Truck was in 2wd the whole time. If I tried this with my duramax the outcome would be much worse.

These trucks are essentially a Chevy K30 with the Gm 14 bolt rear and Dana Corp 60 front axle. 700r4 auto transmission with 4.56 gears. Trucks were not really rated to go above 55mph. This was mainly because the deuce and a half trucks and larger could not go much faster than 55 or at least you would not want to take them over that speed. You can still get these M1008 trucks from Government auctions for cheap or even online too. Changing the gears from a 4.56 to a 3.73 would help out mileage and you could get 20mpg or so...but the 700r4 would be hunting gears on a small hill or headwind. The military 6.2L GM diesel runs a 24 volt system with 2 12 volt alternators in series for the starter, but everything else is 12 volt. These are street legal trucks and can be bought. Not many like the old GM 6.2L IDI because it was only built for a little work but mostly fuel economy. Civilian trucks came in 130hp and 143hp. Military apps such as these came with around 165hp and 330lb/ft of torque at 2100 RPM.

A posi track is a limited slip differential. The vehicle in this video has a Detroit locker not a "Posi Track".

I keep hearing how "WEAK" the np208 is. In fact its not weak. Its not as strong or durable as the NP205 but it is NOT a WEAK transfercase. Also with tires up to 35" I doubt you would break it in this vehicle with its current engine. Now throw on some 40" tires and put a big block in then I would say yes this is the "weak" link. In stock form the NP208 performs very well.

I had a 6.2 in a K30 crewcab of the same vintage and that truck would go anywhere. I got my Dodge Cummings Club Cab stuck badly several times trying to go places that old farm truck passed easily. As I moved both the tires and the lift over to the Dodge I always thought the difference was interesting.

@DieselPowerTV A 12-valve Cummins (P-pumped version) would be the best option. Easiest swap also.
@DriverSideImpact100812 жыл бұрын
@HUMMVE100 The M1008's used NP208 T-Case. M1031 and some M1028's used NP205's(205's are super tough). All CUCV's had a TH400 trans, Dana 60 front axle, A Corporate 14 bolt with a Detroit locker (a.k.a. Gov-Lok), and 4.56 gears. Additionally, M1028 & M1031's had limited slip in the front axle. Regardless, the drivetrain on the trucks is very tough, and the 6.2 diesel isn't a bad engine either. If you did an engine swap, your best bet would be to get a 5.9L 6BT Cummins attached to a NV4500 trans.
@rbarger718 жыл бұрын
Those are some bad trucks and that 6.2L screams running down the highway @55 mph too. Made for long trips to Fort Sill or Fort Smith for annual training. I never cared much for those 4.56 gears, but they were built more for off-roading(in the military sense of the word) than running at highway speeds. Still, tho, I think 3.73 would have been better cos not once did I ever see any of these CUCV's pulling anything. Wouldn't mind having one them tho as they were built heavy duty.
@noahgaray79234 жыл бұрын
rbarger71 they needed the 4.56s because the 6.2 was a piece of shit with no power. The military picks the lowest bid. Too bad ford hadn’t had a lower bid. Would love to have seen ford CUCVs with a 6.9 c6 F350 with 4.10s

what is really wrong with the 6.2 I have one of these trucks mine is non military I swapped my 454 out for a 6.2 and swapped my th400 auto for an nv4500 no turbo yet and I dont think I have desire to put one on I had a 98 dodge with a cummins and personally I favor the 6.2 guess its opinion based on what I do to my truck but i think anyone who put an nv4500 behind a 6.2 and new the ideosyncrocies of the 6.2 and how to overcome them would never consider a cummins swap as an option

whats so bad about the motor? Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of power, but if you wanna go fast, buy a car. These are meant to be bulletproof, torquey, offroad monsters. Nothing you'd every want to take to the strip anyway.
