Texas ends death row special last meals

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is ending the death row last meal after a controversial feast this week in Huntsville.

Lawrence Russell Brewer ordered two chicken fried steaks smothered in gravy with sliced onions, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, a cheese omelet with other ingredients, a large bowl of fried okra with ketchup, three fajitas, a pint of Blue Bell ice cream and a pound of barbecue with a half-loaf of white bread. The meal request also included a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts, a pizza and three root beers. Brewer declined to eat the last meal

Officials overreacted. This is what they should have done. "Thank you, but no thank you. I'm not hungry now." "Are you sure, Brewer?" "Yes, sir, warden." Warden brings in the executioner and while tucking the napkin under his chin, asks, "Anyone else want to chow down with us in this delicious meal compliments of Mr. Brewer?" A few guys raise their hands. There should be a feast with Brewer, the warden, the executioner, and anyone else willing, with Brewer sitting at the table with them while they eat his last meal.

Well in when the state of Western Australia had the death penalty the killer could choose his last meal as long it cost no more than $10. On the morning of the execution, he was given a shot of spirit of his choice before being lead to the gallows

In the uk I don’t think we gave a last meal but a glas of brandy was given just before the executioner walked them to the gallows next to their cell

Unfortunately, there are innocent people who are wrongfully convicted and sentenced to execution. Look at Ron Keine for example. I sometimes think that happens because either the defense isn't doing what they're supposed to do, or the prosecution screwed it up with false evidence. If an innocent man/woman is still going to be executed for a murder they didn't commit, I think that the innocent man/woman should get to die with dignity and get a last meal.

I am normally a massive opponent of the death penalty. But when you look in cases like Lawrence Russell Brewer's, even I've questioned my own beliefs. I mean - dragging someone to death in the manner he killed his victim is just pure evil.

I wonder if he understands that this last meal is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Almost every single country, and state that has an excution has the last meal option. They should have done it like Florida, and put a $40 limit on what they could order. It is a way of us seperating ourselves fromt he criminal. I know it's taken 9 years for a answer but better late than never. it's kindness. your showing a kindness the killer didn't show. the last meal is a choice they get. something they hadn't had in possibly 20 years. it also serves to calm them. it's easier to take a calm prisoner to death than a rowdy one.

$75 is nothing, they are saving money the second he got executed. Cost per inmate a year is 98k so who cares. Sure slap in the face but shouldn't effect other inmates. Just limit last meal to $100 limit and who cares what is done with it. Does it matter if the food is in a doggy bag or a body bag in the long run?

The prison was also foolish if they actually cooked all of this. If granted a last meal, the prison should allow them one entree, two sides, one drink and one dessert. Personally, I don't think they deserve that.

The punishment isn't death the punishment is sitting there for 20 years in isolation knowing knowing that they're gonna kill you. My opinion is just the waste of taxpayers money if somebody gets the death penalty it needs to be immediate as soon a the judge's gavel hits the desk it should be immediately they should be immediately transported to the death chamber no setting there and us taxpayers paying to keep a person that's gonna die we should not keep them alive for 20 years.

John, if you actually knew anything about the last meal, then you would know that just because a prisoner orders something, doesn't mean he will get it. All last meals are prepared from what is in stock at the prison kitchen or commissary. He can make a list three pages long if he wants to, but he just ain't gonna get it. Jeff Hagerman Hi Jeff. I saw a video on KZbin somewhere about this and I seem to recall it is for 2 reasons. 1) Should the execution be cancelled or stayed whilst the needles are inserted, sterilising them ensures infection chances are kept to a minimum and 2) It’s just the done thing. At least that’s what the video I saw said. I just typed in basically your question in to KZbin and got a video explaining why. Sorry I can’t remember what it was called.
