I think a very simple solution to this whole thing would be to simply, replace the grass on the lawn with high-end astroturf. And then whatever underlayment is necessary to protect it from the helicopters down wash. This could be easily done without changing the aesthetic of the lawn itself, and would also allow for the helicopter to land quite easily.
@jimmorris10022 ай бұрын
Now, that would have made too much COMMON SENSE and save America many CENTS
@joebeach77592 ай бұрын
As far as the government is concerned, if sense were common, it wouldn't have a name. I'm sure they could develop an artificial turf that would work, especially since they spend so much on other worthless projects (I worked for the government for 33 years), or they could just build a helipad. Every government building or facility the president flies to outside of the DC beltway has one. Maybe they can even paint it green to match the grass. After the BILLIONS they have spent on this new helicopter program, that would be a drop in the bucket.
@ernie52292 ай бұрын

@joebeach77592 ай бұрын
@ernie5229 With the money the government spends, I'm sure they could develop something. Again, pave it and paint it green. It's only cost 30 billion so far, and they can't land it in the 1 place that's crucial to its operation? That's the government for you. That's like building a fighter for the Navy, and it can't land on a carrier. Surely, someone thought of this before they tried it. They really can't be that stupid.

The Osprey crash cited did NOT have to be a deadly crash. Significant pilot error was involved, in particular the PIC ignored the MULTIPLE warnings the aircraft gave regarding metallic debris in one of the rotor clutch assemblies. When that assembly finally failed, it caused the aircraft to crash. Had the PIC actually heeded the warnings, the aircraft would NOT have crashed, there would NOT have been any loss of life, and the aircraft could have been relatively easily repaired and back in service. Instead, the PIC did precisely and repeatedly the WRONG thing and everyone onboard died along with loss of the aircraft. The V-22 concept does work quite well overall. In fact, the US Navy chose a variant of it to be their replacement for the COD mission.
@MichaelMcKinnon-o6p23 күн бұрын
The V-22 that crashed with no survivors had a main shaft failure on the left side of the aircraft which would have felt like the reversal of the rotor although the separation of the left rotor's housing doomed the aircraft

I highly doubt Anyone would have a problem with simply installing a concrete Landing pad on the south lawn. There are already concrete pads for the landing gear now for exiting choppers...Just install a legitimate landing pad. It literally has a very legitimate, ongoing need to be there & frankly would be safer to land on concrete for stability as well as getting in & out of it especially in poor weather. Concrete is better than wet or snowy grass. There's also the common practice of having a Heated concrete pad... it is the same as many homes use for heated floors or driveways.... It uses a boiler to circulate Hot water thru flexible tubing laid out in a pattern and then the Ready Mix (concrete) is poured over the top encasing it inside so it's not damaged.... so even in winter while it's snowing.. the landing pad would be above freezing & safe to land or walk on.. no snow or Ice...and no damage to the grass.... For the few times when they "entertain" on the south lawn... they could roll out an artificial turf type artificial grass for the event... then it's back to being useful for important things... The Chopper is Much more of a high priority than just wanting a green yard. The white house is literally the highest priority "business" and Function is more important. Pour a Concrete landing pad, Add the Heated Tubing before it's poured & It'll last for Decades. The only maintenance is to flush the boiler/antifreeze occasionally.. simple, cheap, long lasting solution...

This doesn't make sense. They talk about heat and down wash, killing the lawn. Then, they talk about using the V-22. The V-22 can't land on the green because it burns the lawn with it exhaust in helicopter mode. In addition, the trees that are at the White House to the right and left of the LZ would have to be removed. More than likely, it's not the rotor wash or exhaust of the VH-92 that is the issue, but the fact the entry door is on the opposite side, changing the direction of landing and how the Secret Service enters the aircraft and also where the crew chief sits. Mostly, the commentator did know what he or she was talking about. As far as landing disks, they are used even with the current helicopter configurations.
