That tux myth's result is simply one of the best the show ever confirmed. Crisp and expectation defying.
@psychotimo7 ай бұрын
To be fair, I'm guessing it would mostly defy expectation for non-divers. I expected that most of the wrinkles would come from putting on and taking off the drysuit. being a bit careful with that would mean very limited wrinkles. Under water you actually make it a point to move as little as possible and just calmly move your legs a bit so your fins can propel you and occasionally move your arms a bit to check you dive computer and gauges. A diver tries to move as little as possible to conserve as much air as possible, and both a wet and a drysuit will get compressed a bit by water pressure (and the BCD i spose) so stands to reason that it would keep the suit into place and preserve it. not sure how the expectation would be that it would look like crap? it's not like we're doing our interpretative dance routines underwater 0.o (or at least most divers don't xP )
@Fernando-ek8jp7 ай бұрын
@@psychotimoBecause that's still physical exertion done over an extended period of time. A nice suit can look a bit messed up just by laying in bed wearing it.
@psychotimo6 ай бұрын
@@Fernando-ek8jp true, which is why I expected limited wrinkling. But not a whole lot (IF putting on and taking off the drysuit was done carefully). I just wouldn't expect it to look like crap, it's not like you're rolling around on the ground in it. You're taking it underwater where the pressure of the water will actually help keep it in place a bit. Plus, do keep in mind that while diving, you keep the physical exertion to an absolute minimum. Diving in the north sea (in the netherlands) is usually done when the tides turn, cause that way you can use the water flow to literally just position yourself a bit and let the tide move you around. (source, me: I just had a dive there yesterday xP) so given the right timing, Jamie might've just drifted towards the boat while barely moving. If, however, Jamie would've had to go against the tide, then he'd have had to move a lot more to actually get to the boat. But even then almost all of the movement would be fairly mechanical moving of his legs, so it could feasibly add a noticeable amount of wrinkles to the pants (depending on whether the drysuit was effective at keeping it in place or not) .
@Fernando-ek8jp6 ай бұрын
@@psychotimo I understand that done properly it should be minimal exertion, but it's still a prolonged physical activity. Now imagine diving with the extra bulk of a full on tux beneath the diving suit. It is not unreasonable to think it might have been affected.
@psychotimo6 ай бұрын
@@Fernando-ek8jp sure, I understand the point, there's just more nuance to it. such as "the bulk of a tux", a drysuit is made so you can wear insulating clothes underneath. it's literally made to be able to wear bulkier stuff under it. if anything the LACK of bulk on the tux could be more of an issue, providing more room to move around, yet that'd (again) be countered by water pressure. But as I said, it's definitely not unreasonable that it would be affected, I'm not trying to fully discredit your points, cause they do make sense and there is definitely some truth in them. I'm just saying it's more nuanced and knowing what I know about drysuits, I didn't really expect a lot of wrinkling, obvi some minor wrinkles, but not a lot. Plus he prolly didn't go for a full hour of diving and just went straight to the boat, which would limit the amount of time underwater and the odds of further wrinkling.

If you had perfectly still and dark container and decreased temperature of water below freezing point, would it ever actually freeze if no crystallisation by outside source is induced? As far as something being "bulletproof", the immediate question should be: Which bullet? If it's a slow 22 rimfire or a 25 ACP, at a distance of 10 yards, many common objects will likely be "bulletproof". Which type of round was it? How long was the barrel? Did it pass through a suppressor? At what distance was it shot from? In the case of a shotgun, was it a foster slug? Was it buckshot? Was it birdshot? In the case of a 9mm round, for instance, a test should be done with a +P round, and then another test with the slowest round available for purchase. The results can be very different indeed.

Stupid question maybe on the freezing beer: aren't theory 1 and 2 basically the same? The small bubbles forming in theory 1 are the nucleation sites of theory 2... or not?
@kikixchannel7 ай бұрын
Not really. Theory 1 depends on decrease in temperature. As in, the bubbles 'suck up' the heat from the beer around them when they form, cooling it just enough to cause freezing. Theory 2 depends on the liquid already being cold enough for freezing, but at a stable form and not freezing over. But the impact causes the liquid to get destabilized by adding energy into it which results in the sudden freezing. If you want the difference 'shown' in a practical sense...Theory 1 could possibly work only with carbonated drinks, but they had proven that it works with non-carbonated drinks as well. It can be done even if there are no bubbles forming, hence them forming has no impact on the effect.
@gordonbrinkmann7 ай бұрын
@@kikixchannel Oh yeah you're right, I forgot the cooling down part of the first theory. But in classical nucleation theory the heterogenous nucleations are the most common and usually occur on surface imperfections or impurities (which is also where bubbles build) at one if the three phase interfaces, liquid-solid, solid-vapor and liquid-vapor. So while the bubbles might not cause a sudden temperature drop to freeze the beer and it is not necessary to have carbonated drinks, they can definitely be the (or one of the) source of cristallization, which also looks like it in some of the carbonated examples later on when they show several freezing beverages. But of course you're right, since they made the cooling down effect part of the first theory, this is something different than theory 2. Actually I think theory 1 is just something people were guessing what is happening there, while in reality it is of course all nucleation - which is what happens in theory 1 with the help of bubbles if you dismiss the cooling part.

Jamie looks fine after the dive because he used a dry-suit. These are not your standard wet-suit most people would use for scuba diving, with dry suits being designed for extremely cold temperatures. The being completely dry in a tuxedo under a dry suit was the example my dive instructor used back in the 90s (well before this was filmed) so not really surprising when you see what equipment they used.

Remember he’s playing a ‘super spy’ which certainly would have access to top of the line diving equipment.

The one with the instantly freezing beer is a kids science experiment. It's just done with water instead of beer.
