It looks like an interesting generator, especially in cloudy weather it will be a second source among the solar panels.

Attach a big sheet to the existing tail to extend it because it's inadequate, don't waste your time, otherwise it will turn away from the wind. Also do you see the large gap between the stator and magnets? It's terrible, you could reduce it by accurately gluing on pieces of transformer (or motor) steel. Don't make the usual mistake of putting the turbine low, put it high above surrounding houses, trees etc. It would be best to use a mppt controller but you could use a boost converter too. Stock controller is weak and will limit the power.

I purchased the veg or claimed to be 500watt. Lucky to get another power to power a torch . Finally pulled it down and put it in the rubbish bin. Stick to solar power. When there’s not enough sun I boost the batteries with a battery charger. I found I power was going out of batteries with the wind turbo. Soon as I disconnected the power to it my my Charing rate went up. No mod wind turbine for me

Maybe a stupid question. Is it possible to use a solar mppt 800w such as a Hoymiles (plug&play) after the orange mppt in this video (12 volt output) ?
@FixitEasyDIY
@FixitEasyDIY Ай бұрын
I think the controller in this video is not real MPPT, so perhaps you can use it after it, but it will cause more losses.

QQ: I just got the Vevor 400w turbine. Is it OK to just add the 2 wires from it's controller to an existing battery which is now fed from a separate solar controller (keeping the controllers separate)? Thanks!

It would be fine to charge the battery with both controllers and energy sources :)

I have a cheap China 500-watt, 5 blade, 12 v that runs as fast as it can and sounded like it was coming apart. It never put anything on the display. Drill test I did not get the start charging rpm. BUT it makes 6 amps at 800 rpm and 29 amps at 1600 rpm with no controller. It will never do 500-watts. Long story short. I plan to do a 2:1 gearing. That might be a little too much. Might be to slow but I put 36 by 6 by 4 blades on it. But as fast as it could go with the 5 blades it did nothing hooked up as it should be. The controller put the brakes on around 6 amps. (DRILL TEST) I did put the 2:1 bike chain on it and the chain came off. Yes it made a little power before the chain came off. We did have an ice buildup that may have made the chain to come off. I took it down and put the chain back on. But it is too thigh and will not turn. Just going to leave it up for a while to see what it does. I'm still testing also. I have low wind here (9 to 10 mph most of the time) just looking for low watts at times. The China 5 blades were cut off 6 inch's and run much faster now. I may put them back on China 500-watt turbine too see what it will do. They are on a 38-volt 12-amp Ameteck motor right now. That so for is my expense with the 500-watt junk. Cut the blades down 4 to 6 inches' it may do ok in a very Windey area. Good luck with yours.

There is no need to use the cables in a certain order. The converter will do it's job for giving DC output power. This is why they used one colour cables there.

Note that the charge controller is PWM not MPPT. I have that orange controller & there is no way it is MPPT. This video (not mine confirms that) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHbZimtjqLWHfrMsi=dRqzomsORVLnvytF . However as a controller, it does work. Other than that, it looks a reasonable build. I liked the fact they hadn't used the thinnest wires possible from the windings to the slip rings.
@FixitEasyDIY
@FixitEasyDIY Жыл бұрын
I just watched it. You are right it doesn't look like MPPT. It is a good controller dough, but i have some concerns about the max current at full speed. This sand filling isn't actually bad, it can transfer heat to the aluminium body. Of course it will accumulate heat, but it will quickly dissipate through the heat sink. I like how they managed to use the transistors to shorten the windings and engage the brake of the blades. I am waiting for the warm weather to come to do some field testing ;)

Not enough windings or magnets for 500w. Duameter of rotor too small. Probably 100w peak. Slipring quality look very good though. Better than capsule format.

All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity! And only at very high costs! Because there is hardly any wind close to the ground. It is also extremely gusty, which usually shortens the service life extremely! Only if you need to be self-sufficient from the power grid & live close to the sea, you should install the largest possible wind turbine on a high mast. *With solar modules, on the other hand, reliably generate electricity for 25 years at approx. 3-10 cent/kWh!*
