Tex Williams is a consummate country storyteller, and he carved up a sliver of life as well as it can be done! Smoking cigarettes has some downsides as we know, and "Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)" comically points a few of them out.

I worked at a place that did not allow us to smoke inside the building and an outside patio had been designated as the smoking area. Sometimes I would be standing out there in bitter cold weather and a fellow employee would ask me "How can you stay out here in the cold just to have a cigarette?" My response was, "If I didn't have the habit, I wouldn't smoke in good weather but since I DO have the habit, I will smoke regardless of the weather." BTW, I was smoking two packs a day but my husband and I both stopped smoking about 25 years ago and I have never had a cigarette since then.

At my aunt's house when I was a young kid in the early 60's, we used to sit around on a Sunday afternoon and play the 45 of this song over and over. This song along with Jimmy Dean's "Big John", Andy Griffin's "What It Was - Was Football", Farrin Young's "On the Wings of a Dove", and many other classics. Love that you bring these oldies back to life and help introduce them to a new younger audience - and stoke the embers of forgotten memories for an older generation. Thanks, Don!

Thank you for reacting to this!! I’ve been on vacation and just now saw this upload. I like the song because it’s catchy and the music is secondary to the singer, so it’s easy to learn and sing the song yourself, even without the music.

Had to pause in the middle of listening to a Mary Duff song when your channel flashed up. I remember when this song was popular in the fifties. Tex was one of my favorite male singers of that era. He came from the western swing era of the forties and fifties and had been a member of the Spade Cooley band.

I used to hear this a lot when I was a kid. It was released in 1947. Merle Travis , who wrote 16 Tons, co-wrote this.

This song was written when we still had 48 states! My mother smoked all of her short life. When I heard her coughing, that convinced me not to smoke. It was awful working in an office where almost everyone smoked and trying to eat out when a smoker was nearby. Open mouth, insert food and second-hand smoke - not fun. Hank Thompson does a song with a play on words, called "Smokey the Bar." I think he does this one, too.

Western swing. Try Asleep at the Wheel's live Rt.66 The whole band and singers take turns shining. Toe tapping music. The other of their hits is my favorite "big Balls in Cowtown"

Wow, I haven't heard this one in ages. I remember it from the late 50's and early 60's, I think it might have been a Hank Thompson version I remember the most. What a great pick, loved hearing it again!

Great review & song Don. Yeah, they put warnings on the side of the cigarette pack starting in the early 1960's (62?) A whole generation of us & then some didn't heed that warning. Without digging deep, I will say I have had respiratory problems the last 15 yrs. I had to retire back then. It is easy to quit cold turkey when your doctor reads & then shows you your lung xrays & says, " COPD. You need to quit or you will die sooner than you think."

I first heard this, I think, back in the early seventies and it was old then. Even though I'm a smoker I still find the song fun and amusing. Thank you Don for bringing back this golden oldie.

Google tells me it was written in 1947 by Merle Travis and Tex Williams. I remember hearing the song but not who sang it. Lots of people did including Willie Nelson.

Good Morning Don, a good fun song or as they say an oldie but s goodie. I believe this was the 1940's, It was written by Tex and Merle Travis.I am more familiar with the Travis version but both are very similar. Love the use of horns in western swing, and mentioning western swing I do not believe you have reacted to the Godfather f Western Swing Mr. Bob Wills. I would recommend either " San Antonio Rose " or " Sugar Moon ".

According to Tom Bresh (Merle's son) there were a few more verses to the song but they weren't acceptable for the time. It was also said that Tex and Merle wrote the song a day or two before Tex's recording session. Tex came to Merle for a song to fill out his session but Merle didn't have one. So he said they would try to write one, but first he needed a cigarette. When Tex told him he didn't have one, Merle went into the house to get one and came back with the idea for the song.

Hadn't heard this one in a long time. My how times and attitudes have changed. I live with severe respiratory issues, and was recently joking with a friend that if I ever decide to take myself out all I had to do was have one smoke. I referred to it as suicide by cigarette. 🤣😅

It's crazy to imagine a time where folks didn't think cigarettes were harmful to your health. Doctors would actually recommend smoking to reduce stress and calm anxiety.

I was watching a YT video where a psychiatrist was talking with a man who I believe was schizophrenic and the man was actually chain smoking during the interview. I was sort of intrigued by the fact that the doctor was allowing him to smoke in his office, but this was taped probably 50 years ago so I wasn't all that startled. THEN, as their conversation continued, the doctor also lit up and started smoking! Yep. That was definitely fifty years ago!
