I've had one of these for about a year now, easiest system I've used. Noticed a couple of things while you were testing it: 1. I learned to alternate the side of the blade between strokes. It will heat the blade somewhat so alternating it will keep the heat evenly along the knife. 2. the inch per second is easy enough- 7" blade should take 7 seconds per pass 3. Be careful with the roller guide. It can actually cause the edge to "burr" more if you put too much pressure on it as you pull the knife thru. 4. Replacement belts are sold as a kit. I've found them for under $20 at my local bigbox fishing store 5. Follow the grit sizes, don't jump from Medium to the Polishing one. You want to make sure the knife blade is even and ground correctly all along the blade. You can damage a belt this way. Just a few tips I've leaned using it. Have fun and enjoy! PS I this comment happens to win. Find a Local Military Veteran and gift it to them with my thanks for their service!!!!

Normally I a product test video doesn't make me stop in my tracks but this one did simply because it addressed a problem I have had for years. I have been searching for a knife sharpener that gets me a razor sharp edge, with no fuss and a minimum setup. I have tried everything and nothing gave me any satisfaction. Either a sharpener was too expensive, too difficult to get up easily or just didn't result in a devilishly sharp edge. Then I saw this and it checked all the boxes. It was easy. Setup was no hassle and the results were exactly what I have wanted for years but could not get. So I ordered one right away. I didn't regret it. I got it last night and within just a few minutes of unboxing I had two EDC knives sharpened to a wicked edge with zero hassle. I've been telling every co-worker who will listen about it today and showing them the edge on my knife. Thanks for this. Not many products are life changing but this one ranks right up there on top.

I purchased one of these from Cabela's about 2 years ago and have never looked back. I'm seriously happy with how this unit sharpens all my knives. You can also get the replacement belts from fleaBay for a fraction of the price from Cabela's...... I've used this unit thousands of times as I'm hard as hell on my Gerber pocket knife (cutting wires, belts, hoses, prying etc etc) and this little gem brings my knife back to perfect every time.

There's no risk. Cutco has a lifetime sharpness guaranty. If... Let's do be honest here... When any Cutco knife dulls, you can return it to the factory to have it professionally resharpened to factory specs. Or at least they did 30 yrs ago when I was selling them... Or trying to. They were helaciously expensive back then and I doubt they've gotten any less so.

@Anuel Jackson I'm well aware that the straight edge models of their knives can be hand sharpened by anyone who knows what they're doing. That wasnt the point. The point was, there's no risk of "ruining" a knife which carries a lifetime warranty. Furthermore, I wonder how well the sharpener would sharpen one of the knives with Cutco's proprietarily shaped, serrated "Double D" edged knives.

I've been using this (Ken Onion edition) for a little over 3 years now & absolutely love it. Everything from my utility & shear blades, S35VN EDC's (typically difficult to sharpen), to my Shun kitchen knives get amazing edges on them from this thing. I love the 22.5° setting on it for EDC blades. I will say with the very hard steel of my Shun knives I do get a better edge using stones because of how flat the angle is but that obviously takes a MUCH greater amount of time (and the skill needed). The belts for this make light work of repairing damaged edges as well.

Be careful to not let the blade set for a second when you start your stroke as you will end up with a divot where you let the blade rest. Also, DO NOT pull the blade all the way through the belt! Stop when the tip is halfway across the belt so you don't mess up the tip of the blade.

I love mine, I get through all the kitchen knives in around 45 minutes going through all the belts, the edge holds up well, setup and clean up is quick. Good results and easy process means this tool will get used rather than considered a bother. I’d suggest picking up a lower grit belt to make putting that initial shape on the edge faster and more economically than blowing through the 120, I believe I grabbed a 80 grit that fits.

I have the version before this Ken Onion version, I must say this new version has some upgrade features that I wish I have. The angle dialer is great, the blade roller guide is also very handy, the variable speed with lock is excellent. So far I have used mine for hunting knives and EDC knives. I have not tried on my Japanese chef knife yet because it is sharpened from the factory about 8 to 12 degrees per side. I have not found anything can do such a steep angle except freehand with a wet stone. Anything else the Work Sharp sharpener is quick and easy to use.

I have this and use it to re-profile my blades to 15-17.5 degrees. Then use a Sharpmaker to create a 20 degree micro-bevel. Works well. But, like you I use to pause for half a second when I first start the belt before pulling the knife along the belt....this will soon create a recurve at the ricasso. Wicked Coyote Works extremely well but you have to follow directions and not spend a lot of time on one belt. If you don’t stop and start the machine as directed you will round the tip off and if you don’t do just a few passes until you get a bur you will burn through the metal before you know it. Also keep a bucket of water handy to cool the blade.

Neat to see one of these in action. I can see it being great for yard tools. Wonder how well it would work for recurved blades? I legitimately enjoy hand sharpening knives, I find it therapeutic, so I doubt it would get me to give up my whetstones.
@JackDSRS
@JackDSRS 5 жыл бұрын
There's a special way to sharpen recurved, as there is for gut hooks, serrated, scissors, tools and single sided blades. Directions come in the box, and the manufacturer has several vids. Ken Onion is a custom knifemaker who designed the model used in this video to work with pretty much everything. Its just been a great toy for me. I kept my whetstones for sentimental reasons, but pitched every other crappy sharpening gizmo I've tried over the years. Oh, kept the ceramic rods because they look nice out at Thanksgiving. Don't use them, but they look nice and fancy.

Thank you for this quite revealing demonstration Wranglerstar. I had this particular tool on my wish list for some time but was hesitant as I did not know whether it could get knifes VERY sharp, whether heat build up would be an issue and also how noisy it would be (which now seems quite okay compared to the noise of a drill or workbench). This video demonstrated all these things by someone who had no experience with it before (like me). Time to make savings for it. It is not too expensive compared to other quality power sharpeners, but still money I'll have yet to earn.

Ideal setup would be to buy 4-5 of them so you never have to change belts and just work down it like an assembly line. If you are starting out cheap, just get one grinder. @@Vicandiers If you are trying to start a knife sharpening business, you will quickly out work this thing. Its just not made for that. Learning curve aint no thing. Its pretty simple, just hold the knife at an angle. Get the 1x30 and practice. You will get great results and you will be able to do it at a pace that allows you to actually make money.

One thing about this sharpener, when you first drop the knife down onto the belt and then start to pull back, the blade is exposed to the belt for a longer period of time, after a few sharpenings, I noticed that I was losing material at the end of the blade. You have to make very sure you do not hesitate at the beginning of the stroke or you will start to notch the blades.

I was watching a demonstration video made by Worksharp and they say to put the knife into position BEFORE pulling the trigger and then pull the trigger while simultaneously pulling the knife back. This prevents areas that can get gouged while getting the blade into position. At the point where the tip of the knife is midpoint on the abrasive belt, you should release the trigger and stop knife movement at the same time. They say that this prevents the tip from getting rounded over when it clears the edge of the belt. Thanks for the review, I’ve been contemplating purchasing one, now I’m convinced.

A good tip for using one of these with highly polished or pretty knives is to put masking tape on the blade where it contacts the guide or the grit powder will leave parallel scratches along the length. Other than that this sharpener is one of the most flexible out there that doesn't potentially ruin your knife if you're sloppy. Just don't go crazy at high speed on the coarse belt and avoid rounding your tip!

I didn't buy the Ken Onion, but I have the original one, I used to use the guide, but I started free handing it and i've found it that I have WAY better results free-handing it. I also use a leather strop at the end, I work as a production butcher, I need a sharp knife and for it to more importantly KEEP it's edge, I am extremely pleased how the convex edge keeps it's edged.

I was looking for the toupe link, I think I've been had. :>O Just for the record, you don't get a burr because on one side the belt is going down, and on the other side it is going up. Ken's surname is pronounced O-n'eye-on. If you fix the machine down with a clamp, you can use two hands to steady the knife blade. It is a good sharpening system and they do an extension to grind knife blades.
@billwyko2392
@billwyko2392 2 жыл бұрын
A point to be made. If your blade does not have a convex grind, you should do 10 strokes on one side until you feel a burr, then do 10 on the other side and then 1 or 2 on either side to finish up. You will think you can cut frog hair 4 ways.
