The "They sleepy" is really cool but should also half their speed, cause idk who just about to fall asleep runs 30 feet before passing out. New meta- When you are about to fall asleep from sleep, run 30 feet to a tree and climb it so you fall and take a bit of falling damage and wake back up.

this is literally what i was thinking, it reminded me of the sleep effect in monster hunter where you can walk around kinda drouzy, not being able to attack, so you would either be sipping an energy drink if you could select and use one in time, or walk over to the next ledge so than when you fall forward, you fall off and wake up

If it takes me an hour to fall asleep naturally, there is no way i fall asleep in 6 seconds to some magical words. I do like the idea it makes you super drowsy and you can assume "if you are in combat- that round of movement might let them run away to alert someone BUT- if you cast it secretly, they aren't aware of any danger so why would they suddenly run when they feel tired?" it gives a great way of making it work different in combat and outside of combat.

Its decently backwards compatible if you use the logic/guidance given by them. Anything that's printed in 2024 PHB and DMG replaces the old subclasses, classes, spells and items. Anything that isnt reprinted, you can port over. So any items, spells, subclasses (like old ones from PHB, XTE or TCoE) feel free. Same with monster stat blocks. If you wanna use an old species (race) just don't take your ability score increase from the bg and you're set.

I've never ran or read a pre-written adventure before but I knew that I wanted to run the lost mines of phandelver for my 8 and 9 year old nephews who have never played D&D before. And I'm getting them started with the new 2024 books that I bought specifically so I could play it with them rather than having to juggle between 50 odd side books like Tasha's 2014 players handbook xanathars etc. I heard the 2024 books are apparently easier for beginners, and since they are such young children I figured it would be best if I use them along with a quest that people said is great for beginners as well if I gave them like a level 5 wizard mentor that has divination and mostly non-combative spells to allow them to still shine. I know the video just came out an hour ago and I'm only about 10 minutes into it but man am I excited and already so amped to "Not illegally rip this PDF" and run it for my nephews. They just got their dice from kracken dice and are super excited to give it a go whenever I finally figure out how to properly read and run pre-written games haha. I think dnd 5e rules being flexible is just a myth from just how much the community ignores the rules and just how much homebrew there is for 5e which comes from the monopoly 5e holds in TTRPGs not because 5e is modular. I know so many 5e players who have never bothered reading the rules section of the PHB and it shows.
@Awsomeman32817 күн бұрын
My opinion of 5E 2014 vs. 2024 is that the main decision is mostly about playing when you are playing with brand new play groups, meaning either strangers you've never met before &/or players brand new to the game. Basically, in order to make sure everyone in the play group is on the same page for what all of the rules are, it is important to pick one set of rules and not have a bunch of homebrew rules that everyone has to learn on top of them. After that though, once you are playing with an established play group, that is when the opportunity of mixing, altering, changing, and adding rules to your groups' games comes into play, whether you combine the aspects of what you like from both versions or have some player characters be built in 2014 while others used 2024; Like many have said, including Jacob early in this vid, 5E is so customizable and malleable to accommodate so much creativity and tinkering from the players and able to be resilient enough to not break under that, that you really can just decide that the rules for your guys' games are whatever rules you all agree and decide upon to play with. The most important part of all of that being everyone understanding and agreeing ahead of time what the full set of rules and expectations are at session 0, so as to not "make up" rules in the middle of play, or at least seeming to make up rules while playing. 1:33:12 Idk about y'all, but I'm looking forward to them possibly Dungeon Delving into Mutants and Masterminds as a TTRPG System. I have no basis to think that they would, I'm just shooting my shot at hoping Jacob sees this and tries it out!

@@landanross2966 They do seem to have made the spell smites better. And Lay on Hands being a bonus action (which every Paladin player I've ever run for always _thinks_ it is anyways) is pretty crazy good. And Divine favor was always good, except for the concentration and the fact it eats into smite slots which meant no one used it. It not being concentration is great, the fact it still competes with smites for slots and bonus actions is still not great. But that nerf is huge. It means that not only can your smites be counter spelled, you cannot use nearly as many of them for your attacks. It's a huge difference in a Paladin's roll as damage dealer, and it still doesn't really address the fact that half the time they won't use their spells because they want to be smiting, and getting one free smite per day and a free horse (which was already free anyways the spell being a ritual and all) don't really square with that change. (Why can they smite with thrown weapons now? Divine Smite still has the melee weapon requirement, no?) Those other changes are tops, and you're right they do make the class better. Not a single Paladin player I've asked about it wants to take that trade though. (I'm probably going to incorporate the changes going forwards myself, and just not make smite a spell. I'd almost rather it wasn't tied to spell slots at all, and couldn't be upcast but was also just it's own thing except for the spell smites.)

The end i think summarizes it pretty good what is the 2024 D&D: many little changes that ends up creating new small but game-changing opportunities to do things differently, that in the whole picture makes the game more dynamic. Unfortunately, sometimes they didn't know how to properly tie these decisions with the flavor and intent of the classes, subclasses and rules in general, which is a bummer. But all in all, it is probably pretty possible to adjust some details to the taste of each table and make it playing 2024's D&D to be an amazing experience. Really excited for Dungeon Delve in 2025! Happy new year!

23:19 I kind of assume that incapacitated means that you're cognizant to stumble around but too out of it to do anything more, like if you were concussed or black-out drunk. A lot of other conditions or abilities have the incapacitated included in but add on more restrictions and effects, in the same way that the charmed condition is handled.

Dungeon delving is some of the greatest content I've seen in a while, not just out of your channel but from DND KZbin creators overall. I can't wait to see more!

This is the best fucking series!!!! Edit: I also thought that Backwards compatibility meant that you could play with a mix of both rulesets, so in my games I've been playing with both and just being really clear with my players which versions or changes to rules we're using. Also, I enjoy the ability to have characters be able to take the same spells but maybe the wizard has the spell from the 2014 rules and the druid has the spell from 2024 because it gives more reasons for the classes being raised differently on how magic works, and I think it adds more depth in magical world building. 😊
@hawkname123415 күн бұрын
No. The characters are backwards compatible. But if you play with any 2024 characters, you are supposed to use the 2024 rules as a base. They specifically say it's not a good idea to try to run 2024 characters with the 2014 rules.

Finally tackling the real questions. Always here for the devotion, but it's interesting to see how the new rules measure up. I honestly just take the neat stuff from 2024 and add them to 5e. I'll be staying on 5e for a while, I just started with it 5 years ago and played two sessions!

I absolutely love the dungeon delve videos and I hope to see more in the new year!! I've so far really enjoyed dnd 2024, and I'm so so happy to see a video showing how it's actually used in game! I'm in the same boat in that some of the changes don't 100% vibe with me, but overall it seems just fine, and even though I'm a forever DM i'm hoping to play around with the new character changes. Also excited to see what the new monster manual brings!!!

The ranger on paper vs actually playing one is a completely different. I played a 2024 ranger at 9th level. The damage output is insane as a dual welder. And having the much Improved conjure barriage in my back pocket is extremely helpful. And the 2024 ranger is the Tasha ranger but improved.
@landanross29667 күн бұрын
Mathematically, the Ranger does just as well if not better than every other martial classes right up until level 11, because most of the other martial classes have a feature that scales their damage at level 11 and Ranger doesn’t, and that’s where Ranger falls behind. But most DnD most of us play happens before level 11 so actual play Ranger is gonna feel perfectly fine
@adamg00137 күн бұрын
@landanross2966 I'm starting to take a deep look into high level ranger play.. they aren't falling behind. Everyone just finally caught up. What rangers do in the high levels is marry single target damage and aoe burst.

In my head the Incapacitated round of the Sleep spell is drowsy stumbling, like when you get up in the middle of the night to pee and you can't really think but you can kinda move
@Bigryguy95-epic13 күн бұрын
Exactly! Also kind of like in shows and movies when a character has been drugged and they are dizzy but can still process what’s happening and move a little bit before falling over.

On the incapacitated thing: The condition is unchanged from 2014. Movement was always allowed while incapacitated, so long as it’s not also paired with a condition that makes movement 0. You can see the same effect from a player action/spell in the likes of Rathulim’s Psychic Lance from Fizban’s, which doesn’t affect speed and Hypnotic Pattern, which explicitly incapacitates and sets your speed to 0.

yeah for the sleep spell i read it how the move yawn works in pokemon. you cast the spell and they get incredibly drowsy and are half asleep dozing in and out of sleep until they eventually (fail the second check) fall asleep
@Arkios6417 күн бұрын
Exactly. The spell isn't "Coma", but "Sleep", after all; people take a bit of time to fully fall asleep, no matter how tired. They have enough mental faculty left to find a nice spot to lay down, but nothing more.

Hey, just wanted to drop by and say I devoured the 3 dungeon delve ep during the holidays and it made me want to run a game again. I've been in a DnD slump since one of my friend, who was also part of my campaign, died suddenly last year, so thank you. And also keep it up pretty please, it's really fun to watch, with the players doing the little side-chart stuff.

As someone who’s starting to consider DM’ing again/ playing D&D in general for the first time in over a year, I absolutely love this series I understand it’s a lot of work to film and edit these videos but I think it’s incredibly worth it ❤️

Might mainly be that I'm significantly more experienced with the 2014 version and that I haven't done enough of 24 yet, but I'm mostly at the point of sticking to the old rules as the base and moving in a few of the newer ones rather than vice versa. I'm really glad that you brought up 5e (both versions) being super flexible for expanding with both major and minor homebrew being able to feel mechanically meaningful without being overly hard to track or balance. I really love these videos, and while I'm perfectly happy watching unedited games, the discussion you do parallel to it are nice for reflecting about the games you play

I really enjoy how in the new phb and dmg they describe things more intuitively or in easier to understand ways. I love how when you knock out a creature they start a short rest. It adds a timer to them receiving healing. I also love how they changed exhaustion from the table to a more direct type of scaling with each level. Also, I love your content, you and everyone you work with does such a great job. I really enjoyed the little mini interview snippets with each player when something big happened. (this is also my first time watching a Dungeon Delve so if that is normal y'know keep it up.)
@ez_theta_z931714 күн бұрын
yeah the new exhaustion is just so much better done than '14 exhaustion. i think i did prefer the playtest rules where it had 10 levels and reduced rolls by 1 per, rather than the new one which has 6 levels and reduces by 2 per, but eh. still good.
