The new one captures more resonance and high frequency. The old one emphasize the middle tone and wood texture of the instrument.

@@Inbalsegevcello Wow~ I get reply from Inval Segev~ What an honor! The sound from the new mic much likes what the audiences hear. The old one give you the sound closing to what the cellist hears but with less resonance from the strings.

This might be a HOT take : for this particular recording I think that the old mics sound better, this is only because as you indicated, the setting is very important. The new mics are just picking up SO much noise, and it almost sounds too close? The old mic has a beautiful and warm and more focused (to my ears at least) I’m sure that will change with the scenery but either way you sound incredible ! 💜

Beautiful playing with either Microphone, the Neumann projects the Cello much better so I personally prefer that.

Nice test! Thank you for sharing! On the Schoeps there’s more air in the sound (more presence from the room) and the DPA is a more focused sound that still sounds natural) Both sound great!

I am curious, which capsules are you using? Depending on which capsules you use the position of the mics will yield considerable different results (even from the same mic).

The new one sounds more free! The old mic under the bridge muffles the sound of the instrument. It is indeed a pity that you have something in front of you so that we can admire you less well while we listen. I am a big fan. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all.

Inbal... you're so cool 😎 !!! Thanks for responding to people in the comments. It made me smile seeing how happy you unexpectedly made them 😊 . Above all, just keep tinkering with the mics. The new ones are definitely objectively more powerful tools, but it can take lots of continuous discovery to get to know the mics and then stumble onto ways to mitigate noise and such.

Thank you Viktor. It's great to get the thoughts of audiophiles like you. My videographer and I are excited to try these mics in my old studio in a few months.

The old mike sounds warmer perhaps because it dampens the sound, or is it as some have mentioned the acoustics of the room are not helping the mikes, it sounds a little harsher. You play wonderfully so both recordings are great!

Thanks so much. The Newmanns bring out the higher frequencies, and so they can sound brighter. It is so interesting to read your comment, everyone hears different things and have different sound preferences. Thanks for watching, Inbal

Interesting! They both do good but different things. The Neumann pair is overall more pleasing to listen to as it reproduces more of the natural room accoustics and gives more transparent descant. Also, nowadays we are so used to stereo sound that we almost demand it. Slightly better over-all quality too. The DPA mic on the other hand as you can expect takes more of the instrument-near sounds, the details of the bow-hair to string contact, more of of the striking of the notes, and more of the woody parts of the cello voice. And less of the room reflections. It could be tempting to try mixing them. You can also bear in mind that a stereo-pair can be set up in quite many ways regarding distances and angles. May I assume you try a setup with one Neumann mic on ech side of you, pointing to the strings a bit higher than the bridge - to keep them out of your sight line. And also the DPA mic slightly mixed in for emphasizing..
@hakansundberg51053 жыл бұрын
About the assumed setup: "Each side of you" - I rather mean in front of you, each about 45 degrees from the center line, each about a meter from you.

Hello and thanks for all your great videos. The KM mics sound much better and would sound even better with a little less compression on them. The compressor takes away the dynamics and brings up all the floor noise like your breathing. I would recommend only letting the compressor or limiter hit the signal very soft if at all and adjust the difference in levels when editing the video. You may want to get a lav mic as well, move the KM84s farther away and record all e tracks. But either way just keep making the videos. :)

Why not try a realist Cello Piezo Pickup? It sits underneath the bridge & produces a very strong sound.

Thanks for this video, both mics sound good because you play great, but in both cases I hear a lot of distortion over mid range, it happens to me with every mic I test, I thought dpa would be the exception but no... its something really easy to fix in post, but as a musician we dont want to fix nothing, just record and share right? which are your favorite strings? are those jargar/spirocore?
@Inbalsegev3 жыл бұрын
Super interesting, thanks Yahel Felipe. I will listen again with head phones for that distortion, which, truth be told, didn't bother me. My videographer does the post production work, he is really an image guy, not a sound guy, but I think he does a great job. We are experimenting and trying to improve every time. Thanks so much for writing. Inbal.
@yahelfelipe3 жыл бұрын
@@Inbalsegev thanks to you, you are doing an amazing contribution for everyone. If you want to keep experimenting on sound, try with your post guy to use parametric eq and remove 2 or 3db (not too much) in the middle range, a smooth curve something between 800 - 1k hz ... that could make some space in the mix for low register of the cello also high freqs get cleaner. Little details that maybe cant be heard in regular headphones, but having studio monitors can be helpful if you are planning to make an album, ep or something.

I would want to hear just one of the KSMs (in mono) for a fair comparison.
@Inbalsegevcello3 жыл бұрын
True, that is not a fair comparison, but the dpa is meant to be sitting on the instrument and the Newmans are not
@teodorstromberg45563 жыл бұрын
The first mics capture the acoustics of the room as well, which I think can give a great sound, but for that you need the right room / surroundings. In your suite no.6 allemande video for example, you hear the acoustics of the room and it sounds better for it, but here I think the second mic mounted on the cello sounds better, even though it's not as rich. It's probably more forgiving to use. Also, someone else mentioned it, but with headphones the inconsistent left/right audio balance is quite distracting with the new mics.

The old mic had almost no room effect, and decreased high frequency. The new setup has greatly increased high frequency, and a lot of room echo. If that could be adjusted downward, I like the new mics better. Thanks for posting this test!

@notacpu53213 жыл бұрын
Second is better. The first picks up too much noise and the left/right is distracting with headphones. Take this with a grain of salt because youtube has terrible audio compression. I commented that my cello was coming on another video and it's coming along nicely. Do you have any books that you would recommend? I'm currently using Diran Alexanians and Dotzauer's Violoncellschule.
@Inbalsegevcello3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. Most people prefer the Newmanns but I think the mics need to be used for different situations and in a way the DPA gives a more honest representation of the sound because it doesn’t pick up the room sound. In terms of books- there are so many! But try the Duport etudes they are great.

There is definately more ambient sound with the Neumanns, and yep, could be because of the room acoustics. You can hear more of "you" with them as well, for example, the deep breaths you take to prepare for vigorous music. The DMA is very concentrated on the cello, very little ambient sound, but, the sound itself is dampened compared to the Neumann mics. I suppose the choice is one of environment... my guess is that a sound engineer would rather work with the Neumanns and tune both the room and the recording.
@Inbalsegev3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. Yes, sound engineers definitely prefer the Newmanns. Also, because they are two, vs the one DPA.

On my smartphone I'm not getting any difference. I'm trying to work out sound reprocessing myself including audio interface and preamps and... It's a bit unnerving! Should I feel a Mic under the bridge allows me to 'mumble'? vs. a room mic which encourages me to project?
@Inbalsegevcello3 жыл бұрын
Hi FredDee, I think you described it pretty succinctly. The DPA allows you to mumble and with the further mics you can project more. You will be able to hear the differences with earphones, even on the iPhone but mostly on my desktop the difference is huge.

What is the old one? What if I were to mix it with something like the new ones?
@Inbalsegev3 жыл бұрын
The old mic is a DPA cello mic. I am not an expert but I know that engineers use three mics even when there is only one instrument to record, so that will be interesting. Thanks for watching. Inbal
