I love 300lb. watercolor paper in general so I was anxious to do a painting on the new Hahnemühle Collection 300lb. cold press block. I also decided to get my Zig White Ink 30 a little more involved and add a few finishing touches to my painting. Take a look. This was another fun one!

I'm pretty sure Steve doesn't use brushes creating his artwork. I'm convinced that's actually a magic wand. Or at least, he makes it look like one in his hands. Always amazed at what appears at the end of his videos from a once blank canvas.

I grew up using 140 pound, always disappointed and frustrated by the buckling, now I have the answer, thank you. Makes sense, Opa had no issue with the 140 pound, why he gave me pieces as a boy until graduated to a tablet, he used a dry technique most of the time. I chuckled about painting on the back side, Opa did amazing paintings on either side and drove Oma crazy as then she didn't know which side to frame. Ha.

I've recently finished watching all your landscape playlist, and all your trees playlist... so... *lots* of videos ; ) and in the past year I've watched _many_ other watercolor videos on youtube, but your content stands out not only for the art aspect (beautiful art), but also by how well you capture the process: from the quality of the image (lighting and camera positioning) to the editing, to the music and the commentary, which is great both in audio quality and actual content... always very informative, without sounding too academic; it is encouraging and relaxing. At times it reminds me of Bob Ross, which I know you'll understand to be high praise, but always with your own personality showing through. Your videos are friendly and relatable, and as beautifully crafted as your paintings. Thank you for taking so much care to share your knowledge and art : )

After watching your video, I had to buy the paper. Meanwhile I had time to test and compare. For my technique with use of much water, the Hahnemuehle has now become my favorite. Even with the 140 lb paper there is not much buckling, and it becomes flat again after drying. The tape doesn't rip/ damage the paper at all (problem with other Hahnemuehle papers in the past), and the block is glued just perfectly. Although it is pretty expensive even in Germany, I will buy more of this paper - I couldn't find anything bad about it up to now. Just fun to.paint on it.

If you can get your hands on it, I can also recommend the sketch paper from this collection. It's much thinner but also made of 100% cotton and much more affordable - I found it a joy to use in watercolor sketchbooks. It buckled but kind of predictably if that makes sense and once dry it's completely flat for me again.

WOW!! You stated you started out with no particular idea what you were going to paint. Not too bad for something on the fly. Really beautiful to look at and I almost immediately wondered where I could hang it here in the house. I have never tried Hahnemuhle papers of any weight. In fact, I have yet to see any for sale at any of the local art supply stores. Matter of fact, I have yet to see the white ink you used. Maybe I need to get out more and browse all the local art stores. I continue to watch my way through everything I can find on KZbin. YES! I used to do that in my illustration days too. It was a common illustrator's technique. Gessoed paper provides an absolutely wonderful surface tooth. I hate canvas texture and it's usually not too friendly to scanners either. Hi res scanning used to require wrapping the work around a drum. If the work is rigid (like canvas or panels) it had to be photographed on film back in the day. We have more quality options today thankfully

@@BrendasArt Well I have used many kinds out there. I found the agave paper workable but some specific techniques were a bit different. It’s a little hard to explain when you get used to a certain kind. No complaint on the sizing and I think that most would probably not notice a difference. I did with the amount of time to be able to charge the wash but it is very do able. I like Saunders Waterford, Arches, Lanaquarelle and the Cezanne most though. It would be nice to have our supplies earth friendly but even in the brush area artificial, nylon bristles are like plastic and well sable is the tail of a weasel so it definitely is a personal decision. Take care. It does work great with my colored pencils too

Watching this video, automatically, has caused me to become a subscriber. You definitely have the 3rd eye. I love the magical touch and the way you transformed that canvas from a caterpillar into a butterfly within a minimal amount of time, and appreciated the fact that you did not use border tape. I know that border taping seems to be the trend in visual art, but for the sake of freedom, it's good to remember that it's okay 'not' to use it. Also, I was searching for the "best" art paper, and I'm definitely going to try 'this,' or 'these' brands you've presented in this video. But what brand of watercolor paint did you use? Love it. @mindofwatercolor

They are snappy and just do what I want them to do. Not really any more to it than that. To be clear though, there are lots of really good brushes out there. The Aqua Elite is Princeton's top of the line watercolor brush and its a worthy synthetic contender that I've become familiar with. I try new brushes all the time. I tend to notice poor performers more than identifying standout great ones. Kolinsky sable continues to be a standout performer but they are hard to get now and the trend is towards full synthetics.

The white ink was a great idea. I had thought it might have a bluish tinge but I didn’t notice any difference in your “sky holes”. Pastelists call them that. It makes sense. I will have to give it a try. Right now I only have black ink for a dip pen. The painting looked like a winter scene I suppose more white ink in front would give it the frosty appearance. Have you tried the agave paper? I thought it was ok for watercolor, which surprised me but still not quite Arches or Lanaquarelle. Some really might enjoy it though. I know you usually do landscapes with the spontaneous technique but I wonder if it could be used for loose florals?

Yes it can. Like landscape it requires some familiarity with the shapes and colors of various flowers in order to see them and pull them out of the spontaneous strokes.

I think using ink is a good idea. Haven't tried it yet only gouache. Can ph. Martin's watercolor or India inks be substituted? What specifically do you recommend? Good video!

Steve, a question for you. Do you do share this technique on your Patreon in a slower pace/longer video/tutorial? And if so, I guess it's the 8 dollar subscription, right?

Sometimes I do. For this one, I plan to do, for Patreon, a separate study, with commentary, of just the white highlights through the trees part. Yes, $8 is the support level that gets you all the perks. It's not a subscription service though. It's a voluntary support avenue for the content on this channel. The extra content I make on Patreon is just a perk and a thank you.

Hi Steve, Is white ink more opaque than white gouache?

Most white inks are less opaque, but this one is about the same as gouache
