For Rogue - it defaults to 40 column screens (for composite monitors and TV's). Since you have the CM-8, you can run it in 80 columns ... and with 512K, with a graphics font. To try the latter two, type MAKE80 (for 80 column text) or MAKEGW (for 80 column but with actual graphics characters) before typing "ROGUE". (Or use NitrOS9/EOU which has it pre-installed and defaults to graphics mode... and in a sizable window). I will also mention that there are two versions of Shanghai in EOU as well, and the port of the cartridge version has 3 selectable tile sets as well (only one is built into the cartridge). There is an easter egg from the author (Rick Adams) where there is a hidden spot on the splash screen (when you select RGB or Composite) where you can get an alternate "ivory" colored set. You have to click on one specific pixel to get it. (On the EOU version, you can pick "Alternate" to get this without having to hunt down the easter egg pixel). And finally, a whole bunch of the Sierra AGI engine games are on EOU, including both that Tandy sold back in the day - Kings Quest III (that you showed, but no disk swaps needed) and Leisure Suit Larry.

Rick Adams was one of the best for Color Computer games. He often bent the Coco hardware to get the best sounds and graphics.

Great video! Although the games you featured exercise the capabilities of the Color Computer 3 they don't really take full advantage of its power. There are a handful of games like Crystal City, Contras, Pac Dude 3D, and Digger III which push the limits considerably with 2 or 4 way full screen scrolling and in the case of Digger III parallax and lighting effects. The games I mentioned do require 512k though. Full disclosure - I wrote Digger III 😁

Awesome I’ll have to check those out! Is Digger III available in web archives for use on something like the CoCo SDC?

@@vintagegeek - All of those are available on the Color Computer Archive, with CocoSDC friendly versions. And many, many more. :)

As always, great video Aaron! Kings Quest III is in my humble opinion the best in the series though it is HARD. You die more often than in even the other Sierra games of the era. Save often! As for the phone number, something similar happend to me and a friend a couple of years ago. We were drinking at my house, and for some reason started browsing old computer magazines from the late 80's and early 90's. There was a section were you could send in tips on how to complete games etc, and this fellow had wrote some tips on how to play "Pinball Dreams" (for the Amiga and Atari ST, so it might be up your alley). He included his phone number should anyone have more questions, so we tried it. It was a landline number, which is extremely rare nowadays here in Sweden where I live. But to our utmost surprise, someone answered, and it was the same guy. So we asked him a couple of questions about a game I haven't played in 30 years, and my buddy hasn't played at all. I't was a fun chat with the guy though, very friendly and he came through as happy we called. Call lasted at least 30 mins :D

It's surprising how much KQ3 looks like the PC version. I played the Tandy 1000 version back in the 80's. I still have my copy of it as well. I also had a CoCo2 as my first computer. When you install the 5.25" floppy in the 1000TL, be sure to run the SetupTL program to let the machine know the drive is in there as drive B:. It should work ok - I don't recall that the 5.25" floppy drives from Tandy were any different from standard drives. The 3.5" ones are quite different, however.

Hi, Thanks for the video! 🙂 It would be interesting to compare the Coco3 with the Coco2 and maybe the Commodore-128. Maybe doing some BASIC programs to compare the speed of both machines Ben

I know that the Tetris cartridge is programmed to use the Color Computer 3 graphics modes but will also work with the Color Computer 2. There may be other games that do this.

There is. Arkanoid, Mind Roll and Sokoban do as well (not sure if I am remembering all of them).

Give Rogue a chance. It's not easy to succeed. The scrolls have random names but all serve a purpose! After a bit, you won't defeat anything by merely running into it!

Awesome video. I had the TI 99/4a, (in all it's 16K goodness), but my friend had a CoCo (can't remember if it was model 3), but the only thing I really remember about that computer, was "Dungeons of Daggorath" lol. Cool Game. I miss the old days of spending agonizing hours creating the most simple Graphical programs in Basic programming. Then the "thrill" of saving/loading the game to audio cassette tape Ha! The sense of accomplishment when you enter "RUN" command, (then wait 1 minute lol), to finally see your creation come alive in front of you. It's great you are highlighting these vintage computer systems on KZbin, and especially with the upcoming vintage computer museum. 🖱 🖥 Just awesome. Thanks.
