I remember fondly seeing REM at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on the Green tour in like, 88 or something? To call me an REM fan in the 80's would be the definition of an understatement. People today couldn't know what this band meant to some of us back then - sorely missed

There's another live version where Mike mentions that R.E.M. never played Texarkana live when they were still together. (Not sure if that's literally never or just very rarely.) One of the band's best songs, but it's one Michael had very little to do with, which is probably why they didn't play it much.
@rftulie3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesburton8070 I guess that's why I never heard it in concert. Too bad about egos and so on. Mike Mills is a great musician and writes good songs. Two of them that I'm aware of come to a dead stop after the bridge, like a three quarter-note rest. Wonder why he likes doing that, but it does work. Link to that other live version, by any chance? I can't hear it enough.

Playing a Danelectro Longhorn, and with a plexiglass body no less. Very cool, and certainly explains the iconic bass tone for Texarcana. Wonder if this was the same bass he used to record it on Out of Time? Such a fantastic tune. Mike was definitely REM’s special ingredient.

Mike's a super nice guy - I hung out w him a few times - he came to see my band play in Athens w a couple of guys who also toured w REM - dude from the Posies and the guy who was in the movie Hype! who worked at Subpop - in '99 at some horrible burger restaurant - worst sounding room ever - when nobody else came cuz they were filming 'The Man Show' at the Georgia Theater a block away - they were giving away free beer and we were giving away lame songs (that I had no hand in writing cuz I was the drummer) - if I'd lived in Athens I'd also have gone with the free beer and girls bouncing on trampolines. Unsurprisingly, these days I'm not a famous rockstar - partied like one for too long though! With Mike a couple of times! Great guy - great band. Miss 'em

Which band was you drumming for? Ken Stringfelliw from Posies and Scott McCaughey from Ypung Frsh Fellows who were on Subpop
@morgancatherwood56652 жыл бұрын
that's right - those were the guys - Scott and Ken. We played pool the rest of the time when weren't onstage. I was a hired drummer for a band called Lotustar. We were all right, I guess. Literally a dozen people were there - 3 of em from REM. Saw Peter Buck that evening too. Mike was going out with a girl I used to be friendly with from Rollins College where we went so we'd hang out when she was in town. Mike even took me to a Braves game one time - he's a sweetheart of a guy

@@izvodar Stipe "retired". Touring is a lot of work, and it takes it's toll on you. If you're not 'into it' anymore, it's best to just not go on the road. How many acts have you seen that are obviously just there for the mortgage payment? Michael's got enough class to refuse to disrespect his fans with "phoned in" performances. I have to respect him for that.
