I'm so glad you asked. That is a media storage case made by Fellowes that I got at Goodwill for 99¢. Fellowes no longer makes it but I am searching for another. Buddy products also, used to, make one very similar. I need like 10 of these! Still looking for more. It's absolutely perfect for projects in progress.

Good topic,, I went thru that too, some 40yrs ago. Even the white on the decals turned yellowish. I stopped using Testors spray pants altogether.

Yea. I do kinda wish that Testors never made the high gloss, but if you saw it on like a red, it really makes it pop. But on white, it's gotta be crystal clear.

Yes, the PPG can be purchased in aerosol form or in bottle/ cans for airbrushing. They can only be purchased from automotive paint supply stores. Zero paints are airbrush ready straight from the bottle and can be purchased online.

Hi I have in the past looked at this problem, what needs to understood is the two different types of clear-cote; Enamel and Lacquer, Enamel will always turn yellow over time. Lacquer is today normally an Acrylic based material used to paint 1/1 cars and is solvent based not water that's very different once again, but both materials won't go yellow. I understand that you cote solid colours with enamel clear but as it yellows if you repainted a part of that car years later nothing will match, use the lacquer clear over the paint and it will.

I talked to a Tech Rep from Testors one day at a contest that was there and asked WHY was their "Gloss" and "Dull" Coat were turning models Yellow on any light color surface. What he told me was that both were made with Bees Wax. So I talked with my High School Art Teacher asked him about what turns something Yellow. He said "Take a Prism and put a Flash Light through it, what do you get"??? You get a "Rain Bow" of colors such as Red, Yellow, Green, and etc. Now if you had something with the color of White mixed in it, it would Reflect the color and give you a CLEAR coat.

I ran into this situation with Testors gloss clear enamel about 30 years ago on the Miller Mustang model. As to Future, I have a bottle of this product that turned Amber sitting in the bottle over 20 plus years. Some modelers have claimed that the yellowing is caused by not letting the white gas out before applying the clear. Apparently, Testors doesn't adhere to that theory. Most clears may fail the test of being "truly" clear on white.
@Toppervision15 жыл бұрын
Yes. My bottle of Future has also developed a yellow tint to it, which surprises me. It's about 10 years old. There's also another product called polycrylic out there. I got some but didn't try it yet. On your Miller car, just set the whole car out in the direct sunlight for a few hours. You'll be surprised.

I have some that have yellowed but I have never had the testors High gloss to yellow. but I guess it would on white makes sense. thanks for sharing info

Testors clear is horrible no matter which one you choose with the exception of their Model Master Ultra gloss clear. That stuff works great. It took me awhile to learn that if you want a flawless clear coat finish don't be cheap about it unless you are on an absolutely tight budget. I highly recommend PPG 2K clear or Zero paint products.
@Toppervision111 жыл бұрын
Well, I gotta disagree. The clear clear I'm showing here is great, at least compared to all the spray can clear coats. I get great results. But, gosh, I'm listening. Are these higher end clears you're mentioning available in spray cans? Or must they be airbrushed?

I just used the "clear" from rustoleum ,large can on my dark blue 90's dodge ram and it looks great. Since the small cans cost so much now a days. And the big can's aren't that bad in price compared to the small ones. And Supposedly rustoleum bought testors.??

Oh no, it's not the same paint. The Testors is not going to do well outside. Yes, use the big cans.

The case looks identical to the ones that Hobby Lobby carries on their model row. I have a video posted comparing the case with the ones that Micheals sells. I have the prices and everything documented on the video as well.

LOL!! Oh no, I am no longer macho! If it's any consolation, I would run out of gas blindly wandering in the car before I asked for directions. And if I can't find something at the grocery store, it just won't get purchased that day, and that's final!

Hello... to paint templates or stripes in my matchbox car, can i use oil painting and if not what paint would you recommend me .. thanks
@hobbycow53466 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention that you are recommending to spray lacquer clear over enamel. That would be a disaster. I build many models and use #1814 clear with no problems. Being that I actually read the labels of products I use, I don't use any clear over white, since it clearly states it dries amber. I just wetsand and buff with Scratch-X and then Mequiars Fine Polish. Buff with a microfiber and it's glossy as you need to be. White models do NOT need to be clearcoated...just polished. and unless you are going with a PPG, the hobby grade clears will dry amber.
@Toppervision16 жыл бұрын
Hugo Watchthis But I really do spray lacquer over enamel all the time, sometimes when the enamel is still wet. If it's all Testors, it works. And this video of course is explaining the 2 clears, one that says dries amber when I read the label, the other really is clear. But otherwise you are right, a car polish does the same thing. I've done that too.
@hobbycow53466 жыл бұрын
Spraying Lacquer clear over enamels surprises me... Even if the same brand. Supposedly it's OK to spray Enamel over lacquer as the lacquer sets up better. But every answer if you Google the question says the lacquer clear coat will eat into the enamel undercoat, as the solvents are too "hot" in lacquer. The only lacquer I feel comfortable with is Testors Dull Cote over enamel, as it's a light coat. Next time you do a white model just buff and polish, it's just as glossy and will never yellow. After wetsanding with 2000+ grit, I put these foam 3" polishing pads I got from Amazon and put them on a cordless drill, and buff to a great shine with Scratch X and Mequiars Polish. I also found out most success is to never spray on a day warmer than 70º, or the gloss enamel sets up too quick and you get bad orange peel and solvent pop. Spray your enamel gloss on a cool dry day, put inside in a cool closed room and it all slicks out nice. On the right day, you don't even need to wetsand. of course every color behaves differently. Happy Modeling! :-)
