Lovely portrait of sanding. God bless anyone who sticks with that chore. And thanks for the video, I was just looking for a way to get out to my mooring for the boat and after I checked if I could walk on water, figured I needed a not-too-wide yoke of some sort. I built one of these years ago. They are nice boats. One thing that I would stress is to clean all the dust off the sides and bottom before trying to duct tape them together. I did not at first and, of course, the tape did not stick. The additional zip ties are a good idea. As I understand Michaels idea for this was to have a quickly built boat for when you find yourself wanting a boat and don't have one available, and it can be built very quickly and very cheaply if you are looking for a temporary boat, or, like this fellow did, you can make a really nice almost work of art. Well done Lost Wax 2

9:55 Probably could have / should have routed a radius on that lift-point- just a thought. Nice project. I can see myself building a canoe like this. I am an off-and-on professional woodworker and I can see that as a very good design for a user-friendly family canoe being that it's flat bottomed and thereby has some stability over a rounded chine canoe. As a woodworker, building a run of these with particular cosmetic and esthetic alterations seems like it would be a sensible effort. I have made boat bottoms in the past from 8' plywood. Athough from a cost perspective it might be hard to justify a reasonable selling price based on labor time, the availability of ACX and marine AAX is not what it used to be as you discovered. Esthetically I would probably choose a non-keyed glued scarf to join the ply halves into 15'5" planks instead of a battened butt joint. You can readily plane these halves using a reverse fold. Not much more work than a batten over a butt, and no interruptions in the sole. Another visual improvement you might consider for your next canoe is in the fiberglass tape application. What you did here is fine structurally. Nevertheless, you might find it less time consuming to apply the tape, and then use matt over that (width about 10"?) to extend the bulky edge of the tape further into the bottoms of the sole. This will allow an easier time fairing the transition, offer an added durability factor, while permitting the use of your random orbit sander to initialize the bulk of the work. I hope you will be making more boats!
@LostWax2 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback, I'm sure that'll be helpful for others considering a build like this. You are right, it would be nice to have a more comfortable place to hold the canoe while carrying, and rounding off those bits of wood would help. That is one of the main reasons I added handles to my sailboat build, and even though it weighs the same, carrying it feels like half the work.
