I hadn't noticed that edging on the falloff. Very interesting. One thing I haven't totally loved about it is the quality of bokeh. It's got what many describe as "nervous" or "jittery" bokeh, which is most apparent with busy backgrounds (like foliage). I still love the lens, but it's definitely quirky.

Hi, great review of the Fujinon XF 50-140 f2.8 lens. I'm a Scottish professional photographer, and I noticed the same artifact that you refer to in your review. The same issue appears in the Hasselblad Phocus software as well (free!). I mentioned this to the Fuji people at the recent 2018 UK Photography Show, in Birmingham, England. I was told nobody had heard of this issue. I discovered your channel when looking for others who might have spotted it too. I intend to show this video to another professional videographer, and well known blogger friend of mine. This should help prove my argument! Thanks. 😉 I've subscribed! 😎

If Fuji has a correction for CA in camera that should be the black outline in your photos man. If not i have no idea and it looks strange... Hope that is. Nice review man. Thanks
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
I've never seen this on any of my other fuji lenses. It has a characteristic of CA but I have no idea why it would show "corrected" in a raw file. I dont think it hurts the image much because I never see it unless I zoom in 300% . And its really rare. Like 1 out of 1000 photos might have it.
@HuntaDaKilla-b5i7 жыл бұрын
Fuji does 'bake' a lot of corrections into their RAW output. CA is one of them. Another is lens corrections. If you open a Fuji RAW file in Light room and go to the lens correction tab in the RAW filter it will have a sign saying something about the Fuji RAW. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not, but the lines are strange.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын

hi there! I don't own the lens itself but those dark lines on high contrast areas looks like a chromatic aberration that has been autocorrected by decolouring it and setting it black. I'm a bit old-school at photography but I've done that a couple of times when processing, so I can guess Fuji can do the same in camera, and make it look like there's no correction. I don't know just thinking out loud. Nice video! very useful to get to know the lens, thank you!

Nice review like always. The "Dark line" might be the in camera lens correction. In Lightroom, under Lens Corrections, Builtet-in Lens Profile applied. Click it it will show This raw file contains a built-in lens profile for correcting distortion and chromatic aberration. The profile has already been applied automatically to this image.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
I checked that. Turning off lens corrections still shows it. I also tried it in 3 different raw converters and all show the same thing. So still not sure if its processing in camera to the raw file or the lens is some how able to create it. I have not seen this on any other lens.

Brilliant video, stunning images. I am just wondering how you compare this up against the 55-200? I have had the opportunity to use the 50-140 on several occasions, but never the 55-200. I am on the verge of purchasing one or the other, but not sure which to commit to. Obviously, the 55-200 is a fraction of the price so that is a tick in the box. Cheers Graham
@buddyWalrus4 жыл бұрын
I had the 55-200 and just sold it for the 50-140. Some of my favorite images have come out of the 55-200 including portraits and casual wildlife. That lens, when stopped down, can be very sharp. It feels very lightweight for the quality and zoom range- perfect for travel or hiking. The OIS is also outstanding (I can get ~1/15 at any focal length). But the auto focus is just ok, variable aperture, barrel extends while zoomed, it can hunt in low light, and it is not weather sealed. The 50-140 improves on everything except weight, size and of course cost. The bokeh is noticeably better, but it’s not the bokeh monster that I see in the faster primes. My arms start to get tired holding it up after several minutes. I also miss the 200mm zoom, but I can live without it. I needed the upgrade for wedding ceremonies indoors (not my main job). Hope my experiences help.

I miss aperture & its lightning fast processing. I have lightroom & really don't enjoy using it. Aperture is the only reason I spent over $3000 on a iMac. Shame on Apple.
@kuliatv7 жыл бұрын
Aperture still works, despite Apple only committing to support through OS X Yosemite. In fact, I just updated my 12" MacBook to the latest rev of Sierra, and it feels like Aperture sped up a little. Not a long term solution since Aperture is officially EOL, but I will keep using it as long as I can. Like you, I find it so fast for the way I work. Making my selects, managing metadata, bulk image adjustments, flexible export and sharing options... Yes, it's a shame that Apple discontinued it w/o providing a viable alternative.

Unfortunately Aperture doesn't support RAW files for the X-T2 as far as the last time I tested it.

I've been working with X-Pro2 raw files with no problems. There is a footnote, however, indicating no support for compressed raw files in Apple's raw processor. In my offline conversation with Lee last night, he indicated that the photos in question were compressed raw, so I couldn't open them in Aperture.

I got the 50-140mm as well as the 90 mm in my bag. Wenn comparing both lenses at 90 mm und f5.6 the 50-140 stands no chance when it comes to sharpness. the 50mm F2.0 is far superior at 5.6 too. For a Zoom the performance is pretty good but can not beat a prime lens of very good quality. For that you have a lot of reach in a single lens.

Hı there, I had the same problem with the edges that contains light to dark transitions, I solve this problem in camera settings and switching the capture one from lightroom. Once again Thanks for an honest review, I own this lens I checked all my raw files and I cannot see any of the lines you have in your files, I agree with you 100% on the built quality and sharpness of this lens, but as you said it cannot be compared with my Canon 70-200 2.8II.. is just not there for me, I'm still not convinced on the bokeh this lens produces, another thing that bothers me about this lens is the noisy IOS and the internal parts moving when the lens is carried in an horizontal position...
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
I've never seen this on any of my other fuji lenses. I dont think it hurts the image much because I never see it unless I zoom in 300%. 1 out of 1000 photos might have it. And yes the OIS makes a hissing noise if you are using internal mics on the camera. You can actually hear it in my focus test. Its louder than the focus motor haha
@TomOhle17 жыл бұрын
Zed ProMedia cartoony edging is a sharpening artifact in ACR and capture one. I've seen similar with other ridiculously sharp glass like Sony 55 1.8 - you get a subject with harsh pop. I tend to reduce sharpening radius in ACR to counter. The glass is already razor sharp and doesnt need significant capture sharpening. Something that Tony Northrup noticed comparing 5dsr and canon 70-200 2.8ii combo to the xt2 50-140 combo, the Fuji combo is actually a sharper! petapixel.com/2016/09/14/fuji-x-t2-sharper-canon-5ds-r-preliminary-side-side-comparison/

I am looking to get into wedding and portrait photography and I am thinking about the following cameras: 1. Fuji X-T2 2. Sony a7ii Can you please give me your opinion?
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Mark Bromley If you need ibis and fullframe bokeh get the a7ii. keep in mind the good G master lenses are very expensive. You should theoretically have slightly better lowlight performance but I’ve never owned the a7ii. Ive only owned the a7rii and it’s lowlight performance is much better than the xt2. There is also an a7iii coming soon so maybe wait? Now with the XT2 you have a really solid built camera with much faster autofocus, awesome jpg quality and better menu layout. All the native lenses are much cheaper and in my opinion some of the sharpest glass you can buy. More than 90% of them are all made of metal. You also get awesome customer support and frequent firmware updates. The camera also shoots 4k if you need that. Good luck

If you have the time, wait for the A7iii, if they fixed the ergonomics it should be a very nice camera, but I also believe it's going to be priced above $2000 (well $2000-2200, not more than that) and the (good) lenss for sony are much more expensive than what you can get with fuji. Never buy a good body with cheap lens, it will disappoint you.

Comparing my new fuji 50-140 f2.8 IS to Canon i can't even get it close, images with Xt2 and 50-140 in studio shooting kids, portraits or outdoors and indoors shooting sports are not the same thing, blury and "muchy" results, i was used to sharp eye lashes and hair, now i can't get it. What am i doing wrong?
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Paulo Parreira that’s strange. Maybe you have a bad copy of the lens or an issue with it. Mine is very sharp. Sharper than any canon 70-200 I’ve used (f2.8 or f4)
@V4D26 жыл бұрын
Paulo, does the 50-140mm handle well against the primes you own, in low light ? I find it to be very fast in AF. I just think that f2.8 is not that fast, in terms of aperture, for low light, iin the fujis. Of the 3.. which do you prefer for low light ? I'd really like to have the 90.. but , without OIS.. i was thinking of going for the 50-140mm.. (tb falas português ?) ;)

V4D2 Após uns meses de uso aprendi a dominar melhor a focagem da xt2 e da lente. Neste momento faço todo o trabalho de estúdio com a 50-140 e tudo bem. Sim, sou Português 🙂

Paulo Parreira Obrigado, Paulo I ended up getting the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 for my Nikons. huge! but awesome. i don’t regret it at all. Still, the 50-140 is a really good lens. Not surprisingly i had the same learning curve, u seem to have had, when i got my Fujifilm camera. Mirrorless is different.. to say the least. It takes time..getting the hang of it. ;)

This looks like CA control baked into raw files. Could you test it please without corrections? (the dark outlines)

That was the whole point of showing you in Lightroom and CaptureOne the untouched .raf files.

Heya, given that the X-H1 and the XF 80 has been released, what do you think of the XF 50-140 as a portrait lens? Would you take it over the 56/80/90 with the X-H1? Thanks :)
@LeeZavitz6 жыл бұрын
Sana Kim김사나 for portraits I would still choose the 56mm
@sanakim51936 жыл бұрын
despite the slower AF? I guess you're saying the f1.2 is worth it?
@LeeZavitz6 жыл бұрын
Sana Kim김사나 For a portrait lens I’d rather have slightly slower autofocus and a lens with more magical characteristics than a faster autofocus lens with less character. The 56mm is also my favourite lens of all time from any camera system
@sanakim51936 жыл бұрын
Wow! Serious praise there. :-) Good to know! I guess its 56, 90, 50-140 on the list.. just a matter of which to buy first ^.^ Thanks Zed!

Nice video! Why don´t you use your Fuji stuff for youtube video?
@geburahsilberwolf76837 жыл бұрын
For us Fujiusers this is the second fastest afwise lens and i think its place is more at sports then portraits. For portraits are more the 56 or the 50 also the 90......maybe the 16-55 too I use it for Dogsports with an X-T2 and for this there is not a better lens in the lineup ...90 for sure if u get closer. Also theyve a very high quality 1.4 Tc which i use often for it and the 100-400 which give u more reach and costs u only a stop. Good Reviev like always ! Nice Greetings from Austria !!

Why doesn't anyone talk about the "loose sound" when the lens isn't connected to a camera?
@LeeZavitz5 жыл бұрын
That's some Fuji lenses with OIS. Its on floating mech in this lens. Once there is power it engages the mech and you don't hear that rattle.

If you could do a comparison of the exact same shot with another camera like your Sony with a similar lens I think it may make your claim more valid. Maybe that was just the lighting you were dealing with.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
I'm talking about the odd characteristic of this Fuji lens. How would taking the exact same photo with a Sony camera and different lens prove that a Fuji lens has this weird dark outline on hard edges? It only happens like 1 out of 1000 images in specific lighting. Super weird

This black line only happen with that lens?

Jose Gallardo it's the only lens I've seen it on but other people are saying they have noticed it on other lenses as well. So it's hard to say what causes it.

Hi there, I hope this email finds you well. We are a very small startup company based in Berlin. At this very moment our photography and video productions are out sourced, we like to change that and looking for a perfect camera which will help us to develop brilliant product photos, mostly still. For sure we also like to start with 4K. After spending quite much time in research what the best is I found the following ones: GH5, Alpha 7Rii, Fuji X-T2 and last the Olympus OM D E MII. Do you have any suggestion which one tom take? Thank you so much for your time. Andy

Your findings of the jacked edges has nothing with the lens to do. It's X-trans artifacts which shows both in Adobe, Iridient, X-Former, C1, On1, Luminar etc. etc... just that you don't make wrong conclusions it's and optical phenomenon. :)
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Gerner Christensen As I say in the video I’m unsure if it’s processing or not. It shows in every editor I’ve tried even turning off lens corrections. And I’ve never ever seen it on any lens that’s why I brought it up in this video. I mostly just hope someone else has seen this as well so I don’t look so crazy haha

I've seen the same edge effect on my X-T2 with the 18-55. I only notice it when pixel peeping - when viewing normally you don't see it, and the overall image is awesome.

Close your eyes. Relax. You lay at a beautiful beach at the edge of a beautiful blue sea. The free sun is in a blue sky shining on everybody. Everybody is happy, happy. Everybody has found out that the free sun is for one or the other reason not there anymore. Everybody has noticed that the free sun after that was replaced by a beautiful starry heaven or something and sometimes also with a big something what the people are calling “moon”. Everybody is thinking it is weird, but we get the whole thing for free, so what the heck. Imagine that on every beautiful star in the beautiful starry heaven with everybody in a free show is exactly happening the same: free sun, free beautiful stars in a beautiful starry heaven or something and sometimes a big free moon. Everybody until the end of times in the beautiful Universe happy, happy. Open your beautiful eyes. You see beautiful people who are until the end of times in the beautiful Universe happy, happy. You see at the beautiful planet Earth for instance beautiful people with beautiful eyes who have a little box or something that has a button or something that they press with their hopefully not greasy fingers. Nobody knows why, but the beautiful people are with their beautiful eyes and their hopefully not greasy fingers happy, happy with it, so what the heck, live and let live. It is obviously for the happy, happy people something that they like to do. Also it becomes clear that the happy, happy people are using one or the other system of a happy, happy internet, where they are studying at the happy, happy internet academy at the very interesting lessons of the professionals in order to do something what they like with the box in order to be even more happier, so at the beautiful planet Earth in the beautiful Universe until the end of times two thumbs up for everybody at Zed Pro Media at the happy, happy digital internet!
