As a person that was around during this time without telling my age, but this song came out during the Mariah Carey debut and Emotions albums era. After Mariah had been out building an image for herself, people were putting out singles were they hit high notes for some reason. The duet, I'll be There that Mariah did with her back up singer Trey Lorenz, he goes up really high on a section of the song. I remember people were saying she sung the duet with Tevin Campbell due to this song (Tell Me what You want Me To Do). It was crazy but we had good songs back then.
