I do love the cheer dads though. We are friends with one dad who is a single parent and proud supportive super encouraging cheer dad because his kids mom doesn’t get involved. The other cheer dad got into it b/c his wife was literally banned from competitions and games for getting aggressive, starting fights and getting involved in this kids teen drama on facebook. He pretty much redeemed the family. He’s there, supportive but not loud or obnoxious and helps the girls with yoga to rehab injuries and strength training.

My aunt was a dance mom and majorette mom. Eventually the girls dropped dance and joined the HS school band as majorettes so my aunt became a majorette mom AND a band mom THEN both girls (5 years apart) made the majorette team for the Penn State marching band so it didnt end for years!! Both girls are grown women with kids now and my aunt still hangs out with the other twirling/band moms and goes to games and competitions as if their kids are still there. Crazy.

I was born and raised in Houston. As a high school cheerleader we had tryouts in front of the former cheerleaders who were graduating, and 2 officials from the NCA (I may be wrong on the organization as it was many moons ago). All of this was in the late 90's and early 00's. Lastly, my school specifically forbade the popularity vote for any athletics because it was biased and unfair.

I grew up and still live in Houston. I was in high school when this all went down and it seemed crazy to us too. Cheerleading was what you did if you were popular and something you could put in your college applications.The football team was mediocre at best. We were known for the baseball team. And the cheerleaders tryouts were held in front of the entire school and were voted on like candidates.

while ive never met a cheer mom, i still distinctly remember the dance moms for the few years i did dance. theres also the midwestern phenomenon of SHOW CHOIR MOMS, and theyre beasts of their own. show choir’s a combo of dance and choral music, and youd be surprised how many moms start planning for their kids joining high school show choir in MIDDLE SCHOOL. i actually remember one show choir kid whose mom was helping them with a future pop music career

In middle school it is totally a tryout in front of the school. In high school, at least in San Antonio, it is a closed tryout with judges from other schools so it’s a complete blind pick. And that was in the early 90s when I sponsored our dance/cheer team. But at my school, at least, no one did tumbling or took dance classes. Girls of all sizes and shaped and ability joined pep and then tried out for dance and cheer. We had a lot of fun and it was not as competitive. Now it’s all psycho. And cheer is still huge in Texas. At least UIL (athletic governing body) is starting to recognize it as a sport, not just a bunch of kids jumping around waving pompoms. 😂🎉 love you and what you do!!!! ❤❤

I lived in TX for Jr. and HS, unfortunately this was exactly how cheerleaders were chosen. We got to watch all the tryouts, missing class and being with your friends really was the highlight, and then we all voted who should be cheerleaders. It was simply a glorified popularity contest… I graduated in 1988, so yes, I am older… my hope is this way is lonnnnng gone as there are many, many athletic, talented cheerleaders out there and it never should have been about popularity among peers and campaigns.

Ok so I absolutely love you, first of all. Also, I'm from Texas and was a cheerleader and was VERY familiar with this story. I love the lifetime movie made about this story. It's top-notch. 🤣 And since you asked...When I was a freshman and sophomore in high school ('98 & '99 tryouts) in my small Texas town of 3k peeps, we did have to try out in front of the whole school and they'd vote. And that was that. Come 2000 and 2001 tryouts, school decided that we should actually **gasp** be evaluated by real cheer coaches and trainers 😲 and that's when I actually became one. The end

In high school, I cheered in the national cheer competition that airs on ESPN. My other cheerleading fun fact is that I cheered in the high school basketball game where Kobe Bryant scored his 1000th point. And after half time, all the players and cheerleaders were coming out of the locker rooms at the same time, and I was walking right next to him. I felt pretty cool. He wasn't aware I existed. (I'll answer the FAQs before anyone asks: We went to rival high schools. He was two years ahead of me.)

So.... Born and raised in Texas. Grew up in a football/baseball-revolved town of less than 3k. I graduated HS in 2002. In junior high and my freshman year ('98-'99), cheerleaders were chosen partially by judges (usually former cheerleaders, teachers or cheer sponsors) ALONG WITH the student body. We had to try out in front of the ENTIRE school. Totally embarrassing. My sophomore year ('99-'00), they finally changed it to be judge-only tryouts and the judges were legit gymnastics coaches from around the area and former cheerleaders from the high school. So much better with better quality cheerleaders. To my knowledge, they have never gone back to the student body votes. It makes no sense. Cheerleading is also a sport in my eyes...

I lived in a town close to Channelview when this happened and yes, it was ALL OVER the news!!! In fact, my brother had a friend that had gotten injured and ended up in the hospital while Wanda was out on bail awaiting trial. So he went to visit his friend and Wanda was there! His friend was related to her somehow and she had come to visit him too. My brother tried to pretend like she wasn't even there, but at some point in the visit, she wanted to know if he recognized her or had seen anything on the news about her. He had of course, but just played like he hadn't. He said she kind of acted like she was disappointed! 😳 Crazy!!! 🤪

Texas is absolutely no joke seriously into football, cheer, twirlers, it's a huge deal. A friend of mine was a twirler/drill team girl in Texas in the early 70's, she said they were a big deal back then. I'll ask her if she remembers this case, I'm sure she does, I mean dayemmmmm. Another "my butt on the edge of my seat" story, thank you Sara! You make all of us aware of the crazy that can happen.

I grew up in Garland, TX right out of Dallas and yes the student vote was something that they did but at my school it was only part of your score, they would also have judges because kids don't know what they are judging (it's a popularity contest) the judges would judge on technique, knowledge, school spirit, confidence, and how loud they are. I'm pretty sure you had to be passing all your classes too. This was middle school and high school tryouts

The Texas cheer voting thing is normal! I moved from Michigan to the panhandle and wanted to continue cheer but I was told that you had to try out in front of the entire school. It wasn’t even just the freshman class - the entire study body was summoned to watch. There was a ballot given out that we turned in. It was really more of a popularity contest than anything. I loved cheer at the time but there was no way in hell I was going to do that.

For years, there is this episode of The Nanny where Fran and Grace entered a Mother-Daughter beauty pageant and compete against a rival mother and daughter. The rival-mother tried to kick Fran and Grace out which Fran said to the rival-daughter, "Never go out for cheerleading!" For the longest time, I never understood that reference until now thanks to this story.
