As a woman, I feel we are often colder sleepers than men. I really liked the Paria pad and actually did a review on it, but don't feel its R-Value is really 4.7. I have since picked up a Nemo Tensor Alpine, and its R value of 4.8 is more spot on than whatever system Paria has (or hasn't, it seems) used. Appreciate you featuring Paria products, I agree they are solid budget choices and their customer service is great. My husband and daughter have the Thermodown 15 degree quilt, and they love them. Hi Sue! I think in general you are right about women sleeping a bit colder. I’m also a warm sleeper in general! I don’t have a lot to compare the Paria pad to, but I am hoping they do astm testing at some point so we have a direct comparison. The estimated r value may be a bit high, as you pointed out. I have heard good things about the Nemo tensor alpine! I also have the 15 degree quilt! Other than the coldest temps in winter, I think I’ll be using a quilt from now on! Nice review. I’m a cold, cold sleeper, so I needed an insulated sleeping pad that will definitely keep me warm at night. I’m cheap, but I didn’t cut corners on my sleeping pad. I opted for the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm. It’s expensive, it’s rather noisy, but I’m old and decrepit. Also, I wear hearing aids, so when they’re out it can make all the noise imaginable and I won’t be bothered. But, thanks again for your review. I enjoyed it.

I have the Paria XL and love it, I definitely don't think it is as noisy as other insulated pads and it has beld up to a lot of abuse, very happy with the cost for this gear! Nice review!

Yes! Another Paria fan! Seriously, this thing is AWESOME. When I was testing sleeping bags on it I had planned to check the temp every few hours, but slept for 6.5 hours straight without waking up. I use a regular summer pad (Klymit Static V), with a sheet of reflectex under it during the winter. Since R values are additive, I end up over 4.0, and I can confirm that it keeps me warm below freezing. Plus, it gives me some confidence that I won't freeze if my sleeping pad deflates during the night (BTDT). Combined weight is comparable to a winter pad, and I can go lighter in warm weather by leaving the reflectix at home.

This is a great way to do it! You may have noticed in some of the shots that I took a Z lite to put underneath the Apollo Air. Like you said, that adds to your overall R value and the additional weight isn't bad. I've never used the reflectix but have heard of others doing the same. That stuff probably weighs nothing, so worth it for the additional warmth! Thanks for watching!

Backpacking in Germany would be awesome! I've been over there, but just in the cities or driving between cities. But I remember the forests and hills--must be gorgeous in the backcountry!

@@DoseofDirt Yes, there are beautiful places here. Unfortunateley we only have about 3% wilderness in Germany, so it's very hard to find good spots. Most of the time you can not throw a stone, without it landing on a hiking or woodworking trail, lol

glad to hear i just bought the recharge double for me and my dog. I was packing two expeds that are for sure the best sleep you can get anywhere but at almost 4 lbs and the pack size of a vw ...Im getting to old to be carrying 35 lbs base. after i bought it i saw a bad review but it was from a outfitter so i blew it up and laid on it with my dog and it was comfortable but that been the extent of my test so far. we dont sleep in much under 15- 20 ° SO im hoping it'll be fine.for my first season with it im still going to take one of my expeds just in case as the last pad i bough failed on the very first nigh and thank god we had the exped with us.

"Pack size of a VW" 😂 I hear you though! My pack gets a whole lot heavier when I take the two dogs with me (50lb huskies). Smart of you to blow it up and lay on it before just taking it out. I think I mentioned in the video that my first Paria seemed to have an issue, but I messaged them and they sent me one the very next day. So far zero issues with this one and I used it a lot over the winter! It you want some additional warmth with not too much weight, I've heard a lot of people take some reflextix to put under the pad. Ex-military here, used a bit of everything in the Service from sleeping in the buff in a steamy jungle to 2/3 cut down closed cell foam. Not anymore. Used Big Agnes Pads for 14 years now, few others too. Currently using a Big Agnes 20"x66" Petite for 3 Season and the 20"x72 heavier insulated model for winter. Looking at trying some Sea to Summit models soon.

Sweet versus video Jeff! This is some great info for your followers for a budget winter pad! I don't do much camping below freezing and just bring my Nemo Tensor long/wide insulated for most of my other trips and it works out great. About 23 ozs, 3.5R value, SUPER comfortable and I got it at 25% off on REI so a total of about $135.

I have the Big Agnes and love it although just a bit more expensive but not outrageously more, also 4”, standard R value of 4.7 and because I’m a side sleeper I’m more comfortable with 25” wide, not too noisy. Had I discovered your channel earlier I might have gotten your favorite and save me some bucks, oh well, at least I do like the Big Agnes.

Therm-a-rest Trail Pro is what I've used and it is amazing, though the pack size appears to be a bit larger. But there are a bunch of other benefits like it's nice feel, quiet fabric, and that it is semi selfinflatable.

Dude this is a solid comparison and review. I laughed because I am the worst at mixing up letters when it comes to acronyms. haha I've had that Paria pad on my Amazon wishlist forever. I think the biggest thing for me in pads is width. As I know you have seen me talk about I love my Nemo Tensor, but man I wish I got the wide version. 20" is just not enough!

haha. Ya, for some reason I always struggle with the ATSM (even now I can't remember what the correct order is... 🤣). The width is a big deal. I would never go more narrow than 23. I wouldn't complain about an extra 2 inches on this Paria, but I've found that the width works well for me. I never feel like I'm falling off. 20" would definitely be too narrow for me, but I think I have a wider build (or maybe that's the holiday treats??). Thanks for watching, man!

I’m in the market for a winter sleeping pad.. considering the Nemo insulated wide or the Paria recharge insulated.. also considering the Paria short pad.. I use a Lounge Dr bolster in bed to keep my legs elevated as it helps reduce leg pain when I sleep.. the idea of elevating my legs a bit on my pack while I sleep and spending less $ for a pad as well as saving weight is enticing too My health & strength has been challenged for a decade due to tick diseases and indoor mold.. so my finances are challenged too. It’s tough for me to get lightweight gear due to cost but also there is just no way my body can handle the cheap and heavy gear either so I appreciate all your videos about true budget gear (rather than other folks talking about “budget gear” that costs $200 and above!

I use a NEMO Quasar 3D Insulated sleeping pad (regular wide, $170) for my winter camping with an R value of 3.3, but I live in Texas so it (usually) doesn't get too cold down here. It's almost as comfortable as sleeping on a mattress and I go camping quite often, so I think it was worth the price. I'd probably just add a foam pad underneath if I really needed some extra warmth, but so far I haven't found it to be necessary.

Hey, for just an extra few ozs I use a rechargeable mini pump to blow up my Paria Recharge XL...doing this stops warm air and all the moisture from your lungs fouling the insulation! It's so small you won't even notice it and it works like crazy!

I bought a gear docs apolloair when it was first marketed on Amazon. It had hair oil stain on it so had it replaced. That one didn't even half pumped up when two seams loudly popped. With its weight, price and claimed 5.2 r-value I was hoping it was going to work but didn't. I bought a accordion closed cell foam mat with an r-value of 2.1 and a Mountain Designs pad with an r-value of 3.2 and in a cheap 0 degree teton sports leaf sleeping bag I was plenty warm recently in 25 degree southern Utah desert sand. Cheap setup that I don't have to baby in the cold. I'm not just cheap but penurious.

Sounds like Gear Doctors may have some consistency issues! So far mine has held up alright with dozens of uses, but sounds like you got a bad one, which is a bummer. They may replace it again, but who wants to have to get a new pad every few uses (and not be able to trust it). Sounds like you've got a solid setup now! The Teton Leef is a good budget 0 degree bag. I actually own one as well! If it's getting below freezing or weight is a concern, I'll take a different bag, but the Teton Leef is great! Thanks so much for watching!

@@DoseofDirt Of course you know I may have got a bad pad but hold one of those geardoctor apolloair pads up to sunlight and see if it has any insulation. If there's only some exotic coating other than air I'll be surprised. I saw that the valleys or sealed seams have nothing to insulate. I suspect it will have cold air will migrate up from below no matter if there's any other pad underneath. I neglected to include that I had a rechargeable hand warmer in that inside pocket as well as two pair of socks on and a down balaclava for my noggin. 25 degrees F. is pushing the comfort limit of the leef without added helps. My old 15 degree down Marmot Sawtooth is about the same temp range while only 1/2 pound lighter. I've decided to do the hot water nalgene inside of a dry bag for my feet in the huge footbox of the leef instead of buying an expensive lightweight down bag and use my 850 fill eddiebauer down sweater to compensate for what the bag lacks. Anyway to each his own way to try what will work. Good luck in the future and Happy Trails

@@loudowning3393 Ya, you're right about the insulation in the Gear Doctors. I definitely didn't mean to come across as saying "this is an amazing pad, so you must have just got a bad one!" The Apollo Air definitely has it's issues, and for $100 I would want better quality, real insulation (as you pointed out), a larger pad, and more consistency. So I think you made the right call going with something else. It's amazing what you can get to work for you without purchasing super expensive gear! I used a closed cell foam pad, a cheap 2 inch thick inflatable (Sleeping with r value of 2) and my 20 year old Slumberjack sleeping bag below freezing. Just wore my coat and beanie in the bag and had an extra layer on as well. No reason to let the lack of expensive gear keep you from enjoying the back country in the winter! I also got the apolloair from amazon. The pumpsack was leaking air, wrote them a few months ago, that that arrived damaged, still no response. Haven't used the pad yet (only blown it up once to test) as it had gotten too cold for me. I bought it because the price to R-value ratio seemed really good, but I have gotten douts about that being accurate.

But combining it with my thermarest Z lite I took it down to mid-low 20F. I'm surprised they haven't responded yet. I would maybe try messaging them on Instagram. That's how I got in touch with them before. Frustrating when you try out a product and then can't get customer support!

I have some Big Agnes pads that are NOT well reviewed. They don't list R-Value at all and are just called "insulated". It does not work below 30 degrees! I also can't stand the sound. Just got an Apollo Air that my son used this weekend in the Great Smokey's. He stayed warm and slept well. I used my Klymit Insulated Static V. I stayed warm too, but thinking about getting another Apollo Air to replace the Klymit Insulated.

Hey Guy! I think I would like the Apollo Air more if I were a little shorter (or it was just a little longer). I've been surprised at how well it's done down to colder temps so I'm not suprised it has worked well for your son! And it is LIGHT! I'm half tempted to cut this one in half to see what is in there. I saw on their site that they are planning to get ASTM testing done sometime in the future. Will be interesting to see where it lands on the R value spectrum! The Klymit insulated is another one I was considering getting, but the dimensions and thickness of the Paria seemed on the money for me. If you haven't yet, you shoudl try a night on your son's Apollor Air before you get another. It might be perfect for you! And I am jealous you were in the Smokeys! I tried the sea to summit either light xt extreme (r 6.2 I believe) good for me till about 10-15 F. I switched out to thermarest xtherm ntx (r 7.3) I had no problem with this pad at -17 F last week. Sea to summit is alot heavier but also alot more comfortable, but warm to weight ratio just isn't there... both these pads are 200 dollars though

Great comparison! I've been researching and looking for a warmer sleep pad. I added these two pads to my watch list. The last two years, I've been using the trekology ul80. I like it, but need another pad for when it's colder out. Like you, I want good quality gear that doesn't cost a fortune. Have you heard of or tried lixada titanium pots? I have the 750ml and love it.

Hey Greg! The Paria is very similar to the trekology in size and thickness. If I could only have 1 pad, that's the one I would choose because it is like the trekology in a lot of ways, just warmer. I REALLY wish Trekology would just make an insulated version of UL80! I have not tried the lixada titanium pot. I have a toaks and then bought a budget brand (redcamp) to compare. They both seem the same to me! Another example of how you don't have spend a fortune to go light and enjoy the back country! Thanks so much for watching!

I have the Boundless Voyage titanium 750 ml pot, I like the handle that comes out and locks like the trusty Stanley that many of us have with the advantage this is titanium. The little inexpensive French press inside thingy you see in many systems works like a charm in it, Amazon sells it on by itself too. Love that pot.

When you combine an inflatable pad with a close foam pad...does the R-value stack or is there something of a trade off? I (in my ignorance) assume that they would...so...since most over-night hikers bring some sort of foam pad (i've yet to see a hike-tuber do an overnight WITHOUT an additional foam pad) wouldn't that boost the overall R-value of your set up? Does something like a "footprint tarp" also reduce the grounds ability to sap heat...ultimately giving you another...I donno...fraction of an R-value?

I've read in a few different places that when adding a foam pad to the inflatable, the r values are additive (so the thermarest z lite would add something like 2 to the r value of the inflatable). I've tried it on a few trips, and it definitely works (and is more comfortable!). I just slept on the Paria down to 10F (-12C) this weekend. I was alright, but any colder and I would definitely want the Thermarest with me. Those things are just so light and so easy to strap to the outside, why not take it if the temps might dip? Makes sense why so many people carry them, like you said! I've heard of some people getting reflectix type stuff to put under their sleeping pad and that helps. something I've been meaning to try, but just haven't gotten around to it! Those big 4x8 pink foam insulation boards you can get at Home Depot for about $50 advertise R10 value... Is that the same R-value as these? Hey Francois! If I was taking the Gear Doctors out in 25F, I would probably take my thermarest Z light foam pad as well for the additional.R value. Part of that is because I always plan on 10 degrees colder than the forecast (so i would plan on it being 15F if the forecast is 25F). But if the forecast was 35F, I would be ok with just the Gear Doctors pad (no additional foam pad) knowing that if it got colder I could layer up a bit if needed. Thanks so much for watching!

Stopped at the dimensions. Sleep is the most important part of backpacking. If you get a good rest on such a small pad, I’m jealous and happy for you. Just know that there are 30” pads that better suit stomach sleepers or those who toss a bit. Yes it’s a weight penalty, but a good rest is worth it.

Hi Jeff. First off, your beard is great but looking scraggly. Get a trim. 🧔🏻💈✂ Secondly, my current winter sleeping pad is the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir® Camper Wavecore and it kicks butt! Honestly, I do have that pad. (the only sleeping pad I own and I've never winter camped with it.) It's got a R value of 2.5. What winter camping I've done, I've used an Outdoor Vitals Aeries 20° in a pod configuration with a 32° or colder sleeping bag in my hammock. I am contemplating trying a winter tarp camping trip. Will use my existing pad mentioned previously. Supplemented with a ground tarp, reflective emergency blanket, then the pad, then a wool blanket and either a sleeping bag or quilt for the appropriate temps. (I will be testing this set-up before any planned hike.) Now, I'll unpause and continue with your video.

Customer service is important. I've heard nothing but good things regarding Paria's customer service (and their warranties). My Therm-a-Rest pad is 25" wide and I feel that my arms are going to fall off when I sleep on my back. Not sure how I would feel on a narrower pad. As mentioned before, I am a hammock camper so worring about pad width is new to me. It doesn't help that I have broad shoulders. I am getting back into tent camping some so I have options for when hammock camping is not ideal. Before hammock camping I had about 10+ year break from camping and before that I car camped in a tent with a cot (30" wide) and before the cot, I had the old style laminated canvas type sleeping pads and I have no recollection of the width of those.

@@Doc_Watson I haven't slept on a 25 inch wide pad. I'm honestly a little afriad to try it for fear I won't be able to go back. So far the 23 inch wide pads have worked well for me. It's interesting because when I just lay on the pad I also feel like my arms are falling off, but in a sleeping bag or under a quilt, I've just never felt like that. @@DoseofDirt I think I did well with my choice of pad. Not the lightest or the cheapest. Name brand, on clearance was over 50% off and came with an electric mini air pump. 76x25x3, 2.5 R value and 39.9oz (pad, stuff sack, repair kit, & pump w/out batteries) 28.2 oz pad alone. This backpacking tenting stuff is new to me. I've only car camped tented in the past. I don't plan on going ultralight. I wanted a pad that was wide enough for me and thick enough that I could have it really soft. I do not like a firm mattress. (One of the reasons I love hammock camping.) The problem with the cot is that you are up off the ground and you need insulation under you. I use a thick blanket under the sleeping bag and then full the empty space under the cot with gear to minimize airflow under me. But that's car camping - a whole different animal.

Hey Arka! In some of the shots it may have shown a foam mat because I occasionally take one when it's going to be super cold, but for all the tests where I recorded temperature, etc., I did it with no foam pad. I just had some other footage from trips where I did use a foam pad underneath.

@@beezwaks I have heard others say they like the Unigear Campfy P3, but I haven't tried it personally. Interesting you saw a review slamming the Paria for being cold. Was it the Recharge XL model? For me personally it's been good, but I do sleep warm. You can definitely get pads with higher R value, but you have to pay double (which maybe you already are with the duties, etc. What a pain!). If sea-to-summit is easier to get for you, they have some great pads that are also 4 inches thick. I haven't tried them because they are more expensive, but I've been close to pruchasing one a few times!

My plan is to have a foil lined foam mat underneath it always coz I cant afford to pop it if im spending that much ( even as a budget option its alot for me). I plan to use inside a surplus gore tex bivy, with an old swiss surplus bag, under a Tarp. In cold wet rain forest of Aotearoa New Zealand. Occasionally it may get to -5 C. Will the XL keep up if I have a wool blanket too?

Beginner's question: if I'm on a budget and willing to create an year round system, can I get just one high R-value pad with a decent cold weather sleeping bag and for hotter days, just change the sleeping bag for a lightweight cheaper quilt?

Yes! If you're on a budget, definitely get a higher R-value pad and it should be fine year round. Might be a *little* warm in the summer months, but to me it's easy to shed heat by taking my quilt/bag off and just laying on the pad (even though it is high R value). One that is warmer than the Paria that I've been using recently is the Big Agnes Rapide SL. If you're willing to pay $50 more (it's $150) then this one is probably a bit warmer. But if you're not going below freezing and don't sleep cold, the Paria would probably be alright. I think you've got the right idea for a year-round system on a budget!

I'd be willing to pay, just not able 😅 I'll probably invest more in day hikes before buying a sleep system for camping. It is still too expensive for me right now. I'll also be looking at used gear. Maybe this way I can find something.

@@Inquisitive-Badger Just measured mine and it is about 0.75 inches. I tried fitting my pump sack from the Gear Doctors, but the nozzle on the Gear Doctors pump sack is too small. Wish I had some more pump sacks to try. On a whim I checked Paria's website and found that they have a pump bag for the Recharge. I had both of these pads and would definitely NOT recommend either of them for winter camping. I've used these both at temperatures with a low of 3 degrees Celsius and I felt the cold through the ground on both nights!!! I've used my Sea to Summit comfort light insulated pad which has a lower 3.7 R-value (ASTM tested) at temperatures down to 1C and didn't feel the cold at all! My guess is that if they're ASTM tested then they would only be around 2 R-value. Absolutely misleading descriptions from the manufacturers of these pads... If you buy a sleeping pad then make sure that it's ASTM tested. Gear doctors make a pad with NO insulation and give it a 5.2 R-value rating!!! Give me a break! 🤦🏼‍♂️

Thanks for adding your thoughts! Ya, I think the 5.2 R value is definitely high. That is one of the reasons I prefer the Paria over the GD. I have used the Paria below freezing on several occasions and it has worked well, but everyone sleeps a little differently. If it's going to be too far below freezing, I add the Thermarest Z Lite for some additional R value. I do wish that all pads were ATSM tested. I think some companies (Paria included) try to give a best estimate, but others do seem to inflate the numbers which is annoying. Thanks so much for watching!

I got in touch with Paria after using it the first time and told them that I felt the cold through the pad at 2C and they advised me that I needed to use a foam mat underneath when it reaches that temperature as it's not meant for those temps!?!? 🤷🏼‍♂️ I live in the UK so too much of a faff to return to the US plus cost. I bought the geardoctors one after hearing lone wolf 902 rave about it's 5.2 R-value on his channel only to find out it has zero insulation in it! 🤦🏼‍♂️ It's the same with sleeping bags too! Companies can put whatever rating they want on them and its absolute bs!

I think smaller companies struggle getting that done because of the cost, but I think a lot of companies making cheap pads just don't because then they can inflate the number (this makes me mad!). I'm actually going through this right now where a company sent me a pad they want me to review that they say is 'insulated' but so far I haven't been able to get specifics of what it is insulated with or how much insulation is there. @@DoseofDirt no not yet pal. Saving up for a thermarest xtherm for this winter. But at the moment I'm using the sea to summit comfort light insulated coupled with one of those thin foam reflective pads like what you'd use on the windscreen of a car. That does the job down to -5C, it doesn't get much colder than that in the UK. But looking to lighten the load with an xtherm as the sea to summit large is just around 780g off the top of my head plus the foam pad which is not much tbh but it's also bulky taking two pads. I always take my dog with me too so I'm then carrying 3 pads in winter! 🥵
