High Noon is an American 1952 western film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. The film tells in real time the story of a town marshal forced to face a gang of killers by himself. The screenplay was written by Carl Foreman, based on John W. Cunningham's pulp short story, "The Tin Star."
Woodward Maurice Ritter (January 12, 1905January 2, 1974), better known as Tex Ritter, was an American country music singer and movie actor popular from the mid-1930s into the 1960s, and the father of actor John Ritter. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Recorded by Tex Ritter for the Film Soundtrack:
Lyrics:
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
On this, our weddin' day
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Wait, wait along
I do not know what fate awaits me
I only know I must be brave
And I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave
Oh, to be torn 'twixt love and duty
S'posin' I lose my fair-haired beauty
Look at that big hand move along
Nearin' high noon
He made a vow while in state prison
Vowed it would be my life or his'n
I'm not afraid of death but oh
What will I do if you leave me?
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin', I can't believin'
Now that I need you by my side
Wait along, wait along
Wait along, wait along

When l was 6 yrs old Tex Ritter was came to Ft. Lenord Wood for Arm Forces Day, l loved his voice so much that he asked me to come up on stage and sing High Noon with him. I did so and l was so proud that he would invite me to sing High Noon with him. I never miss an opportunity to watch the movie or sing with him, l know he has gone to be with our Lord and Savior. The Lord is really building a choir in Heaven for us. I have surgery at noon today, l am not afraid to go under. If l don't come back l pray the Lord will heal my throat so l can sing in his choir in Heaven. Amen. Jacqulin Callin Botosanu. RIP Tex.

When I was six years old my mother, who is now 101 years, old took me and my brother to see High Noon. The Frankie Lane version of the song may be better, but it is the Tex Ritter version I will always remember. High Noon it truly one of the finest movies ever made, it has stood the test of time. Now at 70+ I still enjoy pulling it up and watching it. All the stars are now gone but what they created lives on.

For the movie...Tex Ritter was the right voice. Fit right in as if he was there with all the rest of the cast back in the time that the movie was about. Tex nailed it. His performance at the Academy Awards reinforced that. That said, Frankie Laine is awesome.

No, this isn't the movie soundtrack. It's the Capitol Records release by Tex Ritter. The movie soundtrack's first full verse first & third lines were "The noonday train will bring Frank Miller & And I must face that deadly killer". It was rewritten by Ned Washington just after the movie came out. I had the privilege of meeting composer Dimitri Tiomkin in the late 60's. He said this couplet was replaced with the "I do not know what fate awaits me" rhyme because everyone at Capitol thought the record would stand alone as a story better. Mr. Tiomkin said he gave carte blanche to lyric writer Washington to revise the copyright.

On this day in 1953 {March 19} the Academy Awards ceremony was televised for the first time, Bob Hope was the show's host... The winner for 'Best Original Song' was "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin')" from the motion picture 'High Noon'... Country singer Tex Ritter performed the song at the awards ceremony, and he also sang it during the opening credits of the film... The movie won three more Oscars; Gary Cooper for ‘Best Actor’, 'Best Editing', and 'Best Musical score'... R.I.P. Mr. Ritter {born Woodward Maurice Ritter; 1905 - 1974} and Mr. Cooper {born Frank James Cooper; 1901 - 1961}...

In screening the film to test audiences it fell flat. The audiences could not understand the story's background and the motivations which drove Gary Cooper's character. Thus, the film was reedited and the now iconic theme song composed and film and western music star Tex Ritter, with his deep, melodious voice, was hired to sing it. The redone film turned out to be a huge box office hit & got Gary Cooper his second Oscar.

I got a "3:03" capitol record version by Tex Ritter that comes from a CD of songs that won the Academy Awards (21 of them) and it sounds better than this one. A much greater dynamic range. The Beat in that version done more by the Guitar and it is also a bit slower and Tex Ritter's voice is much better (or maybe just sounds better because of the better recording tech). After looking into it, the 3:03 version seems to come from a stereo rerecording for a 1958 Capitol album and the shorter version was the mono single shellac released in 1952 to coincide with the movie.
