I think it's an artist's folly. They were characterized by making more serious, introspective, deep songs, but then they certainly think that a more "feel good" song de-characterizes their work. Peter Buck is the most underrated guitar player! He can play any string instrument and he’s a hell of a nice guy! Met him in the 90’s on Kauai. It was dumping rain one night and I stopped off to the bar for a drink after work. I was the only one there except for a guy sitting on the corner barstool. It was Peter Buck. We got to talking and after a while he asked me if I knew who he was, I said yes, your Peter Buck from REM. We had some drinks and just talked for an hour or so. He asked if I could give him a ride home. I said sure, but all I have is my motorcycle and it’s pouring rain. He said he didn’t care. His house was about 7-8 miles down the hwy at Anini beach. We were soaked when we got to his house on the beach. I was just gonna drop him off and go home. He invited me in for more drinks, so of course I went. His wife Stephanie met us at the door, gave us each a dry robe and took our wet clothes and put em in the dryer. We sat and had Jack and Cokes until probably 3-4am just talking about music and life. He put on their new CD before it was even released to the public and asked what I thought. It was super cool. Before I left we exchanged phone numbers and he promised to call next time they were on Kauai. I still have his number in my little black organizer in storage. The following night they came into the restaurant I cooked at for dinner with friends. The wait staff were blown away when Peter Buck asked for me by name. I went out and said hello. Sent them some appetizers on me. I moved back to the mainland a few months later so I never got to hang out with him again. But that night will live in my memory forever! The night I got to spend with a great musician and friend Peter Buck!

So w my eyes shut, I listened. My insight is that this was written and produced in the early 90s. That's when anti depressants had just become the new rage.
