See Our Flex Fused Core™ IIIA Soft Armor pushed to the limit in this Body Armor 101 segment. Rob Orgel of ER Tactical tests various calibers including 9mm, .357 MAG, .45 ACP and .44 MAG at point blank range (3 feet). We use clay as a visual to demonstrate blunt force trauma, but note that actual human tissue behaves slightly different. This video will help you understand what to expect if your body armor takes an impact for very close distance. While taking a round at such a close distance is going to do some damage, it is a survivable ordeal when wearing quality body armor such as our Flex Fused Core™ IIIA Soft Armor.

Any reason why you wouldn't just go to using UHMWPE vs Aramid/Kevlar? That backface seems pretty excessive from the 44 mag.

Hey Buffman, good to hear from you. Soft armor is still the preferred option for extended duty use (i.e. law enforcement) because it's flexible and easier to move in. They wear their soft IIIA vests most of the day and will throw on a carrier with hard plates should there be an active threat. Note that the clay deformations shown in this video are out in the desert around 90 degrees and at point blank distance, that clay never stood a chance. NIJ testing is done indoors with an ambient temp of around 68 degrees which also makes the clay much more firm. We'd rather show everyone worst case scenario so they have a real understanding of what to expect if they get shot while wearing body armor. Many other companies will dump mag after mag into a vest without ever showing the real world implications. Note that most bad guys also aren't walking the streets with a .44 MAG 🍻

@@SpartanArmorSystems I guess it would help to tell us the clay you're using? Is it Roma Plastilina No 1 Ballistic? If so per the NIJ testing that clay is heated to 98-103F to get the proper certification. My mention of UHMWPE would be in a non pressed form so "flexible". I'm guessing Kevlar/Aramid has it's advantages but in all of my testing even flexible UHWMPE has been shown to be superior to most Aramid/Kelvar setups. I'm guessing you've done the NIJ testing on the IIIA, so I'm sure the 44mm is just showing it's raw power here :D

Can we get a follow up to this but with trauma pads? How does the BFD change with the pads?

Yes, we will have a video on that in the not too distant future.

Will these fit behind level 3 ceramic plates

It really depends on what your plate carrier will allow. These IIIA panels are only .35" thick so they should most likely fit.

What about 9mm fmj? Just curious what the clay would look like vs hollow point.
@SpartanArmorSystems
@SpartanArmorSystems Ай бұрын
@Frank-it9kl no issues with the 9mm fmj. Back Face Deformation averages around 40mm. We have a new ballistic test range coming online this summer and will add the hollow point to the testing list. Thanks for your interest.
