Hey, local cheap artist here, recently dollar tree has been selling a mini prang watercolor set, very small but still pretty nice, not too chalky and a great starting point for beginners I think!!
@RebelUnicornCrafts6 ай бұрын
Prang is a great budget set! I don't think I've seen their sets at dollar tree, but I'll have to keep an eye out. I do list their 8 and 16 color sets on my supply guide as budget recommendations😊

Hey thanks for recommending this! I'm a student on a budget, but I really want to get into watercolor, so I will definitely look for these. I just love Dollar trees craft section!
@DeborahPreussАй бұрын
I've tested a number of budget sets and Prang's the best. Colours are strong and vibrant! The way they behave, I suspect they contain dyes, so who knkws how lightfast they are. But for a sketchbook, or someone just exploring whether they like watercolour, they are a fun starting point 👍

I started my watercolour journey with pans like these, probably a 12 colour set for about $25nzd, and for the longest time i thought i couldnt paint! They would dry so chalky and wouldnt move nicely. After my mother died i had a bit of money and was sad so decided to try a WN palette. At about $120nzd it was a JUMP but i was seriously joy seeking! Suddenly my pictures weren't demoralizingly awful! It was a starter palette so i could mix almost anything i needed (eventually invested in a CMY flavoured palette with some umber and sienna and then REALLY could make whatever i wanted. I guess thats what a printing background does to you.) It felt nice to paint, used less paint, and the results actually allowed me to see that i was improving. I think perhaps its easier to work with the cheaper paints once you have worked with more expensive ones so you know how the colours should work. I wish access to quality art supplies was easier for everyone. The benefits to mental health are immeasurable.

I know exactly what you mean. Some sets can be great of various price points can be great, but the ones that aren't and are soo bad can deter you so much. I'm glad that you found a set that helped bring you some joy. My condolences for your mother's passing.

Glad you shared this…I was wondering how someone who wanted to start would feel with the cheap quality supplies. I imagined exactly that…such poor results, one would blame themselves. I’m a beginner, and can afford medium range cost materials, but even at that price point, there will be definite differences in quality and performance. Happy painting everyone! So grateful for the many content creators who share their experience and wisdom to all❤

I’ve just bought a set of water (42 I think!) paints from temu with a metal palette & it’s so good! I gave them a whirl as they were fairly cheap but the pigment is so strong & it comes with a & very good & handy water brush. The metallics weren’t great though. They also sell a set of neons & they’re brilliant too!

I’d use mid-level paints even to start… I’d be frustrated if they didn’t work well or chip! Nope. Spend a bit of money & dive in. Always beautiful work! I shared your “Autumn Leaves” & “Jack-o-Lanterns” videos with my Mama and sis when I visited them last week!

I bought a set of 12 Royal & Langnickel watercolor tube paints for a reasonable price and I've been enjoying them. They are different than the travel pallet I had previously plus I bought some 140# paper which is so much better than art paper. I cut it into 4 so I'm getting 200 sheets instead of 50. I was never taught a proper way to use watercolor so this is a fun new experience 😊 if I get reasonably good I'll try some more expensive paints and paper. I'm trying to find my style because I can copy someone else but it isn't mine 😊🎨🖌️
@RebelUnicornCrafts14 күн бұрын
I still don’t think I’ve found a single ‘style’ for myself either, just paint what makes you happy.

i was trying to start with cheap watercolors and was starting to get really frustrated. A friend gifted me a small Winsor and Newton palette. And it made all the difference because the colours did what they were supposed to, it wasnt that i was useless. So I would say that new people should start with a small good palette. Thank you very much for this video. Is makes so much sense
@RebelUnicornCrafts5 ай бұрын
You're definitely not useless and I'm glad you see that. I can see why some want to start small, especially if they aren't sure if the spark will fizzle within a week, but even a little bit nicer paints can certainly make a huge difference.

My dollar tree doesn't carry these. I thought I wasn't going to find the $1.25 one but I did on the crafts aisle. Excited to try them out. I'm a total newbie at watercolor so that's why I got the dollar tree ones.

Winsor and newton cotman are great watercolors for beginners. Fair price, W&N professional watercolor half pans are more expensive than professional tubes though.
@still_your_zelda Жыл бұрын
The dollar tree near me just added a $3-5 section (🤦♀️) a month ago so you might be able to find it over the next few years. They don’t really change inventory that often, or change up the variety either, so you’d likely be able to find soon.
@amandamccallum67969 күн бұрын
The Dollarama in Canada has something called Artist's series cheap supplies, and they have basic watercolour paint in tubes. I would be interested to see how they work.
@RebelUnicornCrafts5 күн бұрын
I haven't found a cheap set of tube paints to be worth it, yet. Easier to get something usable in a dry pan if you go budget, in my experience.

New to your channel and watercolor so catching up on your videos. Have you tested Fine Touch watercolors from Hobby Lobby? and also, what are you thoughts on mixing student grade with artist grade paints? Thanks
@RebelUnicornCrafts5 ай бұрын
I don’t recall if I’ve played with that particular palette, but I do vary the ‘level’ of my paints in my palette and when I’m mixing colors. I wouldn’t mix a super budget palette like crayola colors with my QoR colors, for example, but I’ve had some great success with the Michael’s store brand (Artist’s loft) color tubes. Some of the midrange colors have more variety in quality between colors, but if you like a color and it works well for you, I’d absolutely use it.
@KMercure10 ай бұрын
I definitely would not use these paints myself (the Meesdn paints are as low as I go) but I’d definitely use them with a younger child who wants to paint with me..

Agree, great for kids or maybe someone just starting to dabble and scared to invest in themselves a little bit, but probably not for long term

I've used cheap crappy watercolors of many types. With them, it is frustrating to try techniques from demonstrations (with better sets) and find the cheap sets don't behave the way they "should". That said, you can still be creative and work with them, just with (severe) limitations. Because of this, I'd only recommend this set for young children, or older children who are just messing around, not interested in learning techniques.
@RebelUnicornCrafts Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Sometimes people need a set to dip their toe in and don't necessarily want to drop $40+ on a fancy set or then feel they shouldn't 'waste' them because they're still learning. There's some really bad sets out there, but often the best supply is one someone will use 😊
@appleknocker569 ай бұрын
Took a few sets but when they either have a jelly lay down look or that chalk look now won’t get them! Don’t have to get most expensive but many decent brands than frustrate yourself with these kinds. Kids maybe.

So I randomly KZbin’d watercolor paints cuz I’ve been seeing that exact pallet and wanted to know if it was worth it! I wanna experiment with watercolors so I really appreciate your video and the time you took to do the swatches with comparison and even the painting at the end! I know nothing about watercolor painting and was able to keep up with what you were saying so I love that! I think ima give it a go to see if it’s for me hahah thanks so much! I def subscribed ! 🤗
