When I was a teen, we'd cut the heads off of wood matches, and cut up the striking strip in little squares, cut open a tennis ball, fill it with the match heads and striking squares, crazy glue the tennis ball back up, and then whip it at a wall to until it would explode. It would make a hell of a loud bang. Anarchist Cookbook, good times.

Half the reason the Anarchist's Cookbook has been banned in so many places over the years isn't because of the recipes (which can be found in any chemistry textbook), but because the author completely forgot to include any safety procedures, and would-be bombmakers who try to follow the book's advice are more likely to end up short a few fingers than actually overthrowing anything.

I don’t know much about this substance. That being said, here’s my idea. Make the powder, get two small coins (I would use Aussie 5 cent pieces), a slingshot, and tape. Put a good dollop of the mix onto one coin and sandwich it with the other coin, secure all around with tape as tight as you can. Launch at a relatively solid surface (concrete, metal, etc) and hope for the best.
@BuckHelton4 жыл бұрын
Grant Thompson did this with blowgun darts (homemade, as was the blowgun) and showed how to do it properly. The problem here is the striker surface is not being shaved off with a razor, but rather scraped with a scissors edge which is not nearly sharp enough. The 2-1 ratio is correct, but there's far too much foreign matter getting into the phosphorus here

Fun fact: matches used to be made of red phosphorus, but since phosphorus is really volatile, the matches would often light up on their own inside the box by just the friction with the other matches alone, and since people would often carry the matchbox in their pocket or purse, accidents were frequent, that's why they made the mixture less volatile and took the phosphorus in the matches and put it on the box instead, in a much smaller quantity, now the matches won't light with just friction anymore.

So, "MR teaching how to make impact explosives". Alternatively, "MR teaches how to make primers for homemade ammunitions". 18:56 Seems like the mixture should be compacted first. Sure, I commented as a joke, but primers in center-fire cartridges have quite compacted powders in them. It also helps that the anvil's structure makes it so that when then pin hits the primer, all force is concentrated in an insanely small area. This also brings the idea that sticking a needle out of a nerf dart's point would help. Among many reasons you not only focus a lot of pressure on a point the needle will hit in the direction of it's axis, which transfers a lot of energy, even at low velocities (though a modded nerf blaster would also help).
@Tri_Nitro4 жыл бұрын
Cap guns and cap n' ball firearms also have their equivalent of anvil (either a metal bolt or a nipple you put the cap on). Concentrating the energy of hammer in one small space would probably work the best
@KalRandom4 жыл бұрын
Instead of needle a thumbtack?
@acrobaticalpaca66754 жыл бұрын
Good thinking with the compacting and the pin thing. I think a needle in the conventional sense would be awkward to keep upright. The magnets out of those old Magnetix toys could work well (the small cylindrical ones not the spherical ones). You could get one of the mega blasters (such as the one you put an awesome paint job on) and an adaptor (outofdarts.com/products/worker-6-piece-mega-elite-dart-adapter) to get it to shoot regular darts with the force of the larger mega darts. Then get a better spring and seals and all that. The coin idea was good for hardness but you may need more mass so it has momentum when it hits. You could remove the orange tip completely then stick a stack of coins on the end in its place. I think shooting a stack of coins out of a blow gun with the payload on the end might work well. As far as getting the powder fine you could get a herb grinder or just spend more time with the mortar and pestle. With the bottle try grinding across the circumference then striking down the length. Superb video, really wanna see this work.
@romeotango55974 жыл бұрын
A needle probably wouldn’t have the surface area needed. Firing pins generally have a thicker striking face, maybe around the side of the head of a brad nail. This ensures a lot of force in a small area without being so small it doesn’t just stab through the primer without impacting on the primer.
@spectre66124 жыл бұрын

Actually you use asprin Here is the method This procedure involves dissolving the acetylsalicylic acid in warm sulfuric acid and adding sodium or potassium nitrate which nitrates the purified aspirin and the whole mixture drowned in water and filtered to obtain the final product. This explosive is called trinitrophenol. Care should be taken to ensure that this explosive is stored in glass containers. Picric acid will form dangerous salts when allowed to contact all metals exept tin and aluminum. These salts are primary explosive and are super sensitive. They also will cause the detonation of the picric acid. To make picric acid obtain some aspirin. The cheaper brands work best but buffered brands should be avoided. Powder these tablets to a fine consistancy. To extract the acetylsalicylic acid from this powder place this powder in methyl alcohol and stir vigorously. Not all of the powder will dissolve. Filter this powder out of the alcohol. Again wash this powder that was filtered out of the alcohol with more alcohol but with a lesser amount than the first extraction. Again filter the remaining powder out of the alcohol. Combine the now clear alcohol and allow it to evaporate in a pyrex dish. When the alcohol has evaporated there will be a surprising amount of crystals in the bottom of the pyrex dish. Take fourty grams of these purified acetylsalicylic acid crystals and dissolve them in 150 ml. of sulfuric acid (98%, specify gravity 1.8) and heat to dissolve all the crystals. This heating can be done in a common electric frying pan with the thermostat set on 150 deg. F. and filled with a good cooking oil. When all the crystals have dissolved in the sulfuric acid take the beaker, that you’ve done all this dissolving in (600 ml.), out of the oil bath. This next step will need to be done with a very good ventilation system (it is a good idea to do any chemistry work such as the whole procedure and any procedure on this disk with good ventilation or outside). Slowly start adding 58 g. of sodium nitrate or 77 g. of potassium nitrate to te acid mixture in the beaker very slowly in small portions with vigorous stirring. A red gas (nitrogen trioxide) will be formed and this should be avoided. The mixture is likely to foam up and the addition should be stopped until the foaming goes down to prevent the overflow of the acid mixture in the beaker. When the sodium or potassium nitrate has been added the mixture is allowed to cool somewhat (30- 40 deg. C.). The solution should then be dumped slowly into twice it’s volume of crushed ice and water. The brilliant yellow crystals will form in the water. These should be filtered out and placed in 200 ml. of boiling distilled water. This water is allowed to cool and then the crystals are then filtered out of the water. These crystals are a very, very pure trinitrophenol. These crystals are then placed in a pyrex dish and places in an oil bath and heated to 80 deg. C. and held there for 2 hours. This temperature is best maintained and checked with a thermometer. The crystals are then powdered in small quantities to a face powder consistency. These powdered crystals are then mixed with 10% by weight wax and 5% vaseline which are heated to melting temperature and poured into the crystals. The mixing is best done by kneading together with gloved hands. This explosive should have a useful plsticity range of 0-40 deg. C.. The detonation velocity should be around 7000 m/sec.. It is toxic to handle but simply made from common ingredients and is suitable for most demolition work requiring a moderately high detonation velocity. It is very suitable for shaped charges and some steel cutting charges. It is not as good an explosive as C-4 or other R.D.X. based explosives but it is much easier to make. Again this explosive is very toxic and should be treated with great care. Avoid handling bare-handed, breathing dust and fumes, avoid any chance of ingestion. After utensils are used for the manufacture of this explosive retire them from the kitchen as the chance of poisoning is not worth the risk. This explosive, if manufactured as above, should be safe in storage but with any homemade explosive storage is not recomended and explosives should be made up as needed.

There's a similar experiment but with a tin box filled with strike anywhere match heads and a nail with a match head taped against the point, going through the top of the box so as that sudden weight (like dropping a rock on it) will nail the match head and ignite the rest within the box.

The mixture between two quarters works better, when you tape them do not squeeze too much and tape them perpendicular to the bigger flat side of the coins. In order for the mixture to ignite there should be movement between the two powders, the same principle when you slide the match against the strip. Good luck

Use two thumbtacks... Cut the metal pin off the inside of one to make a concave metal surface, and then fill it with the mixture. Place a second one behind it and secure the two by rolling the edges in either rubber glue or elmers. Place the thumbtack that has it's pin still attached into the head of a nerf dart and fire. Ah, also... Mixing the mixture is easier if you use water to make a paste. It will also make the application easier, and you may be able to just "glue" the two caps together with the mixture.

i can recommend that you put a few drops of water in when mixing the two powders, and then slowly grinding with a spoon. it wont ignite when wet, and you can get it mixed together very well, forming a thick sludge, that can be "glued" onto whatever. when dried, its quite solid, and of course, explosive again. ive made explosive pellets, and targets, whatnot, work great!
@FireheartIndustries4 жыл бұрын
watch the King of Random video on "thunder caps" to see how to do this more safely and potentially more reliably. As for making it work with Nerf darts, get some brass thumbtacks (the ones that are relatively flush to the surface once pushed in), glue one in place (pointy side into the dart) and use a small sticker to place the mixture onto the thumbtack-tipped dart. If you need to, cut small notches into the edges of the sticker so it rests nicely against the rounded tip of the dart, rather than folding on itself. This should give you a suitably hard surface to hit against hard targets such as cinder blocks, concrete, metal, etc. As always, use hearing protection, safety glasses, and gloves. You already had to reset the injury counter once. (ALSO, FOR ANYONE WHO GETS THE IDEA TO TRY MAKING YOUR OWN EXPLOSIVE NERF DARTS, Armstrong's mixture is a highly dangerous compound and may cause more than hearing loss if handled improperly. Making explosive projectiles should NOT be tried at home, and depending on local laws, may even be ILLEGAL! Always check your local laws before trying anything like this!)
@zapruderfilmforcriterion94034 жыл бұрын
If someone decides to put a highly explosive material into a projectile object, I don't think they are too worried about local laws at that point.

Part of me has always wanted to use Armstrong’s mixture to make Gambit style throwing cards, but because of how dangerous the mixture is and the fact that I’d only really be able to use them outside on a brick wall to mitigate any damage to property, I’ve opted against it.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but: -nerf blasters stock fire @ 75ft/s I believe things that would improve your chances of being able to use a blaster to ignite one of those would be: - modify the blaster (properly modded blasters can reach upwards of 300ft/s) -use harder tipped darts which you guys mentioned. (hard tips used by the community are commonly refered to as fvjs and voberries. There are a lot of 3d printed spring powered blaster designs that you could use that are open source or you could buy a drop in kit for an existing blaster which would get you to around 175ft/s for a drop in kit depending on the blaster) (The easiest way to achieve a higher velocity of fire would be taking the massive nerf water gun and put a barrel in it so it can fire a dart. (those modded with only the barrel hit over 400ft/s and are ban from most events)) I don't remember the name of the water gun sorry. I probably should've also started with this way 😂 Great video guys! -Joe

This reminds me of a toy I had as a child. It was just a little plastic dart, like the kind you'd throw (hopefully at a dartboard) in a bar, except the sharp pin had been replaced by a blunt metal peg exactly the diameter to fit a plastic cap (as in, "cap gun") over the tip. Then there'd be a little plastic sleeve that went over the top to hold the cap in place, and I'd throw it at stuff and the force of impact would make the cap go "bang" and I'd have to figure out where the plastic sleeve flew off to so I could use it again.

"engineering" an idea to fix the problem they were having, just as an idea,either a paper package with pennies sandwiching the payload,and all enveloped in a little paper wad,or maybe the Armstrong mixture just in a a similar envelope or wad of paper,mixed with large grain sand...maybe salt,salt and fire is never a bad idea.

In my neighbourhood we do this all the time. Next time, make like a little sachet with of foil paper and put the mixture inside. Ensuring the foil is flat, whack the contraption with a hammer and you will get a bang. You can even get a bang with just match heads. For the best results, place the foil wrap on a hard surface and hit it with a flat hammer.

dont wanna end on a list so not gonna detail the chemical side but yes definately solvable. "safe" recommendations include making sure your Nerf is modded, and then place a thumbtack dead centre through the head. The thumbtacks curved head is aerodynamic and is a hard surface. Yes, finer milled powders are more effective, as is even mixing. once you find *your* ratio of mix, make a paste of it with water, mix carefully then set to dry. When it is at mudball consistency push through mesh to create prills. leave to dry completely. bead of superglue or adhesive paper will attach prills to nerf head. Aim at hard surface for effect. Basic chemistry will purify the components for even greater effect however this is not recommended due to the much higher sensitivity of the end product. This is where we would be remiss if we detailed the process, so feel free to research further yourselves. The silica alone acts as a dampner of the effect, allowing the mixture to travel safer as well as create friction whilst use, *information is free and not an indication of our intent personally or for others* Good luck. P.S. King of Random did sticky dots back to back with a pile of mix in it as targets, not as ammo. Blowdarts and airsoft set them off. not sure if Nerf might.

That's part of it they also didnt mix it well and tbh, I've done it too using three large boxes of red phosphorus and a whole pack of matches. It was super sensitive I used paper and a spoon with a box cutter blade and acetone and got better results.

They sell these small exploding balls: It's the mixture wrapped in a thin paper and it's also filled with small (~1mm) gravels. If you throw them on the ground they explode. I made something similar with matches. I got a small plastic ampule, I put the mixture in with some really small stones, taped the hell out of it and it did a very loud bang.

Actually used to play with this all the time when I was a kid. First of all, you really really need to be wearing gloves if you're going to handle the mix. friction from the powder rubbing against itself can and will set it off if you're not careful so you shouldn't be pressing it down onto tape with your bare hands. You also need your powders much much finer and mixed much more thoroughly (though the more you mix the more likely you are to set it off accidentally. ) Next, no printer paper, its too thick for how light it is, fine if you're smacking with a hammer, not good if you want a projectile. Try tissue paper or single ply toilet paper. Next, you really need to impact between hard surfaces, so Brian's example of coating a ball bearing with it isn't a terrible idea. Let's see what you come up with from there
@jamiemarsden38232 жыл бұрын
I use armstrongs mixture all the time for caps and poppers and bonfire night fireworks rockets/crackers etc and even primers and i can tell you now as long as your powders are super fine (without debris) like the wood of the match sticks and material from the match boxes then it only takes a small amount of impact friction to ignite it into an ear ringing bang! but i don't recommend going below 10% of red phosphorus a on any ratio as the mix becomes much harder to ignite if there isn't an optimal amount of red phosphorus to chlorate ratio. however, theoretically you could use a 99/1 mix and it will still ignite tho such a ratio will have more friction resistance due to lack of oxidizing material in this case the (red phosphorus)

Where I live, we used those red revolver-y toy gun caps. So you use a big nail, grind the pointy end flat and round to fit the toy cap on, and tie some plastic rope on the back and comb it with a steel brush to fluff it up. You can do a similar thing with the nail, and use aluminum foil to wrap up the mixture to make a custom cap

I used to make the Armstrong's mixture when I was a kid, try taking the edge of a razor and gently brushing the match box striker, trying to maximize contact with just the striker. If you shred too close to the box, it gets fluffy as you get a lot of cellulose fiber from the box mixed into it
