Cape Falcon Kayak

Cape Falcon Kayak

Күн бұрын

Building on the success of our last 15 foot solo canoe, this latest 14 footer is quick, nimble, and a ton of fun on flat and moving water. It's still a bit small for me, but overall I'm really happy with how this one turned out.

I wish you had plans for a conoe with a flat back transom for a small trolling motor to use with a light lithium battery. It would be awesome for a pan fisherman.

Makes sense to me but there would be no way to predict the geometry for it with all the different sizes that we build. if I was going to do that I would do is just build the frame like normal And then cut everything at the desired location and fit a half inch thick plywood transom with a tiny little custom to attach each framing member. For that amount of work, though you could as easily build my new pedal Drive canoe, which allows you to drop a Hobie mirage drive or an electric motor through the Drive adapter box, and then you can use the same steering mechanism for either configuration. If you haven’t seen the video about the pedal canoe, you should definitely check it out! Also, we’ve got some gray fishing videos on the channel as well.

Excellent video ! Showcasing the most recent build in so many different situations. Really happy to see that old Cherokee still pulling for ya ! So psyched to try any canoe. And listening carefully to know what to look for. I even bought some 13’ cedar to make a nice light boat. Also I’m now friends with one of your students from Ottsville Pa. I can spot one of your designs from literally, half a mile away !

Fantastic! Hugely enjoying the progression of these canoes and your detailed descriptions of both the build and your thoughts driving the design. Increasingly certain that one of these is in my future (hopefully my near future). Video just needs a bit more insect swatting... :-)

Metal oxide in the resin will give you better uv protection. Iron oxide copper oxide titanium oxide. They convert light to electrons which they lose to oxygen. The metal oxides have to be on the surface.

Great video! I see in this version that you have moved away from the sheer blocks giving more sheer curve fore and aft, and lost the recurve shape to the stems. Is it possible with your system to still go that way?

Yeah absolutely, this is just one option.

So if you're bigger, chubbier, like me you'll need a longer canoe. I've been at least 200 lbs since 1975 and that is still my goal at 67. Lighter is better! the most difficult self-rescue I've done is in an Owen wood/glass racing shell and I quickly realized it was best to swim the boat to shore, drain and get in. Most people don't realize how much rolling out of the boat is disorienting. I used the old scuba technique of blowing bubbles to figure out which way was up. At 6 in the morning there is only a little light and you want to be sure which direction is up.

Interesting point about longer boats having more wetted surface, but doesn't a longer boat also have more lbs of buoyancy, and therefore ride higher in the water (have less draft) for a given paddler/cargo weight, and therefore not really have more wetted surface because of the shallower draft?
@capefalconkayak
@capefalconkayak 2 жыл бұрын
It seems like it should work that way doesn’t it? The best way to illustrate why it doesn’t is to take an extreme example. Let’s say you had a boat that is 40 feet long and 2 feet deep but only 1 mm wide, in that case it would have a huge wetted surface for the amount of volume it was displacing. Now in real life the differences aren’t that extreme, but it’s definitely noticeable although other aspects of the hull design can quickly eclipse that effect. My big aha moment with this came early in my building career when I built two absolutely identical kayaks with the exception of one being 2 feet longer than the other. The shorter kayak felt fast and nimble and the longer one felt slow and draggy, which was really confusing to me at the time because I was always told that longer boats were faster!
@flt528
@flt528 2 жыл бұрын
@@capefalconkayak OK that's a very interesting example. I suppose that another way of phrasing what you're saying is that you can arrive at given displacement using different combinations of L x W x D, and those different combinations will have different wetted areas? Increase L, and D will go down because the boat will draw less water due to the additional volume provided by the added length, but total wetted surface could go up since the reduction in draft might not fully offset the addition in length? (I am ignoring the increase in boat weight from the increase in L.) And as you pointed out, there are other objectives in hull design than minimizing wetted surface, and wetted surface is not the only variable that affects speed. Perhaps your A/B comparison with the kayaks is a lot more insightful than abstract thought about displacement and surface area, because that example is applied to actual kayak-shaped boats (that are the same hull design of course). Anyway Brian thanks for the reply! I'll be building two of your canoes in the spring and this helps me think about what length I want for the solo.

You could make a skin on frame round coracle boat from Ireland / Wales (would have the smallest wetted surface ) and a pack canoe and touring canoe all with the same weight. To build the coracle to the same weight as the other boats would be building it with a thicker frame than required. The touring canoe would have the largest wetted surface and best tracking tracking for touring and could perform better in some waves. If all boats and loads are the same weight they displace the same volume of water.

Any plans for a SOF Outrigger? Wondering where the hull shape would be based from.
@capefalconkayak
@capefalconkayak 3 жыл бұрын
Speaking from experience, there's a lot of technical challenges to an SOF outrigger. It's very difficult to achieve the appropriate bluntness at the ends of the underwater section and the Ama is an annoying project as well. I think for an outrigger I'd stick to fiberglass over a foam plug.
