Explosion damage isn't technically based on leggings, its just the lower part of the player. Thats why having any block between your lower half and an explosion source will negate most or all damage. This also depends on angles and the percentage of your legs protected. Having the entire block between will reduce most damage, whereas if you're at an angle vertically or horizontally, as to have some of the block protecting you, but some of you is still exposed, you'll take more damage

As a Crystal player, yes your right, even if a pixel of your hitbox is out(like in honey) you take more damage compared to fully encased below, another thing is 1 block is not true, it just negates so mucg that it seems like 2 blocks

9:10 Pretty sure that was the 2020 April fools update. They just used a texture pack. In the April fools update, when you threw a book in a nether portal, it would change color and generate a random dimension. They retextured the book to amethyst and the obsidian in the portal frame to amethyst blocks. (Just ignore the fact the dimension they go to at the end clearly has sculk and a Warden despite them not being added for like another 2 years.)

13:16 all explosions in minecraft do damage to your feet, so the way it works is when an explosion occurs the block that caused the explosion fires thousands of invisible rays only viseble to the game engine, these rays deal a slight amount of damage but due to there being thousands the more rays that hit the player's feet the more damage they take, so that why when placing a block right in front of your feet before an explosion saves you.
