a benchrest shooter, please allow me to explain why and when it should be done. Standard rifles, like the wonderful model 70, have pretty loose chamber necks to allow for varation in ammunition brass. In benchrest shooting we use a tight neck chamber diameter that pretty much no factory ammunition would even fit into. Heres what we do. Shooting 6mm bullets (for example) a common benchrest chamber neck is .263. Subtract .243 for that 6mm bullet and you only have .020 left for the brass case. I turn my necks down to a thickness of .009 making my loaded ammo .261, a snug but perfect fit in that .263 chamber neck. You can't do this on a standard rifle because the manufactuor already made the neck MUCH larger than that. For a standard rifle, even your wonderful Model 70, you would have to replace the barrell with a custom chambered bbl, chambered with a tight neck. Otherwise, I would think thinning down your brass by turning might actually fail to hold the bullet tight enough unless you had custom loading dies made and even then you gain litle or nothing.

Yep. You're correct. My video isn't addressed to the benchrest clan who fiddle with minutia and expensive custom rifles, but to those who can do pretty darn well with a standard sporter. The last 1/4" comes at a very high cost.

Thanks for the video! I think I've watched almost every one you've ever done, many two and three times! Could you do a talk about non-lead rifle bullets and if they are as effective as lead bullets? There is talk about lead bullets being banned in more states and maybe even nationwide at some point. I don't care to go into the politics or the reasons, I'm just interested in what to do if it happens. And if copper bullets can be as effective as lead bullets for the most common types of game, like whitetails. Thanks for all you do!

I'm hoping to do that soon.
