When you do your resistance check, I would make sure that ALL of your devices or equipment is disconnected, otherwise you may be reading the resistance through said device and that’s why you’re getting continuity through your meter at the panel.

Absolutely. I think I mentioned that I'd disconnected everything...but if I missed that, it was by mistake. Anything connected will cause a false reading and/or could be damaged.

If you measure from a hot lead to ground (like you are doing) it can read almost a short if connected to a light bulb (as example) in the bus and the light switch was in the "on" position. But you are 100% right -- AC and DC wiring needs to be checked stem to stern. Thanks for keeping us and the owners posted on progress.
@badgerpa93 жыл бұрын
You should never have voltage or a direct connection from ground to "hot" positive, the ground wire is a safety ground, the neutral and positive carry the voltage. I am not trying to nitpick I think you just meant neutral but others may be confused reading this. The difference in AC and DC voltage confuses many, just when they think they understand it and then it changes.

When you do an insulation test (megga test) you need to make sure all appliances or devices (fridge, cook top, water heater, A/C unit etc) are disconnected or unplugged from the circuits being tested. Other wise you will get a false short circuit reading , plus if you happen to test at 1kV or 5kV you may damage any electronics in thoses appliances. In the instance of a MEN system, earth and neutral will be bonded somewhere and give a short cct result. The main requirement is that there is an open cct between active and neutral and that the earth conductor has an impeadance that is
@allthethingswedo2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I did briefly mention that I checked to make sure nothing was connected...because you only want to check the insulation integrity. But I didn't go into depth on that, so thanks for expanding on it. In this case, there should not have been any pathway or bonding between the neutral or ground. That shouldn't happen in this panel or the branch circuits.

Further I have a main breaker that will cut off both live and neutral in the event of a leak to earth. All the 12v wiring passes in conduit underneath the bus with only short lengths inside, leading straight up to lights/USB sockets/12v sockets.

As a EU citizen and also as a technician I can't understand why in the US they still use metal conduits and cabinets on electrical installations...Here for more than 40 years that metal is out of any electric installation. Only PVC or other plastic materials are allowed and according to the EU electrical code.
@badgerpa93 жыл бұрын
The metal box is grounded to the ground lead for safety, the BX or armored cable used is required in some places as protection from rodents and other things. The distribution box installed in this is not really an ideal box to use, it is more for industry to use for a distribution panel by equipment or like a hot tub. They should really have a box that has an easy to understand main breaker that stands out from the other breakers so it is safer and simple. In some cities the local code requires all power runs in some type of metal conduit, at least a few years ago they still did.
@TheBigChill13 жыл бұрын
@@badgerpa9 Yup...We used to have that same system...until 40 years ago... Now every electrical equipment box is non metallic for obvious reasons... Anyway...It's a known thing the Electric norms and systems in the US a very outdated...No wonder the massive blackouts and malfunctions on their network.
@TheBigChill13 жыл бұрын

@badgerpa93 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigChill1 The electric is not the same in all EU countries. Germany is different from most places, I cannot think of all of them but there are differences. In the USA often different local codes vary by local needs, a water line in Florida could be safe a foot under ground but in the MIdwest like Wisconsin it needs to be 5-6 feet (2 meters) underground for frost protection. Some places have a lot of rats like Chicago and New York so having wiring in conduit keeps it safer than romex. I agree with you the bus is a mess and any time code is consistent is great but sometimes it needs to be different for the location.

This is so painful to watch. There is just SO MUCH wrong with that build that just stripping it all out and starting over would be so much more productive. There is a fair amount of quality product there that could be reused if it was just redone correctly. Sadly, with the lack of appliable code to the build, what could you really hope to accomplish by suing the obviously inept conversion company? As the bus does not permanently attach to the grid, the National Electrical Code simply becomes a "guideline", rather than a requirement. Hate to see how these poor people were scammed.
