Can a real bulletproof suit straight out of the John Wick-iverse actually stop bullets before they get to your body? Kyle heads to where they trained Keanu Reeves himself to find out.

*Thanks for watching!* Quick note for all the gun-thusiasts. I said "assault rifle" but what we actually fired is an ArmaLite. Also, being IIIA+ rated, there was no way my armor was going to stop a rifle round. My objective was to show the extremes (no armor vs ineffective armor) with the handgun testing in between to show the differences in energy adsorption etc. for this specific tactic.

My assumption for why John held the suit out like that was to protect his unarmored face, not necessarily to minimize the impact to his body, though that probably would be a nice bonus. Also, pretty much anyone John engages while in the suit is using either a high caliber handgun or a sub-machine gun. The baddies in John Wick are hitmen, not soldiers, so not many of them carry armor piercing rifles unless they have a very specific reason.
@thomasp506
@thomasp506 Жыл бұрын
I think if the armour is soft and flexible, then having it away from your body could actually make it less effective unless you make sure it stays taut. If its just hanging and flapping loosely, it it's liable to be pushed aside by a bullet coming in at the right angle. Having it against your body would be more reliable, but as you said Wick was doing this to protect his head, not to make his armour more effective. If it's plate armour, then it doesn't really matter where you hold it since the plate itself is rigid.
@high633
@high633 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasp506 without testing it would be hard to say it would or wouldn't be pushed out the way. But my thought would be the bullet would have to come in near perpendicular to the soft armour to 'push it away'. But at that point your not talking about the bullet hitting the armour in the sense most would think. But more glancing off of it. Either way all it would take(in my opnion/thought) for the soft armour to stop the bullet. Is for it to physically catch/hold the bullet before the soft armour has the ability to be pushed out the way. Even if the bullet hasn't stopped moving in the horizontal axis as long as the soft armour has a grab on the bullet it shouldn't be able to flop the fabric out the way before it runs out of energy. Cause every bit of movement of that fabric is taking a considerable amount of energy from the bullet.
@thomasp506
@thomasp506 Жыл бұрын
@@high633 I dunno. Sounds to me that, as the bullet skims along the fabric, it gets redirected into your thigh or something. As the fabric starts to move, the bullet alters its course as well. It won't continue straight, but I don't think loose lightweight fabric would be able to stop the bullet completely. I think it would be pretty similar to getting hit by a ricochet.
@high633
@high633 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasp506 as i said at a extreme angle id would probably glance off and hit you. But soft ballistic materiel does a pretty good job of grabbing onto projectiles. So i don't see it hitting it and deflecting the fabric and continuing on. Not only cause of the sheer energy loss having to move that mass of fabric. But also cause the fabric would hold onto the bullet. Now something like in john wick 2 where the bullet proof panel is more of like a rubber matt than a stack of fabric. Id be more inclined to believe your thought as that material doesn't grab the bullet like we are used to knowing/seeing it seemed to more cold stop it. So it just sat on the surface of the panel.

Really depends on how much it can catch the shot and why its flexible - if its one of those materials that reacts to high energy impacts by turning more solid as part of dealing with the impact or has very hard outer layers it may well get pushed aside or deflect the shot, though that isn't what the suit appears like. On the other hand if it is just flexible hard to penetrate fibres then the armour will ripple as its folds around the bullet, almost certainly catching the bullet in the process while turning the entire flexible armour sheet into its own personal drag source, all that air to displace. In which case it may well not push the armour aside much and certainly won't be deflecting the shot.

Hey Kyle. Great video! I do have to correct you on your use of the term "high caliber". The term "Caliber" is used to refer to the diameter of the bullet. In this video, you had referred to the AR as a high caliber, compared to the handgun. The typical AR-15 fires a .223 caliber (5.56mm) projectile, and the AR-10 fires a .308 caliber (7.62mm) projectile. The handgun used in the video fires a 9mm projectile, which is equivalent to .380 caliber. So in regards to "caliber", the diameter of the bullet, the 9mm handgun is a higher caliber. Granted, the AR rifle does have a smaller caliber projectile, but it has a much higher velocity (over 3,200 fps for .223 and between 2,500-2,800 fps for .308) compared to the typical 9mm handgun (around 1,200 fps). Higher velocity projects do a much better job at armor penetration, which is one of the main selling points of the specialized round, 5.7mm, which is commonly used in the FN 5.7 handgun, as well as the FN P90, which has a velocity of 2,350 fps

Hey Kyle, fun fact: Body armour that uses a metal plate is becoming increasingly unpopular as a result of how the bullet splays out when impacting the plate. It's generally acknowledged nowadays that there is a chance that fragments of the bullet can spray into softer areas of the body, such as your legs, chin, or neck. The contemporary norm for hard body armor is ceramic given that it's brittleness can catch the bullet better.
@Ephem13
@Ephem13 Жыл бұрын
This idea is a bit misleading. Both steel and ceramic armor will cause spalling. You need a coating that can catch the bullet fragments. For reference, I don't know of any ceramic armors that are uncoated. Oddly, the plate is too prone to cracking under normal use without it. Some people still make uncoated steel armor because some plate carriers also work as a spalling catch. Some plate carriers are level IIIA without a plate.

Really cool seeing Clover Valley Thor in the same place a couple of my favorite guntubers have been. It's almost the crossover I never knew I wanted! I don't have the slightest clue what relevance could be shared, but to see Kyle working with James Reeves of TFBTV would be awesome. On a side note, just wanted to point out that the 5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington cartridges used in a vast majority of AR platforms, while easily more powerful than almost any (but not all) handgun cartridges (roughly 3 times the energy of the 9mm in the video), it's not even close to what is classified as a full-powered rifle round. In fact it's classified as an intermediate cartridge, and is towards the lower end of said classification. A .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm NATO is almost 3 times as powerful as the 5.56, and it too is towards the lower end of full power cartridges. Defeating body armor is best accomplished with small diameter, high velocity. This is why you see 5.7 and 4.6mm cartridges being adopted by militaries and police swat teams. The flipside of the armor piercing coin is that they do comparatively little damage to soft tissue, such as unarmored targets or once through armor. And make no mistake, the trauma one can receive from even projectiles defeated by armor, especially soft armors, can still easily be lethal, and extremely often incapacitating. If someone wearing body armor, even hard, is shot with full power rifle cartridges or shotgun shells, it WILL hurt, and very likely knock said person down, which then makes them easy targets for shots to unarmored areas, or follow up shots that will quickly compromise and defeat the armor. P.S. I loved the almost "(because) Science!"

A test often done by guntubers and armor manufacturers is using a clay block as simulated tissue, to record the deformation of the blunt force the bullet imparts, even through the armor. Two layers won't be enough to slow the round down significantly enough to catch it. That said, it will somewhat depend on the type of ammo used. A fragmenting 55gr round will be stopped by fewer layers than a 62gr with a steel penetrator - not that a mere two layers will be useful against either.
@JWY1993
@JWY1993 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. You could theoretically stack enough layers, but the suit would be so bulky that it would defeat the purpose of being incognito. Generally, ceramic plates are used for stopping rifle fire. Rifle rounds are much stronger than pistol rounds. This is because rifle rounds are going supersonic, but pistol rounds are generally sub-sonic. F=M × (A^2). So, if you double the mass, you double the force. If you double the speed, you quadruple it.

As Arthur mentioned, trying to stop a rifle bullet would be mostly pointless using soft armor. They have so much more energy. You'll be in for a bad time unless the force is spread out over a larger area.

It makes alot of sense hholding the fabric out would help. Another channel hehre on KZbin did some testing on using trees for cover and determined that standing between 1-2 feet away from the tree that you are using is better then leaning against the tree for all but the lagest calibers. Even a .50 cal was significantly effected by a moderately sized tree trunk (1-2 ft in dia).

So honestly having standoff distance is great for armor, some aired vehicles and tanks use spaced armor to disperse the energy of projectiles between armored plates... The issue is having airgaps requires a lot of *space* (unsurprisingly) which results in a lot of bulk, and for personal armor that's a big problem. I honestly was thinking that hitting a loosely hanging armor plate might allow the bullet to roll around the edge by pushing the armor out of the way and still hit the person with very lethal energy. However, this would be a fantastic tactic against highly energetic rounds with lower penetration but lethal blackface deformation on soft armor (like shotgun slugs and magnum pistol rounds). This was honestly super cool to watch cause this is a very niche use of armor, and legit makes an armored cloak seem like a really cool idea.

@Smokeyninja So, that basically makes the second part of the test invalid. You aren't going to get usable results using derated armor for the application. The argument can be made that 4 or 4A armor is too heavy or bulky for what we see. However, we don't even get to that question because you didn't properly test the base parameter.

The principle for holding the vest outwards makes some sense, 9mm bullets are relativity low velocity, there for the area of effect is higher so the vest being free to swing will actually increase the distance of deceleration of the bullet, increasing the vests effectiveness. There was one major oversight. Ankering the soft armor away from your body (depending on where you hit in relation to the anker) could actually end up redirecting the projectile and in john wicks scenario, cause the bullet to travel along the armor and hit in the lower torso/stomach area. This however can be delt with by increasing the overall weight of the target are with e.g. a tungsten lining along the back of the armor to a point where the gravitational force is equal or greater than the force that is transferred by the the bullet into the armor. It would also end up helping the rigidity of the armor decrease the amout of deformation seen on the soft armor. Bear in mind that with higher velocity rounds like 223. It would most likely increase the chance of penetration.
@AlitaGunm99
@AlitaGunm99 Жыл бұрын
I would have thought to too, but notice the one 9mm shot right at the edge of the armor; it was completely stopped right where it hit, and didn't slide or deflect.
@dr.remerb8011
@dr.remerb8011 Жыл бұрын
@@AlitaGunm99 that's because a huge chunk of energy was actually absorbed by the hard surface (steel-target) as the armor made contact with the stand. Soft body armor like Kevlar actually doesn't really "stop" bullets (in its track) as much as it hinders the projectile from cutting a surface. If you were to shoot a square of Kevlar a 9mm would throw it back quite the distance and you wouldn't see that much deformation of the slug. So if ther wastn a hard surface removing energy from the projectile more energy would need to be stopped by the armor and in that case slipping out the side would probably be the path of least resistance.

bought a really fancy suit when i was consulting extra snobby people (worked wonders btw) and was wondering why it was so heavy that i had a hard time moving before tailoring The entire suit was level 3 (armpits, front of elbows and back of knees were 3A when fully stretched to make it easier to move) with inserts to make the torso level 4 being available for ~$1200 iirc (which i did buy, thinking they were for keeping it straight in storage)

I can't say for sure but i think it and my manners were the determining factors in getting some contracts and besides, who'd wear out a kevlar suit? It still looks brand new today, 7 years later.

I remember when halo 5 trailer came out, chief was wearing a cloak. Someone inferred that it may be a ballistic curtain which in some ways is better than about right against your body. The curtain has more deformation and area to transfer the kinetic energy of the bullet to potentially some cloth being pushed around. This reminds me of the curtains we use to catch missed arrows at my archery range, when practicing outside. I think if you were to pull a piece of fabric taut, an arrow from a typical recurve bow would damage it quite a bit, and a compound bow arrow would probably go straight through. But because it's hanging freely, it moves when the arrow strikes it, which allows more contact for longer, thus slowing the arrow down a lot more. It's not a normal curtain, but it's not using any particularly special materials. And yet I've never seen it sustain any significant damage from being struck by an arrow. In effect, this is just the principle at work that if you don't want to break, you sometimes have to bend. And I guess that has some effect even on bullets.
