I would like to see a part 2 of this. There is a LOT of stuff you did not mention, most notably the entire "Limbo Page" containing 20 minigames. There are also unused sections of music, unused texts, unused seed packets, debug mode, and the world 6 map in the beta (6 lane night with raised ground), just to mention a few

I think that I’ve played a version of the game with the bungee zombie and zomboni in I zombie when I was at a local pizza place once. That version was so strange. When you unlocked mini games, you got enough coins to buy out Dave’s shop and all of the mini games.

Good video! A few notes, however: "The zombies look way more ghoulish" (4:29) - those are an alien type from Insaniquarium, Sylvester! "[...] Might have been replaced by Kernal-Pault" (6:17) - considering it has the freezing effect (where it slows down zombies but doesn't immobilize them) I'd say it's more akin to Winter Melon.

I think the weird helmet (you thought it was for the Giga-Garg) was for the catapult zombie, probably with a more medieval design. (As discussed by people with more knowledge than me, I stand corrected) Fun fact you didn’t cover: the “blood” on the buckethead’s bucket is actually red paint, in line with its beta “painter” design.

Afaik the weird helmets are are clear reference to (or rather a direkt copy of) Masterblaster from Mad Max, which was a larger brutish character carring a midget on their back - just like the Giga-Garg. Maybe they removed it because it was too much of a reference or looked out of place.

The ghoulish looking zombies are actually Sylvester the Alien from Pop Cap's previous game, Insaniquarium Deluxe The sprite itself comes from the "beta" version of Insaniquarium Deluxe, simply called Insaniquarium

That screenshot has to be REAL old, too, because it’s not even the insaniquarium deluxe sprite for the alien.

4:31 Those are actually the Sylvester (Basic Alien) from Insaniquarium 6:18 They were most likely replaced by the Winter Melon upgrade, which is way more helpful with its splash damage 6:52 You would click the plant once it's on a seed you want, which would change it to it, and then would need to recharge before you could change to another plant, most likely was scrapped for Imitater

Oh, also here's a fun fact : PvZ was originally supposed to be a sequel to Insaniquarium, but George Fan was interested in gardening, so he decided to make a new game based on the concept, and it eventually become PvZ (that's also why there's a lot of Insaniquarium assets/placeholders in the pre-release, because PvZ was made on top of Insaniquarium).

So at 4:30, those enemies are actually straight from the original Insaniquarium. The game had a basic java release before the Deluxe version came out. Unfortunately it might be lost media at this point, since it was web browser based. You can also see here that the game window is labelled as Insaniquarium Deluxe 1.0, which shows that Plants vs. Zombies runs on the same engine. All the conceptual graphics are in the same art style as the original java release of Insaniquarium, which is pretty cool!

The spikeweed degrading would probably be under the same circumstances as Spikerock. Spikeock can survive 3 gargantuar attacks, or popping a zomboni/catapult zombie 3 times-losing its outer spikes each time. Spikeweed may have at once been able to do the job twice.

what probably happened is that, while playtestings, they seen that spikeweed surviving 2 hits from a zomboni was too good, so they nerf it the amount to one and reused the idea for spikerock.

More than likely Iceberg lettuce was replaced by Melon pult's upgrade, Winter melon.

For Spikeweed degrading, it would have probably done so like Spikerock does currently, so it would've been able to take multiple Zombonis/Gargantuar strikes before getting destroyed, and would have degraded for each hit taken. At some point, the developers determined that this was too powerful, made Spikeweed get one-shot from all of these effects, and gave the durability/degradation functionality to Spikerock only.
