YES, PLEASE do more cheap vs expensive. These are so helpful to our wallets. Also, they are fun to watch. A great BIG TYFS.
@garringtonillustration96956 жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison. From the test swatches you did I feel the cheaper gouache has less pigment and more fillers then the more expensive brand. The more expensive brand allows for a little paint to go a long way, hence as to why it’s so thick, as you have the option to water it down to your own preference. Or to add white to reach the desired shade. IMPO I think Arteza is a good student starter gouache, like Reeves or ShinHan (I used to believe ShinHan was a high quality brand until I learned they use bad very fugitive pigments in their watercolours, so now I place them in the student paint range personally). Winsor & Newton, Holbein or Schmincke are the more professional gouache paint brands with better quality purer pigments and ingredients in them. I suppose the ultimate test is a lightfastness test if you plan to sell original gouache paintings. Certainly the bright pinks will most likely fade quickly. Overall the lightfastness for gouache is pretty poor compared to watercolour or acrylic for example, but that isn’t a huge deal if you plan to only sell prints of the originals. Or for sketchbooks and roughs for example. So in summary if you only plan to sell prints then it is purely your own preference whether you use the cheap or expensive brands of gouache, but if you want to sell original gouache paintings then you might want to pay attention to the lightfastness of the brand you choose. In which case, buy the best you can afford. Personally if you have never tried gouache and don’t know which to choose, then get a single tube from different brands and try them out. You’ll find the colour, flow, texture may be different. Plus remember that paper choice also plays a huge roll. Hot press and cold pressed watercolour paper and Bristol board are good ones to try with gouache. Sorry that was a bit of a ramble. And in no way am I trying to be snobby or off putting or brand shaming. Just wanted to add some information out there for those that may find it useful.

This is really good to know. I have been wanting to try Gouache, but I had no idea which paper would work well. I learnt a lot from your comment so thank you for rambling. I do not think it is brand bashing to explain differences because that information can actually save a person money both ways. If I want to do art for myself or sell prints I appreciate knowing in advance that I can go cheaper and if I want to make something that I want to last maybe I need to wait, or budget, for the more lightfast paint. However I would have been upset putting in all the effort and making something that I like just to have it fade. I did not know the differences between paints in terms of lightfast value. So thank you for your rant 🥰. Very clear and useful information.
@juliegarrington3031 Жыл бұрын
@@gilashroot8697 Your most welcome. Most paint brands will have a colour chart available with little symbols next to each colour that can tell you the light fastness, opacity, etc., which is very useful if your not sure which paints to invest in for their properties. Some also do dot cards. Dot cards are a paper sample with small dots of a brands paint that you can test out. Of course this is only available for paints that are re-wettable, so tend to be mainly watercolours.
@taylorkh8186 жыл бұрын
Most gouache will reactivate when layered, it's a commonly known trait of the medium. Blue can be more prone to it depending on the pigment used. A lot of blue pigments are non staining so they lift easily.

TO CLEAR THINGS UP I can see why people are getting offended by when you call things cheap because cheap mainly means that it doesn’t cost much AND it’s not very good. INEXPENSIVE is a better word to use because it mainly means that it doesn’t cost as much as expensive stuff. This is not a hate comment but more a constructive criticism 😊

Great video! I'd been considering trying the Arteza gouache paints so this is very helpful :) For the longest time I thought I *hated* gouache because my first experience with it was a really cheap little set that was... really not good (absolutely no opacity even when used straight from the tube, so no layering :( ). I tried it again more recently with the WN primaries set and got much more into both those and acrylic gouache!

I wish when I tested Gouache I had Arteza :D seems many people say that they are pretty good for the price. I had the Reeves ones and since I have the Winsor&Newton Designers Gouache I love Gouache even more than before! I practice with it a lot since I got it and I love it. The only thing what got me a bit sad is, that I put them into a palette and it cracked. Like some would just break and fall out of the little tint :(

@@stayinginbedallday-_-160 I appreciate that greatly. Honestly, I haven't checked in awhile. I got the Jazza art box set and have been forbidden by my budget to but any new art supplies (besides necessary replacements) for two full years. Like YES, Comment No. I think maybe $10.00 is not an expensive cost for Gouache! I can not recommend DaVinci Paint company enough these days! I love that their Gouache has superior light-fast ratings and that is unusual for Gouache! But it is an Artist quality paint $6 to $8 a tube they are larger size at 37ML each! If you ever want to test them out they might send a sample to an accomplished youtube artist like you for a good price! My Arteza gouache paints are good quality but the DaVinci paints are superior Just my 2ç.
