Briliant experiment! Can't wait for the updates. I rewatched the begining after you mentioned some boards getting more watter due to splash from ground (which I agree) and some more sun (I doubt that, why would the bottom boards be more shaded?) All in all pausing the video in the first second or so, it is obvious the top fared much better then the bottom and that should be taken into account when judging.

Hi Leo. hope your well, lovely contrasts with the different finishes. I have tried 4 parts turps substitute and unicorn milk it doesn't work, what you need is 200 ml of dragons blood crushed ant ankles three daffodils, toe nail clippings from a Wrexham footballer mixed with 2 litres of water from the River Dee, I tried that and that didn't work either🤣🤣 I would never thought of Tite Bond and water I suppose that will dry naturally, i think you done well with Tung and turp substitute and a fraction of the cost of Osmo oil which was disappointing for £70. You have done a great job on the scrapping and sanding back and all those finishes looks good and you should get the Turner Prize. As always a great video, catch you soon Take care mate

I have a garden room workshop with Red Cedar cladding which looks great so from new I used the very very expensive Owatrol Textrol HES which seemed to be what a lot of people use on Red Cedar. After one winter it looked terrible, covered in black spot mould, greying and generally scruffy. I sanded it with 80grit to remove the Owatrol product and after advice from Wood Finishes Direct, applied two coats of Barrantine wood preserver followed by two coats of Manning Premium Decking Oil. After a very wet winter it still looked great and water still beaded on the surface. This summer I have just given it a top up of the Manning Premium Decking Oil which is very easy and quick to use. I would be very interested to know the result if you spray water on your experiment ie which products shrug off the water the best. I look forward to the long term results so thanks for doing this.

Great video Leo. I have had Sikkens on my garden doors and gates for about 15 years now. It has just started to peel in a few places. Superb product. The woof has started to deteriorate on the door that is sun facing most of day but I think that’s due to rain really. My north facing door is just starting to look a bit worn. I am literally on the North West coast in Marshside, Southport so I get battered by the weather. I am very interested in the Rubio Product. I have a set of table and chairs that needs re-coating so this experiment may decide my choice of covering. Please do regular updates, even if via Shorts. Ken from Sunny ☀️ Southport.

@@Hand-i-Craft The Sikkens is a fantastic product but it is still just a coating. I’m interested in the Durogrit because it makes a chemical bond with the top layer of the wood as Rubio Monocoat does. I have a large hard wood planter that I coated with Rubio pre-treatment Sunprimer HWP and the Rubio Hybrid Wood Protecter. It seems to holding up very well over winter. Ken

Hi Leo, we have used Sadolin Superdec on our shutters in France where they get pretty brutal sunshine in summer. After a less than adequate prep in 2010 (tricky to clean out the grooves in the T&G construction) the first go lasted over 10 years. I repainted them about then as the finish was still very good and it did minimal prep with just a light sanding and I expect to get at least another 10 years out of this. Of course this is a water based paint not a stain and is quite expensive but it has easily outlasted your workshop with very little work. On new timber I expect it would have done even better. I will send you a photo by email.

Im very interested in how the rubio durogrit holds up. Im about to use that to 'restore' some sleepers that have been built into raised beds. I would have used the grassland beige for a more natural colour. Personally, i don't think the rubio wood cleaner would be necessary. When i emailed regarding the previous finish of the sleepers, they mentioned nothing about the cleaner. Only that it would be suitable for the application i wanted to use it for. As for updates. Maybe after a week to see the tones of each once fully cured. Then every 3 months. I definitely appreciate the effort you have put in. All that sanding and cleaning is probably what my eternity in hell is going to look like😅

Thanks Phil, excuse the cynic in me but if the Rubio does not perform as well as they claim, it gives them a reason because I didn’t use their wood cleaner. Also the extreme cynic in me suggests that’s why it is so loosely worded on their instructions 🤔🤷‍♂️

I saw your Shorts update on the Sikkens... I've had the same blistering when using the same two part Sikkens on a pine summerhouse, but it took several years(!) to get to that stage and even then only on the lower portions (so perhaps exacerbated by water exposure?). I suspect (as another commenter suggested) that perhaps the unusual wood you've chosen is particularly resistant to absorbing/binding any of the finishes and they all might struggle. Was there any reason that you chose the Treatex Bangkirai Oil over their standard range of Exterior Oils? I've just finished up a white oak patio table in Treatex Exterior Oil in their "Sheer" colouring, which is as close to a neutral, non-pigmented colouring as they do that still has some UV protection. I gave it three coats and very happy with how well it highlighted the natural colour and grain-patterning of the wood, but the real test will come with how well it holds up outside.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 29 күн бұрын
@@adamwenborn Thanks Adam, it’s been really interesting setting up this experiment as I’ve had lots of very interesting feedback and also anticipation as to how it will develop. The Bangkarai oil was recommended to me by a local timber yard that specialises in hardwoods. I have to say out of all I’ve tried I was most impressed initially with that product. Certainly will be interesting to see how things progress 👍👍

I'm interested in this as I, too, have cladding coated in the osmo uv protection oil which is looking poor and will require sanding back and recoated with an alternative. Interested on the sikkens, but notice you have used the Teak colour for this. Any reason you have went for lighter shades with some and darker shades with others? I Would think the long term results will differ quite a lot depending on what shade you use. The darker the shade of product equals more pigmentation and in turn more uv resistance generally.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It wasn’t a deliberate intention to go for vastly darker colours, I think teak was probably closest to the natural keruing colouring. The Rubio arrived and immediately I realised it would be much darker than I thought, but still decided to test it anyway 👍

Not convinced about the "use our cleaner" thing. The product info basically says it's a detergent cleaner with some boicides/fungicides. If you were to use this as part of your test for one product, you should really be pre-prepping all boards with a similar off-the-shelf product that does that job (several domestic cleaners fit the bill). However, the way you have now set the test up will give a fair, like-for-like comparison of products applied in a way which most people would follow.
