Also worked at GameStop shortly after the GBA era (Wii was the current system) and we took in fakes all the time. They would get SKU'd the same as normal copies cause like you said your average person just doesn't know any better, and to be honest back then neither did we for the most part. It wasn't until we sent them to other locations that they'd get pointed out a lot of the time.

Really? Is asking minimum wage workers to handle boiling grease fat for dipping fries any less? It's not that hard. They have the tools. People in the hobby learn while not getting paid. It's a job. There are certain things you have to know to do that job. I think where GameStop would really benefit is training employees how to handle a lot of shoppers. High stress situations result in errors. Some shoppers are not that considerate. This is where the focus should be. Treating customers well in these situations will help retain customers. It will also lead to less fakes getting accepted. More employees working the counter would also help, but that takes from the bottom line.
@346Yoman2 ай бұрын
@@WhatsOnMyShelfyes it is less. Handling oil that's costs .50$ a gallon with a disposable employee vs handling the logistics of a business and not losing thousands over a singular game that could only be worth 5$. @@346Yoman Boiling oil. Insurance? What exactly are the dangers of handling a Wii U disc? They are quite slippery. People have responsibilities with jobs. Authenticating games is part of the job. I notice a lot of people in the comments sound like they don't expect any responsibility.

Pretty much what I thought would happen, it just depends on the store, some clerks are more knowledgeable, some of their bosses care a bit more and inform their employees, and sometimes employees just either don't know, don't care because they're understaffed and/or underpaid, or both. I've already heard quite a few (admittedly anecdotal, so I can't say for certain if they're true) stories of people finding counterfeit games at GS Retro locations, so seeing them not be able to spot all the fakes doesn't surprise me, but hey at least they caught some of them, and props to that last guy, that's always cool to see.

Speaking as a former GameStop employee as of late last year...they don't give two fucks about fakes. All they care about is if your barcode scans on a case, or of your disc's are scratched. They don't even test games on the spot to see if they work, they just buy them and send them to "the warehouse" to figure it out with no case. So if you can get your barcodes right on fake cases, you can make a mint 💯 OH and selling memberships. That's their MAIN priority.
@WhatsOnMyShelf3 ай бұрын
Once traded in and identified as fakes, were there repercussions for that customer who traded in the fakes? I don't know if there was a way to trace this, but I doubt it. It's probably why the trade in values for retro dropped so dramatically at GameStop. Take in as much as possible and hope that the majority are not fakes.

At this point if i walk into another location and doing get greeted, it's kind of jarring lol It does suck to see not everyone has had enough experience for things to be more consistent at different locations though. I'm a Gamestop Employee who just likes collecting retro and have tried training my co-workers on how to identify these things because I personally believe the trainings that were given out by Gamestop were very basic and don't cover the many different ways to identify fakes and only went over like, looking at the screws or making sure the label looked right, nothing about the serial number or Nintendo fonts or looking at the board or with GBA, looking for the numbered stamp. I believe it's a lot to ask of every employee to know the in's and out's of identifying fakes, but if you just learn a couple tricks, it'll filter out 90% of fakes that come in. The stamp trick on the GBA is my personal favorite because I feel like it's hard for fakes to do right. PS. Also if any fakes come into the store, I see to it that it stays in the store and acts as an example of a fake and label multiple reasons as to why that cart is fake.

On the topic of "Do casual gamers mind if a game is fake or not if it works the same?" my thoughts are that if a customer pays for a product they deserve that product. Nothing more, nothing less. A $2000 hand bag will still hold the same stuff as a $50 fake but the price is in the quality assurance and brand reputation. If youre just paying for a bag to hold stuff then the price should reflect that rather than being a reflection of the high quality original. Some buyers wont know the difference or care but ethically, yes, if youre selling a product for the price of an authentic original, the buyer deserves that authentic original. Nothing more, nothing less

If I was a GameStop employee and I identified one of the 4 as fake, I would just stop the trade at that point due to the risk involved. If the customer didn't know they had a fake, its safer to assume their poor judgement/lack of knowledge spread to more than just that one title and they have multiple fakes. Plus, I don't think GameStop is well equipped enough to deal with Retro. The local retro GameStop near me took in games that were clearly water damaged and were treating it the same as a clean copy cause they only have one SKU per title in the system. And in the past when they were doing retro online only they were constantly sending out fakes to people. I think the best move for gamers is to just support local mom and pop shops. They can better train their employees as they don't have hundreds of employees and only have to worry about what comes in their door, and not every store across the country like GameStop does. It only takes one employee at one GameStop either not caring or not knowing to flood the system with with fakes from a massive trade-in.

I was in Goodwill one day when I saw a couple PS2 games mixed in with the DVDs. I forget now what they were, but right off the bat, the case artwork looked like the colors weren't 100% aligned properly. The same was true of the Disc printing. It was printed on the disc itself, rather than being a label attached to the disc, but there was no way it was a factory original. I took them up to the counter and told the cashier that they were fake. She said thanks and tossed them in a trash can under the counter. I didn't see them the following week, so I don't know if they really threw them out, or if they just got sold to an unsuspecting buyer before I went back. I could understand if someone ended up with just the disc of a game and printed their own label for the case, but the disc was clearly fake as well. Not that I'm an expert on fake games. I've never even owned a Nintendo console. I never even owned any disc-based consoles when they were current.

Great video, I enjoyed this one. I had to teach myself to check if games are fakes. It actually took some time and research.

They have to start taking retro games. Everything is going digital and their shelves would be empty otherwise. Now they have to train the staff for what to look for.

I had a local pawn shop in Australia trying to sell a copy of diamond that was bootleg with the sd card and everything, i had to tell them its fake 2 different visits before they took it off the shelf

Id be interested to know the actual positions (job title) or tenure of the gamestop employees you had checking the games. I know thats hard to figure out, or even put in the video as to not out who the employees are but I would bet managers would be more intelligent to the fakes than a part time employee. Cool video though!!

Great question! Thanks for watching 🙂

This is usually the case! However, I've met managers who only play one franchise or aren't big gamers (which was really surprising!), with teams who are huge retro nerds and do a lot of carrying in terms of sharing knowledge and community building.

Didn't know about the transparency on the HeartGold/SoulSilver games! While watching this, I pulled out my SoulSilver to check it. It's legit! Very cool video!!!

Bootlegs are one thing, but I don't think I'd take any of my games in just because of how poor those trade-in values are. According to what they're charging for them on the website, that's like a 300% markup from what they're offering. Might be why they're so loose with checking these things.

Helped my local GS a week ago to spot a fake Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, Metroid fusion and minish cap, Sucks that these fakes/repros are going into circulation but thankfully the employee instantly marked them so they wouldn't be sold 👍

I personally don't care if a game is fake as long as it works. Now, If I was sold a fake game for the same price as an authentic I would be pissed.

Saying the GameStop Retro has only been out a few weeks, so it may progress over time is just overlooking the fact that GameStop has been taking in Retro since 2016, and should have the training down... GameStop Retro is just a rebranding of certain stores.

I remember back in like 2021 or 2022 Phoenix Resale bought like 10 copies of HeartGold and SoulSilver from GameStop and a lot of them were fakes. It’s a small sample size, but sounds like they’ve had more training since then which is great to hear. I’ve personally picked up 2 copies of SoulSilver from GameStop over the past few years and both were authentic thankfully. Although another time I bought Luigi’s Mansion 3DS (the GameCube remaster) and they sent me Dark Moon instead 😅😂

I don't mind getting reproductions of translated titles, that are well made. I have bought a copy of Harvest Moon for the SNES that was pretty cheap that is a reproduction, it's pretty easily identifiable that it's a repro. At the time I just wanted to use original hardware and couldn't drop $400 on the cartridge. It's the only repro I have that had a localized release. I got a FX Pak Pro and use that now while I slowly track down and purchase those expensive carts to complete my personal SNES collection. But I do gotta admit it's so tempting to get near indistinguishable from the real deal fakes for like $10-15 instead of spending $400 on the real one. lol

Mine couldn't til I got there, we had 6 copies of Heart Gold or Soul Silver with grey carts.

The employee at 6 mins should be fired for telling you to take money elsewhere. Wow. That is NOT another location. They were stuttering and saying "no, no sorry, not after all I found". So they just refused service?! The first two locations seemed nice. The third though..... fire that one employee.

Well another KZbinr swears GameStop is checking their games but I think they want a sponsorship. Props to the last guy, he’s legit.
