I liked that the Spartan seems a bit more compact than the shocker. I also like how you installed it and was ready to go immediately. The down side to the Shocker to me was how you had to keep adjusting and fine tuning it through the air bag. But, they both look like quality products. Looking forward to the side by side comparison Sam!

I have only pulled a gooseneck a couple times. But last summer I traded in my 30ft bumper pull travel trailer for a 35ft 5th wheel. Instead of going with a traditional 5th wheel hitch I went with an Andersen for the lightweight and having a ball instead of a king pin. Since then I upgraded to the Gen Y 5th to gooseneck for 2 reasons. 1 no extra hitch in the bed of my truck and 2nd the torsion flex for the ride quality. I have only pulled it twice with it. But the ride is so much better. Also it feels way stronger than a 5th wheel pin box. Was definitely very heavy and not any easy install. But I used my truck and the jacks to get in positioned where I needed it.

Sam, check out the hitches from Airsafe. The hitch uses two airbags, one forward of the post and one mounted aft of the post. You don't get the rocking motion in pulling or braking like the Shocker Hitch. 75% of the custom horse hauler rigs use Airsafe.

I was hauling freight out of my F350 for a couple of months before I bought my 40 ft trailer and put airbags on the truck suspension. 3 weeks into using it I had to stop because it bothered my back too much. Being a master machinist I like the design of the Spartan better. It looks like it is a lot more stable. While still absorbing the shock load. Having 4 connectors it didn't have all the loose play in the hitch. That was a concern I had with the other one for longevity use. God bless

IDK, to me it looked like it was doing exactly what you were talking about as you was going down the road, and we were watching the hitch expecting to see it working the mechanical linkage, when in fact it was just slopping around from the cantilever effect on the ball. I didn't see the linkage arms moving up and down any at all. I do sopose the tongue weight is very critical for proper function, looks like you were on the lite side. I like your vids, keep up the great work! P.S. I have the same machine and mulch head!

@David-fk6yg4 жыл бұрын
Do you have either of the extra chargeing methods on your trailer? (Plug OR solar type of trickle charger) If you are relying on the truck to charge while using the trailer, the trailer battery will be used up very quickly. UNLESS your driving for long periods between load/unload intervals. All in all, get a good trickle charger that will cut itself off & back on to keep a batt. charge & ready to work when you need it. I've got them on every price of equipment that we don't use every day. Hope this helps, any other questions shout back & I'll try to help.

Would it be possible to rotate the hitch 180 deg? It looks like there is enough room between the truck and trailer, it would also shorten you overall length vs. even the standard hitch.
@Tui1Hit3 жыл бұрын
You should not do that. It will apply a negative moment (engineering term for mass - distance unit) on the coupler which will resist against its designed spring effect for a cushion-like ride. If you look at the coupler where is set up normally, the weight of the trailer will want to push down on the coupler. If you are to reverse it as you suggested, now the weight of the trailer (lateral weight while being pulled) wants to pull up on the coupler shockers instead of pushing down. Even though the shocks still flex to provide spring effect, it won't be as much as flex on the coupler because it is acting against the tongue weight of the trailer. One way to say it; more flex vs less shock flex if you're to flip it over.

Hey, how do you like the paint finish on that trailer? Do you know if they bead blast the metal before primer and paint? I called a Diamond C trailer dealer a few days ago and asked him what he thought of the paint on their trailers. The first words out of his mouth was "I wish it was better". Did you ever have experience with Midsota trailers?
@VBELTandSON4 жыл бұрын
He said diamond c needs better paint?!? What?? I think the paint in the diamond is pretty damn good so far. Very thick and handles binders smacking it hasn’t chipped at all yet. My buddy has same trailer but a year old and his paint is dirty but hasn’t flaked off at all.
@mikef15864 жыл бұрын
@@VBELTandSON that's what the salesman told me. I need to call right to the factory to see what their paint process is. I'm up here in the salt belt and I'm tired of crappy finishes like on our last PJ trailer. Paint came off in sheets and it might have seen salt 5 times in the 5 years that we had it. I've heard good things about Midsota's paint. The metal is blasted then they use an epoxy primer and paint. I definitely like some of the features of the Diamond C though.

In case I was misunderstanding how the absorption worked, I went to the manufacturer's site and watched a demo video where the components clearly showed compression and the side plates becoming more level. I wonder whether Sam is feeling ride improvement because he wants to see improvement. Maybe more tongue weight to get the hitch off its stops?

cyclist I talked about that in the video. Definitely could use more tongue weight to make it squat the hitch but placement of the machine is at the point to allow me to keep weight on the tail for chaining to the tail.
