That metal dark blue over black is brilliant. I'm just building an old Monogram kit Rolls Royce Roadster and have bought SMS lacquer Dark Blue but will have to see if the Mr Color GX is available here in Australia yet and get that blue. BTW, the DSPAIE marker soft tips you tested have just arrived in my post box and they are sensational for fine work on small pieces. As usual, you keep coming up with winners every time. Thanks mate.. and if I was lucky enough to win a Gundam kit I'd be rapt as I've never made one.

Have you done a video about airbrush psi? I’m really confused about how much pressure I should use. The only thing I know is that paints that have heavy metal flakes need more psi, same with mica powders.
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 2 жыл бұрын
It's different among airbrushes. The Badger 105 Patriot only requires 15psi no matter what your spraying. The company actually says in the manual 15 psi is setting for that airbrush. The way its designed it pushes thru any paint you put in it without clogging up. But with other airbrushes you should stick with a needle of at least 0.3mm or bigger And go with a minimum of 20psi

Great vid, but no surprise there : ) I am building the Revell Apollo Saturn V, and I need the right kind of gold for the landing module. The GX golds looked a little too pale gold, can you recommend a Mr. Hobby gold that would fit the LEM? Or another brand, but I really love Mr. Hobby lineup. Always an inspiration to see your Aladdins modelling cave, if I could make mine just a 10th I'd be happy. I have a pretty unrealistic video request, and I know it's a longshot, but a video oon the different spraybooths out there would be fantastic. I know the expensive ones are good, but are there cheaper (100-130 USD) options that are good? A video on what to look out for when buying, like AC fans vs DC fans or minimum specs.... Currently I am using a stove extraction unit, and I am trying to find time and energy to build it up so it's good, but it is large and I think it would just be nicer to have a prebuilt.
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 2 жыл бұрын
Many of the pros I've run into out there use a plastic storage bin tipped on its side with the oven extractor attached. Then they stick an led light to the inside top. The good thing about that is all the different sized storage bins you can choose from at Target and Walmart helps when getting the right size for your home. If I didn't get my booth on sale on Prime Day that's the way I was going.

Levelling Rapid are exclusively for flat paint Its kinda like mr hobby thinner, but for later new brand (like mr hobby GX, primer surfacer 1000 & number 160 to 370 above) Primer surfacer 1000 can't be thinned with mr hobby Metallics doesn't blend well with mr hobby to Levelling are go for all usually, but it can make paint harder to stick if sprayed thin
@plamocollector
@plamocollector 2 жыл бұрын
@@somechinesedude5466 levelling thinner will give metallic paints a high shine / gloss finish, whereas rapid thinner will give you smaller particle flakes because of the faster drying finish, without gloss look. I personally use rapid for metallic paints as the end result is better because of the smaller metallic flakes. Mr rapid thinner is kinda the same as metallic master thinner from gaia. So you can use either one depends on the finish you are looking for.

A newbie question here, but can you use a color from a brand with thinner from another brand? For example, I'm trying to get some thinner for Mr.ColorGX series, can I use Tamiya Enamel Thinner for it?
@ooharasora4097
@ooharasora4097 Жыл бұрын
Truth is, I'm trying to airbrush some ABS parts, and I've already got Mr.ColorGX's color, but I heard Mr.Hobby's thinner will break ABS part, what should I do? I heard Tamiya Enamel won't break ABS plastics on several Japanese videos on KZbin, but I'm not sure if stuff from different brand mix well together. Some people I asked even told me that if you paint an ABS part, it will break within 1-2 years even if it didn't break immediately.
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 Жыл бұрын
OK, you can't use the Tamiya Enamel thinner. The Mr Color Thinner is fine. Here what to do. Lay down a primer first. The primer is the barrier between the abs and the paint. With a primer as your base the paint on top of it won't reach the abs plastic.
@ooharasora4097

@@barbatosrex9473 I see, thanks for replying. But what primer should I use though? Does Mr.Sufacer-1000 work as a primer? Also, if it's only a tiny part that I want to paint in between a gap, what should I do? Do I have to paint the whole thing? I guess I could mask everything out too, but I just want to see if there's any other way. (For reference, the part I'm trying to paint is SMP Garuda Eagle's knight mask's "hole".)

Does brush painting high metallic glosses work for cars, can I sand out the strokes and reseal or will it lose the flake? just got back into Car models after 30 years and in serious need of advice.

It does look brushed on for sure. I tested the red for you. The airbrushed one looks smooth like it's plated. The brushed one does look like it's brushed for sure but with several coats with sanding in between you should get a nice look

Hey Rex, I am recently trying to use this paint with Iwata Revolution CR, it says a 0.5 one. I never had any problem with any primer or normal mr color lacquar paint. But I don’t know why this metallic gx causes me some trouble. I just cannot get a thin coat of this paint. When the trigger is not pulled much, normally I would get a thin coat of paint, but not for this one. The paint just didn’t come out. When the trigger is pulled to a certain point, abruptly I would get a really thick coat. I don’t know why it’s like this. I have tried different thinning ratio and different pressure. My air compressor is also a iwata one. Do you think the cause of this is my airbrush or something else? Also this paint would dry in my airbrush lid fast even with leveling thinner. What do you think is the perfect thinning ratio and pressure for a thin coat like in your vid. Thanks a lot.

@@barbatosrex9473 I did some tests further. I finally get a stable metallic coat with Mr Metallic color gx, but the coat is a thick coat that makes the part looks like a small piece of gold rather than the thin coat that shown in your vid. I used thick paint (60:40 to 50:50), rather than thin paint like (30:70). The thinner I used is leveling thinner (my rapid one is still on the way, so I cannot try that). My experience is that a thin paint would cause the airbrushing work to be really wet, since I used leveling thinner and it is really slow to dry, the result is always a mess. The air pressure I set during spraying is approximately 18 psi. And the airbrush trigger needs to be pulled little further. I use the same airbrushing move as you did in the vid. But the coat I get is huge different from your smooth shine coat. I share the coat with a Google drive link, drive.google.com/file/d/15qzBTWfWUwuwcK5JW33Spp3r0OOXLqHE/view?usp=sharing. I'd assume you used rapid thinner in the vid, so maybe that's the problem.

I usually prefer 30/70 Metallics pigment are pretty thick, you can thin it quite alot, almost triple the size of its bottle DO NOT PRETHINNED these for long term (like 10 months) Always thin when you want to use it, if there is left over, do not mix with fresh unthinned pigments

@@treborrrrr paints have its own seperator/oil that preserve them when not used or stirred, if kept in dark & dry place, paints can last for 10 or 20 year ish Thinner can evaporate even if you keep it in dark & dry place, once it evaporate, the only thing left is the pigment, the oil evaporates along with the thinner Not to mention, paints that lost its seperator have grainy texture, at least the case for mr hobby, its very visible on our eye, on camera, maybe not You can pre thinned paints, but don't leave it for too long, in my case, probably 2 year from old work, i notice the quality is deterioating alot Levelling thinner also help recover some quality, but spray it on something else first to see if its "good enough"
