When I saw the length of Eight Little Talons I thought that this chapter might take me the longest to read. Well, turned out that this ended up being my favourite story of the book. I had started reading in the evening and then stayed up quite late just so I could finish this story.

HA! took me a moment to realize that "Eight Little Talons" is a reference to "Ten little Indians/Sailors" a very morbid poem that a kill follows in the Agetha Christie novel "And Then There Were None". It doesn't end well in the book.

I personally would take everything in Solas’ story with a spoonful of salt. With caressing the idol and all that. It would seem like such an odd detail to call attention to and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was there just to throw people off and waste time trying to analyse it.

Great video, Caitie, was worth the wait! I'd like to expand on a point you mentioned, you pointed out some disappointment that we know the Crows killed the famous queen of Antiva but I think this is something we should expect going into the next game: DA4 is likely going to be an end to a lot of major plots in the series. We may see more mysteries be solved or dangling plot threads tied up. I'm actually really glad to know who/what is responsible for the queen's murder and I anticipate more questions that have lingered through the franchise will be addressed or brought to some conclusion. And this is, I think, a good thing for the series - that things will be winding down and plots put to bed. The mystery behind many stories in Thedas, from the remaining Magisters Sidereal to the remaining Old Gods to the Elven Gods to what the heck the Titans are and everything in between may come to ahead and the final puzzle pieces may be revealed. This small detail of a murder mystery solved (within a murder mystery!) could be foreshadowing of other famous/infamous things brought to light and put to rest as the franchise prepares to end.

I think the only charater I'm really excited about and hope to be an actual companion is Lucanis. I liked the other characters and they worked really well for their stories and I wouldn't be bothered at all if they came back (as companions) I feel like Lucanis' story was particularly open ended and a potential arc already laid out. So much so that I'd be suprised if he didn't come back.

Omg yes!!! I thought the same thing I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who felt that way. As soon as I finished his story I immediately wanted him as a companion. He sounds super badass, has interesting connections, and he’s got a redemption arc just perfectly laid out. I want him as a companion so so bad. And I want him romanceable lol 😂

Hello getting to this really late. I think Solas wants to be stopped by an inky he befriended. We have shown him the world isn't actually all bad! Yet he is so dead set on fixing his mistakes, that even if he wanted to stop he thinks he owes it to the elves to not stop. He did wreck them after all. Or he could just be bending the truth. It's been a while since I played, but I think merging everything is gonna suck hard boiled eggs, but elves will have ANOTHER chance to actually get their feet on the ground from it.

Great timing! I finished the book hours before I got the video notification! The last chapter had me screaming with feels because we got some after Meredith's crazy fiasco, the Talon chapter was a fun murder mistery adventure but really made me feel the epic Talons of Origin werent so epic after all. I really hope we get to see some of the character from some chapters as NPCs at least, would love to meet them in game

This makes me think Solas created the blight (the event not the disease) as a fail safe against the Evanuris being freed by mortals.

Nah I think Blight is something Evanuris discovered/started by accident. In the Deep Roads you find a codex entry about Mythal killing the Titan with this endiing: "For a moment, the scent of blood fills the air, and there is a vivid image of green vines growing and enveloping a sphere of fire. The vision grows dark. An aeon seems to pass. Then the runes crackle, as if filled with an angry energy. A new vision appears: elves collapsing caverns, sealing the Deep Roads with stone and magic. Terror, heart-pounding, ice-cold, as the last of the spells is cast. A voice whispers: "What the Evanuris in their greed could unleash would end us all. Let this place be forgotten. Let no one wake its anger. The People must rise before their false gods destroy them all." Also there are mentions of Andruil venturing to the void, making weapons and armour out of it and going insane.

One thing I found kind of interesting was Viago's internal crisis over his bitterness regarding his royal bastard status. Kinda wondering if maybe something happens to the Antivan Crown and one solution is making Viago king? Granted, we've already done "Succession crisis can be solved by making the illegitimate son king" but I did find the fact that he thinks about it interesting.

They can get away with a LOT with giving us unreliable narrators. I wish they hadn't had to ret-con, especially Antiva. A lot of us were looking forward to finally seeing it, because of the introduction by Zevran; I'd like the history of his revenge to remain intact. Then again, it could be problematic since he could be dead. Loved the breakdown of Dread Wolf Take You. This was my first time hearing it. Veeerrrryyy interesting information on Solas. It makes me wonder if the petrification is reversible... though I have my own theory on what Solas is doing and why. I actually don't think he's the true villain.

My tinfoil: I think Solas is taking down the Veil because he realized he failed to stop the Blight by penning his old family. Or, it worked for awhile, but now the red lyrium is out of the bag. I think the avatars/archdemons/God pieces are almost all free, and the Titans are waking, and he has to do something more... _final_ with regards to Andruil and Gil'athan, this time. But he might be the villain. I guess we'll find out 😊

I don’t know much about books based off video game series. Is it common for them to skimp on the editing and/or have really short time frames? The first few having sloppy editing makes sense but once a franchise is this big, I would have thought the books would get some budget upgrades. Again, I don’t know what the scene is like for this... are video game tie in books a genre?? I mean, these are fantasy, but also tie ins, so... whatever this kind of thing is. Maybe it’s common, I was just a little surprised to hear this pattern has stuck around all this time. It wouldn’t have caught my attention so much, but every instance of it reminds me of varric’s banter about his editor who once killed a man over a semicolon and makes me laugh, so it sticks in the memory more.

When I saw the cover all I could think of was "oh, someone decided that if they made it look like the Avengers it might sell more." Seriously. *That's Avengers.* You can easily identify Cap, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Widow. I have a suspicion that with the anthology nature of the book made it impossible for them to actually get cover art because there wasn't a consistent narrative or consistent cast of characters so they just sort of threw a bunch of dragon-agey s--- against the wall and called it a cover.

Reading of Solas appearance in this book just made me think how much I just want to punch his ugly bowling ball of a head. All my Inquisitors might have gotten his friendship - let's be honest, it really isn't hard even if you absolutely don't care about getting it - but I just hate his guts. Has nothing to do with the whole dread wolf thing - he just needed to show up for the first time and I already didn't like him. Something about him just rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning and it only became worse over the course of the game. I really don't get how so many people like him or, even worse, romance him.

Honestly rather disappointed how much is being retconned. Do you think it is Weekes unfamiliarity with the finer details of the settling or is personalizing it to tell his story rather than Gaider's? All in all Tevinter Nights has been my least favourite Dragon Age novel and I am kind of hoping it more is representational of the flavour of the DA4 then being canonical. Also I find it kind of jarring the contrast between the Solas we travelled with (is infected with red lyrium in the future without the Inquisitor, is not able to prevent the Inquisitor from slaying the ancient elves etc) to the Solas who is able to intervene in EVERY major organization whenever convenient and gets away with it. I really don't want weight of the entire series to rest upon him.

Weekes isn’t a one person army, and neither was Gaider. DA has been a group effort from the beginning! It isn’t that the current team (who is filled with veterans of the series) isn’t familiar with the material, but rather they are finding the current material doesn’t suit their needs. The retconning in this novel I don’t mind so far. If it leads to a good story, I can overlook it, but time will tell! As for solas, he did get a major upgrade since we last saw him in terms of both power and recruits.

Red lyrium future Solas is also too weak to do any of these things. As he got captured right at the start and didn’t have a chance to take Mythal’s powers and all the other stuff he undoubtedly did to increase his power after the main game and before and after Trespasser.

Like, they are so minor ... Also regarding Solas. Remember he absorbed Flemeth’s power and by the end of trespasser he was basically back to god level already. Nothing he does in this novel is anything trespasser Solas couldn’t of. This really is more than adequately explained.
