Testing Nitrates! Which Kit is BEST?!

video was pretty good. pretty sure you should be filling the API tubes until the bottom curve is level with the line. that's what I remember back in high school anyway.

If the test is not accurate, then nothing else matters. This video has the potential to be incredible, but without a discussion of accuracy its basically pointless.

Love the readability of the Nyos test kit, but their reagent bottle is leaky as hell! So sticking to Salifert at the moment.

Bruh, I’ve been using Hanna nitrates checker for over a year. I’ve heard nothing it seem nothing in the instructions about any filter

It sounds like you have the Nitrate HR checker. Only the LR version has a filter step.

Doesn't Red Sea also make another (non "Pro") Nitrate test that is a bit less expensive?

@@BulkReefSupply Check into the Marine Care Multi Test Kit from Red Sea. It has a Nitrate test that is quite a bit different than the one you showed. There is no fancy color wheel., only a simple card to compare colors.

In my opinion out of all color chart nitrate test kit nyos is best easy to read!!!!! And accurate I highly recommend it the only small gripe I have is Regent dropper let's drops come out way too fast so I recommend holding it at a slight angle other than that it's still the best color chart kit. What makes this kit so good is the two vials that are side by side makes it very easy to match colors

Great detailed video. I'm not too invested into the hobby yet (~$300?) and only keep freshwater fish, shrimp, and plants. I'll stick with my API Master Test Kit and maybe splurge on the Salifert Test Kit if I feel a little impulsive. With so many plants in the tank, my Nitrates are typically around 0 anyhow. I just like buying more fish stuff, lol.

This is good video and it's for saltwater kits. The freshwater nitrate test kit from API is what I use. It's almost impossible to differentiate between 40 and 80 ppm. The damn red colour looks same. You didn't cover this up in this video because saltwater nitrates are never/should never be so high and I get that. Thanks again.

Excellent video, thank you. I use the Nyos and Salifert, everything else is Hanna. Hanna nitrate test is way too involved and although its probably the most accurate, I still enjoy other options. BTW....I usually run 2 or 3 diff tests and avg the readings.

The Hannah Checkers are awesome I have the pH alkalinity and they're very easy to read there's nothing wrong with wanting to get good accurate results

I can not for the life of me tell the difference between the miniscule color changes they want you to decipher. I want my test to give me the results at the end

Hands down Nyos. Colors match perfectly, has all ranges and durable. Love everything about it but the price! Salifert and api would be good options if you have high nitrates. Salifert is very hard to read from the side angel to me. Espially with only 1 ml of water If it werent for that I would choose it over nyos for the price. I have both and dont even use salifert. i pretty much immediately replaced it with the nyos and difference was night and day. my nitrates are always between 2 and 3.

I totally agree with you I don't care for the salifert nitrate test kit like you said there's not much water and if you're looking down from the very top down towards the color chart it shows 0 nitrates but when you hold it sideways it shows a little bit of color what is up with that I do not like this test kit I'm going to get nyos I would expect a better test kit from salifert

The Hanna one is insanely fiddly and time consuming. I remember all the hype before it was released and all the disbelieving disappointment afterwards lol

API 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗞𝗦 !!! In freshwater,you can get by for a short time on high nitrate readings. But API colors blow chunks once you get above 40.When you need accurate readings to base your remedy on,you cant depend on API higher end colors for accuracy. As far as test tubes tipping over...I cut holes in a styrofoam platform to hold my tubes during testing. What I want to do,...and again,for my FRESH WATER tank,is find a digital device with great accuracy.Anyone have suggestions?

everything is perfect and interesting, but if you don't make a comparison on accuracy, maybe with an ICP test, this video is missing the point, that's the most important thing.

Really the only way to test accuracy is to send it to have it ICP test. I find these test are a little inaccurate but as long as it is repeatable and consistent, you can pick a point and keep it at that. By the way, Hanna aren't exact accurate either, I used it on a set alkalinity liquid and found it to be about 5% off which is acceptable for a hobby level kit.

@@garrycole9187 ICP isn't accurate for a lot of the parameters. Check out the comparison between the different companies offering ICP, same sample but way different results. Use the tools, but use your judgment.

Does the nyos work for freshwater? I am lookong for the most reliable for both freshwater and marine water. I use api test nitrate and I hate it. I feel like it's high all the time and hard to read.
