Yup. Paint comparability is a wounderous thing, It's wonderful when it works and a " wonder why" when it doesn't. Thanks to another educational video.

Very informative video. It is a hit-and-miss issue using lacquer over plastic. I always prime my models with automotive primer no matter what I topcoat with and doing so has worked for well over 40 builds so far. As for a shine, being lacquer, it should polish out very nicely.

I use spray Duplicolor clear on a regular basis and rarely have trouble. I mist coat over decals then lay it on heavy. I always polish to achieve a brilliant shine. I will try a can since it’s a better deal. Thanks!

Years ago autobody painters would spray unthinned or lightly thinned lacquers at low pressure to make cobwebs in their paint jobs. It came out about like what you showed but a little thicker.

It works for me as well, I don't use Mr.Color Levelling Thinner though. I use generic lacquer thinner to thin the dupli-color clear gloss/matte to shoot out of an air-brush, granted I only exclusively use Tamiya, Mr.Color, Testors and Dupli-Color paints. Also works for protecting parts/paints/finishes for Tamiya panel liners.

Nice test! I've had a lot of similar results with mixing different products together on a project and I've found that for me if put a couple of coats of water based poly down over something like acrylic, I can put about anything on over that. It has to be a couple of good coats though or it will eat through and the acrylic will lift. I mix it up all the time now having that trick. It does work for some chromes so they aren't affected by the solvents. If I'm using a solvent based clear, I also just do some dust coats initially and let them fully dry before I put down some wet coats.

Great video! The issue is it requires a "retarder" or slow thinner. I work in the screen printing industry (everything from textiles to graphics in the past but all solar, medical device, electronic and industrial now)....we print and/or spray virtually anything that is liquid at one time or another. That was a GREAT spider-webbing demo! Excellent solution!

Silly string issue is similar to what I experience with your ME Air force paints without additional thinning. The resin is partially polymerizing mid air.

I have been using the KBS clear that you reviewed a year or so ago and thinned 50/50 with their thinner and never had any problems. I found if it was sprayed neat it struggled to get through a .5 or .7 needle. Not sure I'd try this Duplicolor though. Worth the test though as you don't know till you give it a go.

Interesting. I have tried some automotive 2K clear gloss, but I'm somewhat wary about the health risks associated with 2K clear gloss (even with using a respirator & spraybooth). I did buy a tin of automotive 1 part acrylic clear gloss (Lecher Acrifan 1K clear) Maybe I need to try some more experiments with the 1K clear.

I have a bunch of guys in my therapy that swear by this along with the paint. However, I haven't had much luck with either. I have found with both, your best bet is to decant it and let it gas out. Then I thin it with our favorite leveling thinner. But honestly, compared to any other lacquer paint out there on the market, I really am not a fan. And it's really to bad. I saw it on the shelf at my local dollar days (dollar style store) and couldn't beat the price. Or could I? 🤔

They're both comparable but the KBS needs it's own special thinner which adds to the cost. I do like the KBS a little but more as it shines better without buffing but these are both pretty close in quality

lacquer is a no no on waterborne/acrylic paint if it has a sheen. The chemicals that give the paint it's sheen will react with the lacquer causing it to bubble/wrinkle. The base coat must be flat.

Also lacquer thinner is powerful stuff and if over done in the thinning process may cause similar issues. I would experiment with ratios of lacquer to thinner and only use the bare minimum of thinner to achieve the desired consistency.

@jasoncombs3232 is correct. Another way to look at it - its an automotive product meant to be used over several layers of paint made by the same company. They are meant to work together. They are also intended to be light-fast and weather resistant. The quick drying time is another clue as to how volatile it is. ... So this NOT a smart product. The correct application of it is dependent on the applicator's ability and willingness to use it in an environment that will allow it finish in the way we want. That includes special lights, controlled temps, air filtering and spray equipment. For the hobbyist - and please take note that this is coming from a real cheap-ass - the savings in the long run would not be worth it to me for having to test it on basically everything. That being said, car guys and people who work mostly with volatile coatings that are meant to reproduce industrial processes any way, will probably love this product because, coming from that end, it IS more of a smart product. Thank you for this demo Robert! You probably saved at least a few cherished decals. You're like the hobby version of that guy in the WW2 movie who throws himself on the barbed wire so the rest of us can get past running over you!
