I've had many lenses so far in my career and I've noticed that the plastic lens hoods (the well built ones) are actually better than the metal one, in my opinion, because if the lens falls or takes a hit, the metal ones tend to bend the lens frame

Have the 55-200 but just bought the 50-140. I do a lot of bird photography in lowish light. The extra stop of light is often useful and I can add the 1.4 TC. Finally, I do a lot of flying birds, and so the rapid autofocus is important. But I do like the lighter 55-200 for travel. Enjoy your videos.

A fair assessment of the two lenses. Thank you. I prefer the bokeh and additional reach on my 55-200mm, and it's so much lighter when hiking than the 50-140mm. But it does need good light. To off set that set back, I took the extra $1000 and bought the multi-purpose 80mm macro. It's a 2.8 prime that, in my opinion, is Fuji's sharpest lens, sometimes too sharp for portraiture even (in which case I crank up the luminence a bit to compensate). The 80mm is super for textures and paired together, the 55/200 telephoto along with the true 1:1 80mm macro gives me way more options when shooting.

Glad to ear that. However, my time with Canon crops has kinda spoilt me. Not a deal breaker but I miss my low light focusing ability at f/2.8 of the Canons during events. Either that or next time I need to switch off Exposure Preview during low light events and get a dedicated Fuji Lens. Was using my trusty Sigma 17-50mm Canon mount. Having said that the 7Dii and 80D are rated to focuss in lower light than the X-T2. Oh well.

I had a huge deal on a new one so couldn't resist. I love to use that lens. I bought it for shooting my son playing soccer but finally it's one that I use the most. It's nice to handle and I like the reach. It is very versatile. I understand it's a little big over other lenses but does not bother me. One annoying thing sometimes it does not want to focus. It didn't happen often but it happened more than once. If you take it for travel you probably need a second wider lens. 72mm FF equivalent can be frustrating when you can't take distance like a facade in a shallow street.

If you only have USD 200 to spend, or you only need telephoto occasionally, the XC 50-230 is a solid candidate. It may not be the best built, but it has a longer reach than any of the other two... and it's smaller and lighter. As a non-professional, it serves my needs just fine.

I have the 55-200, great general purpose lens, went on a Fuji sponsored day out using the 50-140 lens, brilliant a joy to use in the environment I was in. For carrying gear all day long, I’ll stay with the 55-200, plus my skill level couldn’t justify the cost. Love your videos
@mortenthorpe4 жыл бұрын
I now have both of those lenses - and even when I only had the 55-200, I think it’s a slouch on autofocus! It also has terrible handling of light when in backlist conditions - the 50-140 completely dominates it in both categories, and is just insanely fast in autofocus in general
@TheJ_G Жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison to the 55-200. I actually just sold mine and ordered the 50-140 to replace it. I always found the 55-200 to be a little too soft for my liking. It wasn’t offensively soft, and I got some decent shots from it, but it was just always a little underwhelming. It doesn’t look like the 50-140 is much better. I was really hoping that it would fill the 70-200 hole I have after moving away from a full frame sensor camera.

When I was shopping for a telephoto zoom lens, I never considered the 55-200mm because I do not like variable aperture zoom lenses. Also, since I had been shooting an 80-200mm f/2.8 on my Nikon film SLR, the 50-140mm Fujinon was perfect for me.

I've read a lot of the comments here and seen the video. In the video you mention that this lens is roughly equivalent to the 70-200mm f2.8 used by full frame shooters. I don't see anyone mentioning the real comparison to be made here. Well, I own a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 and it not only cost me nearly $1000.00 more than the Fujifilm 50-140, but it weighs a heck of a lot more! So, in my opinion this lens is nice and light and inexpensive. coupled with my XT-5 it's a much more pleasing package than my D700 and 70-200 Nikkor. Sure, the Nikkor has VR, but the D700 has no IBIS. I gave away my D7100 with a super zoom lens and switched to Fujifilm for APSc shooting. Best decision ever. especially since I was using most of my FX lenses on the DX camera, to save money. For me, I think this is the bigger picture. No pun intended.

I was able to score this lens while I was in Japn recently. Love it, and the pictures it takes. One thing that I found as an annoyance was the missing arca-swiss groves on the handle/foot. What's up with that. Every lens I've owned with the foot has always had the arca-swiss groves, but not this one. I ordered my favorite plate with the groves and now I'm happy. I see you added a plate too. . .

Chris, in the introduction (1:45) you asserted that the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm F4 OIS was a member of the company’s triad of Red Badge lenses. I must challenge that statement, as I own a copy of that product and can report that it *does not* bear the prestigious Red Badge. Perhaps you were thinking of Fujifilm’s XF8-16 mm R LM WR lens? That ultra wide optic does indeed bear the Red Badge of the Professional Series.

My favorite part of this video, Pal, was to see how OIS works on and off in the same setting and so I'd love it if you did one of these on the kit lens. Or all that you have. I want to see if the OIS works the same way for all the Fujifilm cameras or if this one is just that good. Because that is really good like that eliminates the need for body stabilization.

For me, I don't do portraiture, I just needed the extra reach, so the 55-200 it was. I don't regret it one bit, and it's not a question of "saving" $1000, I didn't actually have that to spend in the first place, there are bills to pay as well. I like to have the best I can afford, but when it comes down to it, the 55-200 when out and about is excellent, and gets some great separation still, with great Bokeh. I'm sure the 50-140 is better in that respect, but not for my purpose, and it needs to travel with me, and is only used in the daytime in good light anyway. The extra reach is more important to me. If I had the money, the 100-400 would be great as well. Fuji tend to make their zooms one stop better than similar lenses on other brands, in particular Canon, I've noticed, so the 55-200 is still a truly excellent lens.

Great review and advice. I am new to the Fuji system and got an X-S10 with the 18-55mm F2.8-4 lens. It's a great little combo so far. Now I am torn on which telephoto lens to get; the 55-200 looks decent, compact and good value for money; the 50-140 looks great image quality overall but the size & weight? And now we have the new 70-300 which obviously has the slower variable aperture range but it is weather-sealed, has OIS, a focus limiter and is compatible with teleconverters too! In the UK the 55-200 is £649, the 70-300 is £729 & the 50-140 is normally £1,300; however a store has a special offer with £350 discount, making it £950. Tough choices...

I just bought this lens and I love it. I have only one complain and that is about the noise that is constantly producing. It's like my laptop fan noise and at a moment I didn't know where that sound came from, laptop or the lens. And it was from the lens. I have the kit lens (18-55) and on that lens I can hear that hum only if I put it right next to my ear. So my question is: is it normal that the 55-140 lens to have such a loud hum noise? Or maybe my unit have this problem and in this case I'll return it. PS: Thanks for you videos. You helped me a lot with my XT-4

Very good and thorough review. Thank you. But I had to slow down the replay to half speed to follow you. The level of excitement over every little point was a tad overwhelming.

Love your style man! At first, I thought you were corny, well you are but you do you. You have great content and reviews. You're my fav Fuji guy for info and content. My next purchase will be the 70-300 when it becomes available but that 50-140 is on my list for the future.

Love your review and your channel. The best channel I followed so far. Can I have your recommendation, between 55-200 and 70-300, which one should I get? Already owned 18-55. I'm just a hobbyist, not a pro photographer.

Excellent review. I have a question for you. Now we have 70-300 mm lens for Fuji. I am planning to buy a zoom telephoto lens. Which one tsp you suggest in between 50-140 mm &70-300 mm lenses? Also do we get a lens collar for 70-300 lens? Please advise for these two questions. Thank you so much for helping me to learn on my new XT4 camera. 🙏🏽💐

Hey Chris, this is an old video so not sure you'll see my comment and question, but I'll give it a try. I don't have any long lens yet for my XT-3. I can't afford the 50-200 or the 100-400. So, my question: For sports an wildlife on the XT-3 would you think that the 55-200 or the 70-300 would be more versatile? At first I was thinking that the f3.5 aperture was be the answer to my question because of indoor sports. But, is there really a big difference between 3.5 and 4.0 given the ISO performance of the XT-3? Have a great week!
