Testing More "Expired" Canned Food & Listener Questions

Tonight I'll be testing the rest of the 8 to 10 year old canned food I found tucked away in my food storage to see how it has changed, and if it's still good.

I'm working on cleaning out a deceased family member's hoarded home which included A LOT of canned and dry goods up to 30 years old. The cans that I found often leaked were: condensed milk, tomato products, pork & beans, and generic dr. pepper type sodas. I suggest storing the acidic foods separtely and maybe make it a practice to toss them much sooner comapred to other canned items. Food items that were packed in plastic bottles/jars such as wet condiments, peanut butter, etc were all VERY spoiled. Pretty much all dry goods in original packaging were infested with moths, weevils, or other tiny critters. It is VERY important how you store your food items!!

Thanks so much for putting this together. My wife will throw out cans the day after the "best by" date," but she watched this all the way through so maybe she'll bend a little. Re: bulged in or out: many foods are warm when the can end is put on and sealed, so they'll suck in from a little contraction as they cool. "In" is not a problem. If a can is bulged, though, or spits at you when you open it, that means that there's gas/pressure in there from bacterial action...avoid them! Re: medication expiration dates: It varies from medication to medication as to how long after the expiration date they are still good, but it's illegal to sell a medication after its expiry date. The military tested some cephalexin (antibiotic) that was 25 years out of date and it was still good. Proceed at your own risk.
