"Dakota fire pit is great at not being detected" Dakota Fire Pit: *Immediately leaps five feet in the air*
@xjunkxyrdxdog894 жыл бұрын
He over loaded the pit. Someone trying to hide wouldn't use as much fuel at once. You would normally pile the excavated earth around the hole. Finally, you would choose a location thats at least partially obstructed. The main benefit comes from the near total lack of smoke, not hidden light. The high airflow and temperature allows the fuel to be burned more completely resulting in a very light smoke. In the great plains a smokey fire would be visible over the horizon.
@DanielTorres-vu3gt4 жыл бұрын

one good example of a more discreet dakota fire pit is in the Steve Wallis video where he goes camping along the side of a river. He builds a dakota fire pit and partially covers it so, while he still has heat, the light and smoke are less noticeable.

Hey, this is a topic I'm very experienced with! I've made more Dakota fire pits than I can remember. I've made them in the summer and winter, even in snow. The pit Jason made is hilariously massive. He basically just dug a normal fire pit with a stone over part of it. The order of timber really doesn't matter at all, just do what is consistent for you. Ill explain how I make mine and you can take it for what it's worth First, you get your titanium camp spoon from your mess kit, and your pot. Dig with the spoon to make a cylinder shaped hole that your pot fits on, but doesn't fall it. The hole should be up to your elbow for depth. Then you start the air hole. You can make it upwind, but it doesn't matter. Once the fire starts, air will be SUCKED into the hole. You start the air hole about 4 or 5 inches away, and angle it so it reaches to the bottom of the fire hole. You also dig the air hole with your spoon, and you make it as small in diameter as you can comfortably do, usually just enough to fit your fist in. Then your pour some calcium carbide into the bottom of the fire hole (pick it up at army surplus). If it's summer, pour a few ounces of water in the fire hole, winter toss in snow. Throw some kindling in followed by match or sparks. The gas from the wet calcium carbide will ignite and basically impossible to extinguish. After you have coals and air audibly is being sucked into the hole, you set your pot on to cook. This is the type of fire you run when fire isn't allowed. Also make sure you clear brush a foot around the opening, unlike these guys did lol

I hope everyone realizes that the editing on this show (specifically, all of those little subtitles) are way more work than they first appear. For what is on screen for only about a second or two, the editor is probably spending the better part of an hour if it's even a little bit graphical. But also, editing something where you really have to pay attention to the content and then match stuff to it uses so much of your brain, and it's not the same as your editing brain. IDK, I've been an amateur editor for the last 15 years or so and whenever I notice how much work the editor does on this channel I wanna give a shoutout. Pay them more, Brian!
@nymalous34284 жыл бұрын
I try to thank the editors in my comments. Unfortunately, good editing is usually not very noticeable (it's kind of the point). On this channel, the editing is usually great. In editing my own videos (very infrequently, but starting way back in 2002/2003) I have found what you said to be very true. (Editors: put what you want on your pizza!)
@alwaysfallingshort4 жыл бұрын
@Tristan Burke Oh definitely (and that probably took a bit of work). I just mean when they add things like the graphics from wikipedia articles, he often does some photoshop work on them. Plus even adding all of those templates is time consuming, sometimes something doesn't look right and you have to manually tweak it.

"We're going to have to get the hose" You've missed a feature of the Dakota fire pit... when you dig the pit, you should pile up the excavated material around the rim of the hole. This further shields the fuel from the wind, and allows you to quickly extinguish the fire by smothering it.

*INFO FOR READERS:* hi, it actually build these at festivals. 1. The ones we do are dig 2x pits the size of your thy ... about 1.5ft deep by 0.5 wide. 2. Dig the holes straight down, next to each other. 3. Once they are ready, put your hand all the way down and poke a hole through to the other chamber lying next to it. 4. Put wood and build a fire in first chamber. >The draft will come into the top of the fire >goes through the wood >through the hole at bottom and the flames exit via the second chamber 5. whole purpose is to have a smokeless fire, burning the wood gas as it goes. 6. The second chamber where the flames exit is where you cook at the surface. all the best

In a wind, I find the teepee isn't the best way to start a fire. Try a "log cabin" style fire - lay the kindling down in that kind of pattern, you want to save your largest kindling, but build it large to small. Put your firestarter in the middle, then build a roof from larger kindling you set aside. Place one or two fuel logs on the top. When it gets going the cabin will collapse, and you want the logs to land in the middle of the fire, so position them accordingly (that does take practice, try placing them on after the kindling has caught). This keeps the starter from blowing around, while protecting it from the wind a bit better. The roof and small kindling help to trap the hot air against the easier-to-light twigs. And, in the wind especially, once the walls have caught, the bigger gaps near the bottom function similarly to the fire pit, feeding oxygen to the flames above them

I like how you've tested ancient techniques and then used a blowtorch to start the fire 😂 with the exposed fire during windy conditions it would have been fairly impossible to start anything with old methods. The Dakota firepit on the other hand was often used as an underground cooking oven: once obtained the burning ashes you put your meat wrapped in something (aluminium nowadays) on top of them, then bury everything and come back after 5 to 8 hours. The only thing about the Dakota fire pit is some places you can't build them because of the trees around the area, the roots spread wide and flat so they can easily catch fire under the ground. hours after the fire is out in the pit, the roots are still smoldering which can cause forest fires. If you try this fire tactic, make sure to read about the trees and plants in the area so you dont cause a major incident.
