@@IDoABitOfTrollin Oled is prettygood, but it still only displays some level of grey, no panel on earth will ever display true black even when powered off and covered in carbon nanotubes to block photon reflection, the best we can possibly achieve is some arbitrary level of grey, which is why screens keep getting brighter in response to people's demand for greater dynamic range, since we can't reflect less light, but we can produce more, and even then it will eventually become headache inducing and potentially damaging to look at it.

a full room of that wouldn't be the best use for it: what would be truly amazing would be a room with just the walls and ceiling that black. The floor and furniture is normal, but then you just have the void for walls... or like, a room in a haunted house type thing where it's just a path illuminated by old fashion street lamps, but everything else is the abyss
@noesunyoutuber7680
@noesunyoutuber7680 2 жыл бұрын
That would be fucking amazing, though you'd have to take care to place the lights on the path so their beam doesn't noticeably get cut off by the ultra-black surface of the walls and presumably the edge of the floor - which would ruin the illusion of infinite expanse by indicating that the light is being stopped by something. Lay it out right and it would be fantastic.

In Kentucky there’s a little site there called Mammoth Cave. There’s a location called Giant’s Coffin that is 175 feet under the surface. The tour guide does their little history class on it and then they turn the lantern off. Immediate disorientation. I was holding my wife’s hand and we both instinctively squeezed each other’s hands, almost to confirm that we were still there. The blackest blackest I have ever witnessed. A tour of 40ish people and you would believe you were all by yourself. One of the weirdest experiences of my life.

God, this reminds me of my room in one my older places of residence. It was the innermost room, so zero windows to let any natural light in. When I was in that room at night, blinking made the square root of zero visual difference, and even when it turned day, it was hard to tell what exactly I was looking at. Disorienting AF is putting it mildly.

I did some quick math on how much a room covered in it would cost. Horizon black sells 200mm x 200mm sheets for $200. If you wanted a 3m x 3m room you would need 1350 (15x15x6) sheets of horizon black. It would cost $270,000.

Making a dark room isn't actually particularly difficult though. The really interesting thing that could be done with this is lining a room like the anechoic chamber, with a suspended platform in the center. You could then actually have lights on the central platform and be apparently a platform floating in a void.

I have a condition called visual snow, it's where I constantly see a colorful static slightly tinted red, so I'd never be able to experience that level of darkness because it would just highlight my visual snow all the more and possibly make it really cool looking though. Even though I have really TV-static-like vision, I still have 20/10 vision. It's almost like I can see or distinguish every single individual rod and cone in my eyes and they are constantly firing. I also have photopsia, I think that's what it is, where I see constantly shifting forms of purple light chased by its complementary color, green, and the green follows suit and does the same thing the purple did. It starts this never-ending loop of complementary color illusions. I never really know which is which because if you see a color, you are going to then see its opposite, so it may be that the green starts out and the purple is the optical illusion, or the opposite. It's a chicken-or-the-egg kind of scenario.
