In case you’re wondering who needs the services whether it be Apple or other satellite communication devices. Here’s something to think about. If you travel a lot like I do, I’m a long-haul truck driver. You will find you go through many dead spots in some areas of the country Where there is absolutely no cellular service for in some cases over 100 miles. I have run across people who have been broke down or people who have been involved in accidents with no way to call for help. That’s why I now have my iPhone 14 promax and I still carry my Garmin GPS, in reach unit.

Better than nothing, I guess. Honestly, this should be a mandated feature on all cell phones. If my out-of-service backup cell phone can annoy me at 1AM with amber alerts, then it should be able to beam a satellite SOS signal as well.

Funny how WSJ has Joanna out there talking about Apple the whole time.

The most useful feature of my InReach is probably the weather, which can help me better plan a canoe trip while a storm arrives. It also let me send let me communicate with anyone, and preset messages are unlimited. I would love to see those feature on the iPhone too.

Seems like the SOS feature really comes in real handy when you find yourself in a difficult situation. Network signals aren't always available in whatever region or place you're from.

Apple should offer a pay per use because a monthly subscription would be useless due to subscribers non usage of this service monthly.

This would be good out west if you mountain or desert camp alot. Also, if you could use it at sea. They should have an activation fee with a per use fee. I use to use a Sat Phone in the Army and I think calls were $1/min.

Trying to locate a signal by physically moving here and there makes this practically useless in case of an actual emergency. This is like taking a matchbox in the middle of the woods instead of a torch. Just buy dedicated equipment.

Update to this video, Apple now offers messaging friends and family via satellite as part of iOS 18.
@workhardforit2 жыл бұрын
Kind of disappointed that Apple isn't proactively deploying this in countries like mine that are situated in Southeast Asia where Tsunamis, Earthquakes, and Hurricanes/Typhoons happen frequently throughout the year. We NEED this and that's one of the reasons why we are all planning on upgrading to the iPhone 14 series. We badly need this, we experience 16 typhoons every year, blackouts that last weeks, etc.

Then I think 911 would be your better option. This is for off the grid emergencies. Why would you go off grid if you have heart issues?

Starlink could have been a much better company now but it’s owner decided to squander $44B onto another tech company that’s on the verge of bankruptcy. Apple’s innovative emergency service will improve over time without Starlink’s help.

…uuuh, me`thinks simply ‘more’ people need to take {and update} certificate-classes in First-Aid Trauma Care simply for the benefit [and personal increase in self-esteem] of all family, friends and ‘people’ around you 24/7; rather than relying on “gliches” in technology [think: low battery, damaged phone (if you are ‘also’ injured), or, simply unable [you or the phone-tech] to make the satellite connection; Hallo 🤷🏻♀️‼️
