TESTING GOLD JEWELRY AT TRAXNYC

A classic gold test and acid gold testing kit. I took 2 cubans from my store at 64 West 47th street and a 24k gold coin to show you guys how it works. You take each piece and make a long scratch on the test plate from the gold. Hit those lines with a drop or 2 of each liquid solution (10k,14k, and 18k gold). If the solution dissolves the scratch of gold, then it fails the test. Just one of many ways to make sure you can trust the people you shop with in the diamond district. Yes with raw gold but most jewelry is made with reused gold that has been melted down 100s of times and mixed with 100s of different gold from around the world. You can trace the exact mine shaft the gold came from in specimen form.

Often times when handling gold they do collect and save those trace amounts. I’m not sure about the scratch test, since they are using an acid that breaks it down, but maybe they do.

I know the concentration of the nitric acid is what ultimately tells you what carat gold you are dealing with but how can you be sure it's not just plated? Honestly, just experience?

Nitric acid by itself won’t dissolve gold at all. They mix 2 acids and create a weak form of aqua regia

If it's plated the acid will turn green then dissolve the scratch completely. If you're still unsure, you can also dip the gold onto a drop of the solution. the chain will bubble and turn green if it's plated. If you have experience with gold it's easier to identify fake gold and usually you can spot it out before even using the solution. But they do make some really good fakes out there (work at a pawn shop)

The written number is the baseline. If it dissolved 14 but not 18, that means it is between 14-18 karat. These are quick tests, not a detailed assay. Really all you need to do is keep a tiny vial of nitric acid. If it dissolve, not gold.

Nope. I guarantee he can't. Your point about knowing the color of those streaks he made? That was a comment, someone who has barely touched, or seen gold would make. Due to different alloys and tricks etc you can only really start to see real color differences when comparing 10k to 18k. 18k and up starts to look more deep yellow. Some say orangey. I only buy/wear 18 and up, due to purity, color and resell value.

I'm assuming if you knew the exact size & weight of a specific gold bar, you could probably fill the middle with another type of metal or something & then cut in in half & boom you have a centimeter of gold all the way around with a lead or some metal filling the middle? I'm sure someone has done it before so could you somehow scan it to make sure it's solid gold all the way through a gold bar??? or at least using pure gold all the way around at least a centimeter and filling up the middle with like 8k gold? there's no way I'm the first to think about it so there's gotta be a way to know for sure without cutting it in half right?????

There is. The device is show on the channel Codyslab. It shows the purity of any object, I believe down to 3 nines fine. So if something is “pure”, it’d register in at 99.999%.
