I’ve been waiting for this one! Can’t afford it, but I found a great bargain on the EF 135 f2.0 L. 135 is where the magic begins! One day hopefully….

I’ve always found the 135 focal length to be really special, especially wide open

Just grabbed the RF 135 at Bset Buy...24 months, no interest, $25 a week (97 a month actually) I always take advantage of that offer and usu pay it off in a year anyway.

Hi Eric, thanks for the video! For me the big questions is do I sell my EF 135 f2 for £500, buy the RF version for £2000 for the sake of 1/3 of a stop, sharper image, and image stabilisation. When I got into full frame and the RF system, the 135 f2 was my first telephoto lens over a big old 70-200, I'm now a happy owner of the 70-200 RF because it's so much smaller and lighter, the 85 1.2 RF is so much sharper than the EF that again it was a no-brainer. I think the new 135 is a harder sell because the old EF is still such a good lens for such a good price. If I had loads of money to spare I would probably just upgrade, but at the moment it doesn't seem worth it!

True you can still get a new EF 135 for much less than half the price of a new RF 135. As a non-zoom user I chose the RF 135 over the RF 70-200 2.8 although I loved that lens too.

And yes, East Stroudsburgh is a very cool town. We were camping nearby last month and my daughter and I had to hit the record store for record store day!

To me, the biggest weaknesses of the old 135mm were the low contrast, poor handling of bright light (milky flares), CAs and very fast shutter speeds required, about 1/250s at least or better 1/500s to avoid slight handshake on that very sharp lens (no IS). Those are significant problems even though some of them matter less for portrait photography. The new glass fixes all of these issues. That’s exciting! The extra 1/3rd of light and sharpness isn’t all that important to me. But given the high price of the new 135mm, I still can’t justify it. 135mm is a fairly limiting focal length for portraits that only works sometimes. My favourite would be around 100mm but there aren’t many of those being made… so now where the 135mm could make sense is if it also doubles up as a sports lens. There are conflicting reports though as to the autofocus servo speed. Guess I need to rent it out to test this. But yeah, priced as it is, I don’t think I’m ready to invest in glass with a narrow use case.
