Testing out Icing in X-Plane 12 in the Piper Cheyenne PA-31T

I test/show off how even if it is raining at the ground, you can be in danger of icing not much higher, and this can be very dangerous in a GA airplane. I wanted to see if the de-icing system in the Cheyenne could handle marginal conditions (and assumed right that it couldn't) - but we manage to drop down to warmer air and complete the flight.

Everything is doing great. We are still Marie Kondoing everything here, which makes us feel like adults. I think you may have missed last weeks Disney video - not sure.

Hey Kris, "We are eventually just gonna go down." Well I certainly hope the complimentary peanuts, soft drinks, and CBD gummies have been passed out prior to this. 🙂 Very nice job of averting crisis here. Don't really even like driving in the rain, can't imagine flying in it. -Carm

It's the one big killer in General Aviation - the feeling like you have to go, you have to make it. But it is just no fun to fly in a small plane in weather like that (except for me in a flight sim, of course). And the killer of ice usually is its warm enough on the ground, but pilots forget it isn't in the sky so they take off under okay conditions and go right into the belly of the beast. It was a nice challenging flight, but if I was a pilot in real life, it would have been a HARD pass... even if it meant leaving the plane and flying a commercial flight home and having to get my plane weeks later (which ALWAYS is an option).

Good morning Kris. I am digging these flights. I never thought that I would have any interest in online flying. But you helped to turn me into a fan. That shot at the 3:16 mark is so lifelike. It really looks like its actually raining out there. OK. I am off to enjoy the flight. Did you guys get any good effects {light/dark} with yesterday's total eclipse? We did not get anything here. One time I was flying, had my headset on, and I hear this boom of lightning and I jumped - I thought, holy crap I wasn't expecting it to rain here, turn to the window - perfectly sunny. Yup, there was a storm in the flight sim at the location I was in and it scared me for a second. That's how realistic it can get when you are in the zone. Here, the light looked a little funny on the ground, the shadows looked a little blurry, but if you looked up it looked like the sun - we got something like 85% here, so with the glasses it was cool - but the 2017 was greater here and that's when it got a bit darker and breezier - yesterday nothing like that happened.

This plane was for XP11 that I updated (you can look at forums.x-plane.org in the Carenado and XP12 thread for the changes). Having said that, that compatibility could break at any update, so I just wanted to caution you about that - Luckily the Carenado planes are very basic, so there aren't tricks employed that can be changed with the updates like other planes, but still - just a warning. Having said that, I still fly three Carenado planes I updated in XP12 and enjoy them thoroughly - but they are basically abandoned at this point since the designer only works in FS2020 at the moment.
