There is no science behind any of these hacks. There is however, a lot of science behind why they don't work. *On dunking nails in icy water Nail polish dries as the organic solvents (generally a combination of ethyl and butyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol) inside it evaporate out into the air, so of course dunking your nails in water will cause your nails to dry slower than in open air. The organic solvent molecules now have to travel through a polar liquid (sort of like oil traveling through water), which will take much longer than open air solvent evaporation. Solvents also evaporate faster at higher temperatures. Much of the heat to evaporate the solvents on your nails actually comes from your fingers. If you stick your fingers and nails in a freezing cold situation, it will also slow down the evaporation of solvents and drying of the polish. *On vinegar+lemon juice Acetone is an incredibly strong organic solvent. That is why it quickly breaks down the lacquer of your nail polish and removes it so well. You can also use the same solvents in the polish such as butyl acetate, but it will be less effective than acetone (see acetone-free nail polish removers). Vinegar and lemon juice are two different weak acids (acetic and citric), which are nothing like acetone. Maybe you could kind of argue that acetic acid becomes acetate once deprotonated, but an acetate ion and ehtyl acetate behave in completely different ways. Anyway, you can't use weak acids in place of organic solvents, so of course the acid polish remover would be a miserable failure of a hack. *On perfume as polish remover Alternatively, ethanol (the alcohol generally used in perfumes) is a weaker organic solvent. Isopropyl alcohol probably would have worked marginally better (because it is a slightly stronger solvent), but either alcohol could be used to redissolve and wipe off that polish, only not nearly as effectively as acetone. *I... I just can't even for this one Cooking oil as a top coat... I mean maybe somebody had heard the words "organic" and "nail polish" and thought that any only organic compound could do the trick? *On sugar spill clean-up Sugar doesn't dissolve in the organic solvents in the nail polish (especially since they are over-saturated with the lacquer and color already in them), and so it stays mostly dry and the thick polish gets stuck up in the space between the large sugar crystals. Similarly sized salt grains would also likely do the trick. Remember, everyone: NAIL ART /IS/ A SCIENCE!!!

@@vi843 For a double boiler, you place a pan of water over a heat source (for some uses you can also use a bowl of boiling water, but it's not really a double boiler) and put a bowl of bigger proportions over it (The bowl must touch the water). The principle is that the water will not go over 100°C at liquid phase, so it's a way to control the heat the ingredients in the bowl receive.

Milk comes in Bags in Canada because we can buy larger amounts of it. I can buy 4 one litre milk bags of milk for a small price. It doesn't only come in bags either, we have the milk carton version as well. As for the sugar, there's obviously a variety of ways you can buy it, it depends on the company. We, in Canada, just enjoy a variety instead of the same old boring stuff is all 🇨🇦🇨🇦

I think the reason the pepper trick is supposed to work is because the heat of the pepper is actually supposed to damage the nail. Doing this once a month trains the nail to need to be stronger and grow faster. But that is also why you aren't supposed to do it more than once a month.

Since the video is basically from another era, this comment will probably die here, but about... The mystery of using ~*nail polish or taco*~ as nail polish remover: Nail polish contains a solvent to help the polish stay liquid. It's volatile, meaning it turns into gas at room temperature (this is why nail polish has its nail polish smell and why you shouldn't smell it excessively). Y'know any other volatile solvents? Sure do: Acetone. There is not precisely acetone in the nail polish, but something with very similar characteristics. So basically, there IS nail polish remover in liquid nail polish. It just evaporates after some time and then the polish is hard. But if you put it on already hardened polish, it's enough to liquefy it again.
