The bubbles in the molds are usually caused by mixing too fast and not trying to get as many bubbles out prior to pouring. Also, to decrease the amount of bubbles in your silicone mixture, pour from an elevated point and in a thin stream. Slow and steady is the key and not mixing to vigorously. I've been making my own molds for almost 15 years this way. Hope this helps! Peace!

Kate Bailey I have a question and would greatly appreciate any tips you could give me. I have worked with resin but not made my own molds before. My husband has asked me if I can make resin casts of some of his model car parts and I’m just not sure how to go about making a mold of something that isn’t flat on one side. Like little car parts. Can you give me any advice? Thank you!!
@katebailey15445 жыл бұрын
@@jkm253 Two part molds would probably be best, especially if there is a lot of detail. Depending on how big the part is I would use mold putty. It's not cheap, but it is easiest for small molds. You have to be fast with it too because it sets up pretty fast. There is a ton of info on KZbin about mold making, even making your own molding putty with 100% silicone caulking. Hope this helps. :)

You should use the bottom of the original heart dish to make a pretty lid for it, by making a mold of just the bottom of the dish so you get all that pretty detailing

There are a bunch of ways to remove bubbles from the silicone before you pour the mold. A pressure pot being the best as it forces most of the bubbles out.

They all turned out great! The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert as I'm still learning about working with resin myself, was to put some holes in the leaf mold so that you could add your inks at those edges? Or like someone else suggested with a needle so that there is no hole left in your mold. Which now that I think about it, my way would leave holes where excess resin would have to be sanded away. Definitely the needle idea. LOL Won't leave any holes in the mold. Possibly, make the back of the mold into 'flaps' that you replace once you've dropped the inks?

I didnt read comments but im very VERY familiar with silicone, if you can find a vibrating table or do a high pour(meaning pour SLOWLY and thinly from as high as you can possibly get-standing in a chair or table or pouring the silicone from your height to the floor- you will essentially get WAY less bubbles and get a better mold.) Having done many molds in silicone from going to school for it i really prefer doing a high pour(or both) but It doesn't seem to work well with the actual resin lol im not sure why. Lol Goodluck! I love your videos! Please keep making content! 🙏

When your resin is warm it's more liquid and the ink will spread more. Also just poke around with a plastic palette knife or something to push it down. You could also pour some resin, drop ink, more resin, more ink, and layer it a little like that
