Durable bike [older modals are robust enough to take passenger], with almost no/easy maintenance. One of the reasons why we dutchies like tunnels more than bridges is making speed going down, and can manage the up

Thank you for the review. Your video is the first one of its kind I’ve seen on KZbin that truly expounds on both the positive and negative aspects of the Dutch style bike. All the other videos just want to tell you how wonderful the Dutch bike design is without seriously mentioning its drawbacks. For example, the Dutch bike is made of steel which makes it very durable but the downside is that steel makes the bike very heavy. Personally, I love my aluminum frame bike for its light weight and would never consider buying a steel bike for that reason. The Dutch bike is not the perfect bike, but in reality there is no such thing. Thanks again for a thorough and honest review. I learned a lot.

Happy new year! Fun fact there is no shame in riding a knockoff or an old beater. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re poor either. This kind of bike is not a status symbol, it is a means of transportation, and the only thing that matters really is if it rolls - convenience is key really. The fact that you fixed up this modest but useable bike is 100% cred ;). The missing chain cover is a very realistic detail, these things give out all the time. Aluminium have been hte defacto standard for a while, I think only the real heavy duty classic transport bikes have steel rims anymore. Nothing wrong with aluminium rims, although I personally prefer steel ones, they carry a bit more momentum. Oh and sitting upright means you always put your full weight on the pedals, which gives a lot of torque, and we need torque more than speed really. BTW your saddle is a bit low, you’re supposed to pedal with the front of your foot, that way you can apply a lot more force than “flat-footed”.

im a bike mechanic here in the netherlands and yes i see these plenty, cheap basic new bikes in a similar vain to altec and other brands, if youre leaving them outside thdey wont last but otherwise good enough and simple enough to get the job done. now while teher are a lot of old bikes here this definetly isnt a knock off, its more like just an entry level bike to get around the city that you dont have to look after, and the dutch do not like to look after bikes haha. but you have yourself a proper dutch bike (style and used here just not made.for sure just not from the biggest brands, a lot are made in china now and you pay a hefty premium for batavus, gazelle, cortina etc. any more questions just hit me up

Cool that's great info yes it seems to be exactly like what I saw in the Netherlands as far as basic bikes go .. of course not like a gazelle but I'm enjoying using it around town

Nice bike! Protecting the chain by closing the chain guard will save you some maintenance on the long run.

The frame is a loop frame popularized by the Rayleigh bicycle company of Nottingham, in the early 20th century I have a Batavus omafiets with hand roller brakes & three speed hub gears. Steel loop frame & wheels, consequently very heavy, but I much prefer the riding position.

Loop frame I've never heard that before, good info! I love roller brakes but they are not common or even easy to get here in the us.

The reflectors at the spokes of the wheels are regularly white on the front and red on the back. They’re practically out of date, most new bicycle tires have a reflecting band on both sides, they’re both white. When you don’t use reflecting rubber tires, then you use the red and white spoke reflectors, mostly two on each wheel, opposite to one another so if one reflector disappears behind the chain casing or panniers the other red reflector is still being seen. The reflectors are to make sure you’re being seen from the side if you cross a road or a car is coming from a side street on to a main street where you are cycling in the dark.

I think when you assume that the practical road provisions for cycling are not really in place, and are sparce or at best limited in most places in the United States, it could be argued that there is more of a need for faster, athletic guy oriented bikes, to cope with more traffic conflicts than you'd have in Central Europe. One needs to be cycling agile here whereas not so much there, where bikes like this one can be more widely accepted, and by a wider margin of people. Probably if so, it could be said the same for places like England and Australia. Probably for disk brakes there would also be more of an arguable need for the same reasons.

On the "step though" aspect, besides the appearance of that, being really female oriented, I've found that when they make a frame like that (or simply have it overly angled down without being completely open) like with some brands of e-bikes, they're trying to make it work for more people (women in women's clothes and men in pants both) at once, but are at the same time kind of making it wrong for a man in terms of a single arm lift point, in terms of mounting a chain, in terms of having a water bottle mounted. I have an e-bike where I had to accept that middle of the road style with the horizonal tube, and those things are in play. For a male there's really no upside at all with that tube style. Unless I guess if he happens to be a Scotsman in a kilt! That being said, you clearly did some good work on it and it looks sharp and very functional. I've never been on anything like that. It looks like it would be a fun ride.

1) You don't need a helmet on such a bike. 2) It is a lot easier to stand if you go uphill.

There are many different omafietsen. Moost are cheap ones with Chinese stuff on it and not that great quality. The one you have, costs new just above 300 euro. You can choose out of different colors, brake types, with it or without gears and in steel or aluminium. There are better ones, but they cost a bit more. It is a city bike. It is populair, because low maintenance, cheap and not terrible as it gets stolen. Many children use it for school. That helmet. 😂😂😂😂. As you walk, your risk for a head injury is equal to someone on a bike. Not talking about as you race with a race bike or mountainbike. Only thing you now do, is increasing the risk ad an accident as you ride with other traffic. Cars will give you less space.

Seems to be the worst design possible for battling those Dutch winds.😊😊

The bike means significantly less to efficiency than the rain ponchos and 60l saddlebags. The single speed, now that's the killer with the winds. But you'll notice old ladies just jump off and start walking while the wind blows strong or they cross a bridge then they jump right back on for the down hill. It amazes me how little they care about bikes and bicycle design.

We don’t do 40 mile commutes from some suburb to the next town. We ride a mile, or maybe 4 or 5, in the inner city, which is very doable no matter what. Also, we have actual leg muscles, you know, from riding bikes ;).

@@disklamer Yep! If you ride your bike daily, your body gets used to it. Compare it with obese Americans in pickup trucks, your physics adapt to your mode of transport.

Not at all. In really heavy gusts of wind you can switch to the ligithest gear, but then you'll just fall over. You'll have to power through it anyway and the heavy wheels will help keeping momentum.
