Recently received this lovely ThinkPad running Windows XP from the early 2000s. So let's check it out and put it through its paces! I'll probably add more RAM and swap the HDD for an SSD, but for now it's in its original form as Big Blue intended.

These retro computers are getting farther in time than I'm comfortable with. I love it when LGR shows off a computer I used as a kid, but it's uncomfortable seeing the laptop I used at my boring desk job in the early 2000s being "retro". 👴 It WAS a great laptop though.

"It was working earlier." That was before you started recording it. Now it has performance anxiety. "Why was the trackpad disabled?" To annoy you. The volume control is not your friend here. Now it works, now it doesn't. Gotta love the sound quality, too. It SOUNDS like crunchy old laptop speakers. Wow, DOSbox is struggling. And I love the terrific Tomb Raider soundtrack. "I'd test this, but I have no floppies. They're all at my house. Not my house, in storage. They're all in storage." (stares blankly into space while having existential crisis)

I imagine jumping through hoops to put together videos after the storm damage and all that has been strange and odd. I would also assume that you're getting more satisfaction from the completed videos post 'hurricane'. Anyways, it says alot about your character, because putting together videos is alot of work when you have all your ducks lined up, twice the work when things get upturned like that.

"Welcome to an LGR Existential Crysis thing!" 17:25 and 22:55 Yes, the TR3 ripped version had music issues. Usually music didn't play but when it did it often glitched. There is a button in the training map/mansion that you can press to turn on some classical music. We quit the map and loaded a save and some 2-3 sec loop kept on going and it was a pretty creepy one.

I love the IBM Thinkpad and the design is in MY opinion absolutely amazing. In 2007 I got one Thinkpad from my neighbour because bought a Mac. The Thinkpad was only three years old, it had upgraded memory, a 120gb harddrive. I installed Debian on it and used it as a media server and just play my music on it. It was so stable and it had a uptime for 730 days before a power outage. But in the end, it worked flawlessly for ten years before I retired it. I don't know what the quality of the Lenovo Thinkpads these days, surely they can't be of the same quality as the IBM Thinkpad.

From what I remember, the Aquarium screen saver that came with the Windows Pro pack was basically a demo version with a reduced number of fish choices and maybe a max fish in the tank limitation, or something like that, but still more than the actual downloadable demo version of the screensaver. And I think somewhere in the screensaver config for it, it advertised getting more with the retail version.

Given the inclusion of Yooper Bars, I wonder if this machine came from a Northern Michigan University student or professor. They had a program where every student got the same ThinkPad, and this looks like a very similar configuration to an R31 I got second hand back in the day from some NMU folks.

God. The number of this generation that we sold refurbished at Computer Resource Plus in 2003 or so (aka a Computer Renaissance that the owner didn't want to pay the franchise fee for anymore) was astronomical. They ranged from $529 to $689 depending on RAM/HDD/Mhz but all ran that same Celeron chip from something like 433-566Mhz I think? I guess the ones we sold were probably a generation older if you're seeing ghz speeds. I reinstalled Windows and popped in the same burned driver disc to fill out the missing audio and networking probably 60 times a month. Wild times.

The port replicators (two types) are on their way. The housing on your R31 looks a lot like the housing on my T23. On mine the HDD is behind the cover around the headphone/microphone ports, of what I could see in the video yours might be the same. The thing I haven't found out yet is the self-powered docks (the ones that have a PCI slot) work with the R31 (I have a couple each of the T20 and T40 docks). The CS00 connector may not be in the exact same alignment (can never tell with IBM).

I have a ThinkPad from this era. $1600 new in the late 90's to 2000. It's still around here somewhere. I am fairly certain the fan has failed because it shuts off within 10 minutes of booting up. I altered mine. The bevel was so big I fit a USB hub inside plus a wifi and bluetooth dongle and have two ports cut out of the side, bringing the single USB 1.0 port up to 2 ports. The holes are the perfect size. That industrial plastic is sturdy. Some drilling and needle file worked well. All wires internal. The GPU is so weak at 8MB of RAM.

I spent years working my way owning and restoring every IBM-badged Thinkpad and I eventually gave up on the R-series. I think they were made by Acer with some cross-changable parts from the T-series. So us Think nerds would say they were not proper thinkpads. No matter how good the ones I owned and restored were, put them away for an hour, a day, a month and something would stop working. I sold them all.

I have an X31 with one of those docking stations that just makes it fatter but still leaves it portable (Ultrabase?) and that thing has a serial port - very convenient! That wasn't an option for the R31 though, but normal Mini-docks and Port replicators should also have serial ports.

Makes me want to pull out my IBM T30 think pad with the track pad still running XP professional but is suffering from only reading one ram stick due to broken solder joints on the ram socket for one stick.

LOL Clint, you were totally speaking in tongues at 14:44! I can’t say anything, though, I do it daily myself. Brain gets ahead of the mouth and you’re suddenly speaking Andorian!

The first computer i ever owned was a base model T30. My dad picked it up at a church sale for $5 back in 2008. Watched a ton of movies on it as a kid. Regret not keeping it knowing how much they go for nowadays.

Something that still gets me is how games like UT and QIII:A worked well on dial-up MP and now there are so many games that can’t do decent online MP w/o higher end broadband.
