No problem captain I remember when you get a four-blade propeller it's better to get a smaller size a smaller pitch to compensate because it might case one side loaded the bull with all the gear and extra weight the RPMs go down a little bit so you want to get those RPMs up and thank you for watching

I was always told to drop 2 pitches down when going from a 3 blade to a 4. That would bring your max engine rpm up too. Plus stronger acceleration as a bonus.

Another thought on pitch. If a lesser pitch is unavailable, check with a quality prop shop like FJ Prop Miami to see it they can make an adjustment. Back in the day I was with Pitman Photo Offshore Racing and for a while Mercury supplies our engines so they could test engine mods on our boat. There prop guys, Dennis Cavanaugh, actually in Fond Du Lac would adjust our props to fit exactly what Mercury wanted. It’s definitely possible and probably not that expensive to have done. Sorry fir the long comment. Great video by the way.

Great test Cap. When I test props, I always test it with full fuel and a load that corresponds to 2 person. I usually pick the prop that reaches the mid range between low/high WOT rpm limit f.ex. 5.500 rpm within the limit of 5.000-6.000 WOT rpm. In your case, I would pick 1" lower pitch so your WOT rpm could reach close to 5.500 rpm. I really looking forward to your next trip to the Bahamas and see your fuel usage. Navigate safe.

Hi Capt... this is great information. I think a lot of us would benefit by changing props. I cannot change my prop from on the boat; I'd need to be in the water or on the trailer. It's easier for me to be in the water... I see below there are some who recommend a lower pitch; it would be nice to have access to multiple props to get try them all out. But, buying a large variety of props would be expensive. I've also been thinking about raising my engine about an inch as the anti-cavitation plate is under water when I'm running on plane. It measures out to be correct when out of the water, but runs a bit bow high unless I use the trim tabs..... Thank you for the hard work it took to put this video together!...
@OutOnTheReef

yes you are right this propellers are well over $300 and we can buy multiple pitch ,but since i go mid range this will really get my bow down and fuel economy, and i do see your problem about changing the prop being on the boat, but you can go to the shallow ware is calm and be in 2 feet of water no problems ,and do it on summer time before winter comes lol. thanks for you comment cap.

I just replaced the prop on a fresh water runabout. The only prop in stock was a 4 blade. I decided to go with 4 blades because a lot of time is spent manuvering around other boats in the marina and also docking to a houseboat. I found that the four blade prop gave me way more control at lower RPMs. Even reverse was noticeably improved.

Back in my boat racing days, we'd take several props to the lake and test them. The 4 blade is the correct type for your boat but I'd take 3 or 4 props at 2" pitch intervals in order to get the rpms close to 6k. Dropping 1 or 2" pitch might get your speed up a little as well as maintain mpg and on-plane time. A good dealer will let you try several props and allow you to purchase the one that best suits your application.

Where I am, we usually don't have many days of slick, calm water. I have a 24ft with twin 150s. I went from 3 blade to 4 blade. What a difference! When fighting swells or strong current, I have a lot more torque to push through. I try not to run more than 2/3 throttle as it makes a big difference in fuel consumption with 2 strokes.

I had a Mercury Vengence 14 x 19 and my max speed was 45 on a good day. Most of the time 43mph. It would also loose speed in turns when pulling a tube. I tried a 15.5 x 17 3 blade and it caused vibrations. I switched to an Apollo 14.25 x 19 and the boat felt sluggish getting to top speed. The Apollo has a lot of cupping. Hole shot was ok, but after that took forever to hit 40. I got a Solas HR4 14 x 17 4 blade. Hole shot was fantastic, on plane 3 seconds and got to 40mph much quicker. Top speed was about 45mph at 4700 rpm. My boat is heavy being a 99 Sea Ray Sundeck 240 with a 5.0. Also pulling tubes, no problem for the 4 blade. It doesn't slow down in a turn. Just set it to the speed you want and leave it. In smooth water I bet it will hit 47mph and a light load. But like others said, you are over propped at 5100rpm. You could try a better blade like the Merc Revolution.

Before even watching the video I can tell you I used to fly model planes with a couple guys who were engineers. They would experiment with one bladed props and a counter weight. But I will have to agree with other probably more knowledgeable commenters and if it were my boat I'd want to see a few hundred more rpm at the top end to have a happier engine when you are full fuel, full water, full provisions. I don't know outboards but not being able to hit max rpm on a diesel under light load is a big no-no.

Changing from a 3 blade to a 4, I definitely had more bottom end torque (Have the 4.3 inboard). Great for water skiing. The good news, going to a 4 blade helped me with my WOT. I no longer have to worry about blowing the engine since WOT hit exactly 200 RPM below my redline at a perfect pitch. Top end speed was the same at 55 mph. Could go faster with the 3 blade, it would just blow the motor. Dropped the RPM down dramatically helping fuel economy at cruising speeds at around 30 mph. Happy I made this change!

I should had emphasized a little more on my props. I switch from a 19 pitch 3 blade alum. to a 21 pitch 4 blade alum. on my Alpha 2 outdrive. I tried a 23 pitch 3 blade but if felt like there was too much load and it took more time out of the hole shot. So I tried the Solas alum. 4 blade and it was perfect. More torque for sure, but my guess is it kind of acts like a 22 pitch 3 blade that don't exist???

I concur with what most have said about too much pitch on that prop. Your engine is not at its HP potential at 5100 rpms at a very light load. You may see the reverse of what you want when you are loaded for the Bahamas. I would take your prop and numbers to a reputable prop shop and see what they say. In many instances, they can change pitch a size or two with your prop. Keep us posted capt!

Of course a boat running at a higher rpm will consume more fuel. You need to get the engine running at the same rpm’s in order to determine data, unless your motor cant turn a 4-blade prop at 5700rpm. All in all, a good effort to compare the two though. Keep at it, Cap.

@@OutOnTheReef The 4 blade seems not ideal. Of course we have to know what the load on board is. If it's half loaded then the 3 blade suits better. 4 blade @ 5100rpm (full throttle), with the outboard's optimum range of 5000-6000rpm and half loaded boat, seems quite a bit low and will result in engine problems at some point. There are some excellent little programs on the web and in forums, to help you out, by entering some basic data of the boat - outboard - weights etc. they give you a reference at what prop should be used.

@@OutOnTheReef Some rough calculations show that the Slip of the 3 blade is 12%, which is crazy high at Full throttle. Looks the correct prop is the 3 blade but different pitch or diameter, let me check again Try a 3 blade 20-21 pitch, or 15" diameter and see if the (otherwise optimum) rpm drop drastically, if not, then your slip will be reduced so consumption and your engine will work more efficiently.

Saludos Capitan!!!

Maximum rpm of 5100 RPMs is really bad considering that you’re in a lake and a pretty light load not a Bahamas load you should keep that in mind. To reach the proper RPMs you would need to go down on pitch like three pitches.

The props shown on your video are different pitches than the links you provided. My understanding is when going to 4 blade you should add at least 2 pitches to compensate for the additional drag. So for me I’m considering going from a 3 blade 3x16x20 to a 4x16x22. That should keep me in the same RPM band. Your 4 blade actually had fewer rpm’s at WOT and appeared to be at the bottom of the RPM band. What were the pitch and diameter of your 2 test props. Thanks.

If you can't return the prop a prop shop might be able to reduce the pitch by maybe 1" That isn't enough but if the engine is deep enough they can cut the diameter a small amount Also mounting the engine higher on the transom will increase rpm. Pitch measurement is not in degrees It is in inches. The number represents how far the prop would advance in one revolution thru a semi solid like Jello

I have a 2 blade, 3 blade and 4 blade. 2 blades are preferred for racing, 3 blades are also for racing but excludes drag or hydropower racing. The 3 blade props are mostly prefered for fast boats to larger cruiser. Whereas the 4 or 5 blades are for heavy workload and vibration-less thrust. As I have a 125kph speed boat, I use a 3 blade. I used a 2 blade and did not go well for a 4 meter Salem ski boat (could pull only 3 skiers whereas the 4 blade did so without loss of speed poerwer by its Chevy 400ci engine. Bigger boats with bigger engines require bigger props. The selection of blades depend on the tests to get maximum thrust and speed to what the engine can cope with.

Ehh nothing wrong with swapping a prop on the water. I think it would be preferable to have a buddy on board just in case you know something unexpected were to happen. Personally I run a 3 blade stainless ballistics prop with a hub saver kit on my 1995 20 foot Sea Arrow center console inboard with a Volvo Penta V6 4.3 liter mated to a OMC SX out drive. The motor was rebuilt and a bigger cam was put in and a bigger carburetor. A 4bbl Holley 4160 600 cfm carburetor.it bright it from it's original 190 HP to 225 HP. It also sounds pretty good you can hear it on my page in my videos if you care to look. I can't remember the exact torque off the top of my head I'd have to dig out the build sheet . My main cruising rpm is usually between 2700 rpm to 4250 on the higher end on average. At about 3800 to 4000 rpm I run about 30 mph depending on the conditions. Wot is recommended 5000 rpm and I run 45 to 50 depends on conditions again. But I don't run at that rpm often. I Only run that if a Storm is coming or I need to get in for an emergency or in a hurry. Or sometimes just for fun but top speed isn't a huge concern with me . I pack quite a bit of gear and keep some tools and a spare prop and my anchor things like that . I have also added 2 batteries from the original 2 . Then installed an audio system and lights, but basically I have probably added a good estimate I'd say 350 ish lbs of extra weight . That's not including fishing gear and people food and a full ice chest . As far as people usually it's either me and my wife or us and our 3 kids or us and another couple. At max I prefer 6 people just for the comfort level. I have noticed out of the hole it's a little slow to get on plane especially if the boat is heavy in the back . And depending on my load it has a hard time on plane as far as maintaining a good plane at lower speeds. The boat is rated for 10 persons plus 250 in extra gear. So I'm well within weight safety. And it's not a huge problem persay just a noticeable one . I'm ok with sacrificing a little top end speed for a better hole shot and slower and better planing ability at lower speed. I feel like a 4 bladed prop would be more suitable to what I desire . Would you agree givin everything I have mentioned? I have looked up compatible prop options and found a 4 blade with the correct diameter and pitch so I know mechanically it would be ok but do you think I would get the results I'm looking for ?
